It doesn't state so overtly but it's implied:

The availability of 3D tech has been one of the reasons Lucas has been holding out. The Reporter mentions the availability of properly equipped theaters as well as televisions have affected the timetable
That leads me to believe we'll have a regular 2D Blu-ray version and later down the line a 3D version.

Not this time for me, not in 3D. I was there for every other releases back in theaters for Star Wars in the past but this time George will not be getting my $10. I will buy the Blu-ray release next year and that will be it, no 3D for me.

So let me see if I follow this...

Releasing a thirty year old movie in 3D is no big deal.

Releasing that same movie in its original form is too difficult and expensive.

Okay. Got it.

I am not going to pass up watching these in 3D in the theater, although I am not a fan of the tech I think it will benefit from the conversion, since movies look softer and less immersive on the big screen than on BD at home.

I predict it's going to be a big hit, and really spectacular, perhaps with some updated VFX!?

However, for BD I am going to be just fine with 2D, as it's going to look awesome that way!

Cool news!

Honestly, if a movie is NOT shot in Native 3D or if it was not meant to be seen in 3D...then I won't watch it. This is just another attempt by George Lucas to cash in the 3D gimmick. I am not excited at all by his attempt to convert it into 3D. JMO!

However I am very excited the saga will be release on blu ray. I am perfectly satisfied with the 2D blu ray release, the way it was film and meant to be watch. Day one buy for me.

They say they are taking the time to get it right. Clash of the Titans was extremely rushed, and this won't be, as you can easily tell by the painfully long release schedule.

Check out the video below, where John Knoll states this himself.

Oh, I cannot wait to see SW on BD and in the theaters in 3D again!

Heavenly bliss!! The force is strong with us!

They have to hope that the whole 3D craze hasn't completely died (again) by 2012.

Whats it going to take for people to realize that it ain't gonna happen. 3D is here to stay. It has fans who love it and consider anything without it behind the times. Not to mention technology has caught up with it.

Its pretty much inevidible that the Star Wars movies will be released in Blu-Ray 3D eventually but that is likely be a few years after its 2011 2D release since only one of the movies has been confirmed for 2012 and its likely all six movies won't have finished conversions for some time after. Lucas will milk the 3D versions in the theatre all he can before he allows the movies to hit home video. Likely seeing all six movies in 2D high def will be as good as it gets for now for most fans for many years.

From my understanding, it died about 3 times already. It may died but another 3D craze will probably appear again in 2020 or something. That is if this 3D era will catch on to the majority of the market.

Some in the film industry say it already has happened, so I guess it's a matter of opinion.

Garbage in 3D is still garbage. I can't think of a single 3D movie other than Avatar that has received any real critical acclaim at all (except maybe for UP, and most were perfectly satisfied seeing it in 2D).

And the public is quickly catching on to the difference between proper 3D and the horrible looking 3D conversions that studios throw together in hopes of cashing in on the gimmick. Again, Avatar is one of the few that was done right.

I'm guessing the 3D fad will last longer this time than when it came back (supposedly to stay) in the early '80s, but I think ultimately it will suffer the same fate. I could be wrong.

If Avatar was never film in 3D or attain the success it did, then we wouldn't be having any of these 3D post at all. Simply put it, everyone wants the piece of the pie and want to replicate the success that Avatar was.

I can name others that have been critically acclaimed

Legend of the Guardians
How to Train Your Dragon
Bolt
and the masterpeice Toy Story 3

Granted they are all animated movies but all three are enjoyable even without the 3D. 3D like everything other enhancement is worthless if the movie using it is crap or if its poorly implemented. However when implemented properly in a movie that is still good without it 3D has proven itself a great visual enhancement that allows movies to take full advantage of the full human feild of vision.

3D died in previous attempts because of the poor technology used to implement it. Previous 3D have either been anaglyphs which produce horible color reproduction or horizontal polarized dual film strip projecters which gave audiences little head freedom and were highly error prone. They also were incredibly difficult to shoot with dual film cameras.

Modern 3D theaters use circularly polarized digital projecters that give the audience far better head freedom and are far less error prone. Not to mention modern 3D fusion cameras and digital conversions make it easier to create a 3D movie then ever before. To say 3D will fail now because it did in the past is ignorant of the vast differences of old 3D and modern technology.

Read slowly if it helps...

Lucas doesn't consider those versions to be worth the time and money to re-release.

They don't represent the films as he evisioned them. They are inferior to his final versions.

Neither can I. Glad they are starting with the superior Prequel films.

Or they could release both and let the fans decide which is better. Ya... I know, that's crazy talk.
