They would have to go back and try to cut out the SE stuff etc and it would be a nightmare. Not imposible but nowhere near as straight forward as people think. But I'm no expert so someone else could chime in on the subject?
What about a scan of the dupe (did they use a dupe?) they used for the 2006 unrestored dvd's? Surely they can get something pretty good out of those.

Yeah, thats the one they used for the LD too wasnt it. I wonder if they could make a 4k of that.

Don't forget that there is a hardcover book in that set as well, sans dust jacket.

From what I've read about and seen on the bonus disc, the first Godfather film on Blu is comprised almost entirely of dupes. Looks fantastic to me I'd expect similar results from SW dupes if they were given a bit of TLC.

Yup... Sight & Sound in Waltham, MA (RIP) used to offer 20% retail if you preordered.

I'm pretty sure $250 was the retail on that.

Nice to know there are still some Laserdisc people still out there. Yeah those classic prices the 79.99 felt like a steal.

The cool thing about the "definitive" LD box, to me, is that you can remove the book, take out that little cardboard divider piece they have in there, and then there is exactly enough room to also include the CLV "faces" discs in the set. I put together my own uber-UOT LD set that way about 15 years ago.

I sincerely miss that store. I think they could be doing great business with BD right now. They would carry all the titles that regular stores don't carry and I could drive there and buy anything. Instead of waiting and ordering online. Ahhh those were the days, the laserdisc days that is.

I don't understand why you would buy the LD set considering the non-anamorphic DVD editions are much cheaper and of better quality and...not on an LD. Is the audio better or something?

LOL.

Here we again tread into "opinion" territory, and I heartily disagree.

My own nostalgia goggles were making me think the PT was better than I remembered it, but man... the dialogue between Harrison Ford/Carrie Fisher, even at it's worst, doesn't get anywhere near as bad as the stuff between Hayden and Natalie. Now that it's fresh in my mind again it's easy for me to make the distinction.

I've been looking around and I know this original print exists http://www.abc2news.com/dpp/news/reg...enator-theater i'm curious to know why Lucas does not use it for an unaltered OT blu ray release. now i'm not sure about the other 2 movies but since this one exist i'm sure the other 2 do.

Cost. Seriously this is what it boils down to folks. Lucas does not want to invest the money that it would take to do a proper restoration of the UOT and put it on blu ray. He doesn't have the confidence that it would sell well enough to make back what he would have to invest in doing it.

There is nothing in the OT as awful as this:

Anakin Skywalker: You are so... beautiful.
Padmé: It's only because I'm so in love.
Anakin Skywalker: No, it's because I'm so in love with you.
Padmé: So love has blinded you?
Anakin Skywalker: [laughs] Well, that's not exactly what I meant.
Padmé: But it's probably true.

Simply put - Because George Lucas doesn't want to.

He has a vision of what Star Wars should be - and the movie from 1977 doesn't meet that vision.

If he does it I'll promise to buy Howard the Duck no matter what he charges for it

More of a nostalgic thing for me. I always thought the box set looked cool.

The audio is uncompressed digital Dolby Surround on all the UOT LDs from 1989 onwards. The 2006 UOT LDs are Dolby 2.0 @ 192kbps. Also, the 2006 UOT DVDs were single-layer only, so the video bitrate was constrained from that standpoint as well. To call them half-assed would be a severe understatement.
