Finally watched TPM on my set up and I have to agree with a lot of previous posts, it is more of a DNR'd mess that I originally thought. First time I saw it was on a friend's 42 inch plasma and I didn't think it was so bad. Soft in spots sure, but not terrible. Tonight I watched it with my projector. Ugh. Def 2.5 star PQ. Sound was nice though and the digital Yoda looked kinda out of place. Like he was the sharpest thing in the film. Was strange, but sorta funny in a way.

Anyway, its a fun movie. I did wonder why didn't Obi Wan and Qui Gonn contact the Jedi Order while they were stranded on Tatoonie? Would have gotten past that whole bargining with that floating blue bastard for a engine to the space ship. Also, would have spared us the lines "That is so wizard!" and "Yippie!" LOL, fun movie though.

I'm about an hour into it (having not seen it for a couple of years). Lots of missed opportunities, but I agree... it is fun. Frustrating, ultimately, but not the worst, IMO.

The transfer is also frustrating. Very inconsistent.

There's a good dozen different times in the prequels where you can play this "I wonder why..." game and move the plot along.

Like... "I wonder why" no one bothered to go back and free Shmi from frickin SLAVERY. She fed and housed the Queen of Naboo in a time of crisis. No time or $$$ to free her, but we can have a huge party and import the entire Jedi council.

Empire Strikes Back question for you fellows.

Just finished it today (just as amazing as ever) but one part sort of struck me as odd. After Luke is rescued from Cloud City and moaning 'Ben, Why didn't you tell me?' while he lays down...he then goes to the cockpit where he says the same thing again immediately afterwards.

Has it always been like that? It just seemed like they shot the scene in two different locations and then accidentally spliced both versions of it into the film. But my OT knowledge is poor, so can someone shed some light on this for me?

At the end of one of the later Tatooine scenes when Sio requests they contact him, Obi-Wan instructs the Queen to not send any transmissions in fear of a trace. I'd guess that would apply to any transmission in fear of a trace?

Oh wow!

Those are very good points. They(including Anakin) just completely forgot about her.

Yes, but from what I remember the 2nd time was spoken slower and more emotional.

That's nothing - why did the people of Naboo allow Shmi to live in slavery after Anakin saved them? Why did the Jedi allow Shmi to continue in slavery?

Because Lucas realized the whole "Jesus/Anakin" analogy was probably one of the worst decisions made in that film, especially because that really means she gave birth to the Anti-Christ, in a way.

So they got rid of her in the easiest way possible, by largely ignoring her until they bring her back just long enough to kill her and be done with it. Supposedly justifying Anakin turning into even more of a spoiled brat.

They didn't go back for her because they, the Jedi Council, was trying to raise Anakin as a normal jedi without attachments. It really makes sense in the story too, because it shows how Anakin is moving away from the Order due to their difference in ideals. When Anakin has to watch her die he realizes that he could, and should have gone back for her. He also blames Obi-wan again, who is the by the book Jedi, showing how Anakin disagrees with him and the Jedi.

It also plays a huge role in RotS, the idea of loss is what drives Anakin to the dark side. The death of Shmi was a huge point in Anakin's life it wasn't just some throw away moment to get rid of her from the series.

LOL. So true.

Honestly, one of the worst parts about the PT and overall Saga is how much Anakin is put on a pedestal from the get-go. The emaculate conception, this "chosen one" prophecy nonsense (which is never really fully explained... there's just some prophecy about some chosen one who will destroy the Sith... who prophesied this? How did they determine this?).

It would have been better if he was just an ordinary (but particularly well skilled and well respected) Jedi who fell to the dark side. But they managed to mangle that up pretty badly.

I've always looked at it as Luke is trying to figure out why Ben didn't tell him the truth that Vader was actually his Father. He keeps trying to ask Ben why and Ben won't answer.

I guess it's just the fact that the line is totally identical in both scenes. Maybe if they dropped the "Ben..." from the second one, it wouldn't stick out to me as peculiar.

Oh well - I still kept shaking my head at how incredible this movie manages to be after all these years. Brilliance.

So, the point was that Jedis are heartless douchebags? I don't think that was really what they were going for there.

Also, within the odd little rulebook Lucas created for the Order, that might make sense. That the guardians of peace and justice would allow a slave that assisted in a time of need to remain in bondage. But that doesn't explain why the government of Naboo feels the same way...

One thing that bothers me all of a sudden about the PT is the younglings. What parent, in a galaxy far, far way or any other for that matter, would willingly give their child away to a peacekeeping force? I don't care if it's the greatest honor in the universe, I don't think there would be too many parents that this would sit well with. I could see if there was a Jedi Academy for when people became a certain age and they went and trained to become a Jedi. I guess it takes a lifetime of training to be a Jedi and Luke accomplished this in just a few years. The Force must have been strong in him, indeed.

As far as we know, only one...Shmi. Because it's the only way to free Anakin from slavery. The only reason she doesn't go with him is because she was not part of the bargain.

As for all the other younglings, how do we know they don't go home to mom and dad down the street from the Jedi temple after a day of training? It's never suggested at all that their parents gave them away to the Jedi.

Isn't it kinda implied with the whole no attachments creed of the Jedi?

Isn't it implied that it's not since Qui-Gon tried to bargain for the release of Shmi at the same time as Anakin?

Perhaps the lack of attachments is training that begins in later years?

Hell, in Lucas' world anything is possible.
