I love Criterion cause they give me movies that would have very little chance to be release by normal studios

Star Wars will never be as part of the Criterion collection. Lucasfilms and Fox will never allow it.

No, there isn't. Aliens is just a well made action/horror movie. Nothing more, nothing less. There isn't much depth to Alien either. And there doesn't need to be, because it's not that kind of movie.

Ok, I really hate to come off as blasphemous. But...
The real problem with the Star Wars films is... Star Wars. That is, "A New Hope." That is the one piece that doesn't really fit into the puzzle. And why? As I (and others) have stated before, that was the film that was written to be its own entity. In Star Wars, Vader is NOT Luke's father. Leia is NOT Luke's sister. Anakin and Vader ARE separate people. The Emperor is NOT a sith. And so on. Empire and Jedi exist sort of like an alternate reality of Star Wars. Same characters, different past. Lucas came up with a variation of his story that he liked better and felt added a more tragic / epic tone, so he rewrote the Star Wars history to accommodate his new vision. And the PT supports the Empire/Jedi timeline. There are simply fewer inconsistencies (from major stuff listed above, to even minor things -- like why would Kenobi, who is supposedly in hiding, continue to wear the "uniform" of the Jedi?) if ANH is removed from the picture. That's the entire problem with the Star Wars films. Lucas is telling two completely different stories, but with the same characters, and trying to make them fit together. As a stand alone 3 picture set, the OT mostly works. There are inconsistencies, but not unforgivable ones. It's when the PT are added into the equation that the glaring differences between ANH and the other 5 films becomes much more apparent. |

Dude, you do know George Lucas owns the rights to Star Wars right? Fox is just the choosen distributor at this time and have zero rights to Star Wars other than the fees they make from helping in distribution.

I believe that Fox doesn't own any further new (at the time) Star Wars titles after Murdoch acquired Fox but what they owned prior, they still own it.

No. They sold those back to Lucas in trade to have theatrical distribution rights on the 1997 re-releases and the PT. Each film, from ANH to ROTS is owned by Lucas. Therefore, the majority of the money made on the blu rays goes to Lucasfilm, Fox makes a small fee in comparison.

The problem we have now is that Georgie boy has completely f*(ked himself for future releases. The reason I caved and bought the set is because I'm afraid there won't be another next-gen hi-def release.
The prequels can only ever be 1080p. That's it. No upgrades. Ever. In his maniacal and ill-advised need to push the envelop he rushed into a format that was only 10 years future-proof. Given his insane stubborn streak when it comes to his forcing his "complete" saga on us, I can't imagine him ever releasing the OT in better resolution than the PT. I think this is the reason he never went back to 4 or 8k scans of the ON. Also, he would have to redo all the special edition crap. At this point he has all the money he and his heirs will ever need. ILM is self-sustaining and profitable. All the EU stuff will continue to generate ridiculous wealth. And he is insanely stubborn. I don't think he will care about the revenue he could get from another release of the OT. 4K-Ray or whatever the digital-delivery version is won't have a SW release. This is my prediction. |

Yeah, its why you see the Clone Wars cartoon being released by Warner Bros. George can release Star Wars material with any company that he desires. Rightfully so of course, as they are his films and he was the original artist (notice I didn't call him The Creator as he isn't a religious diety). He was just wise enough to work out a good deal. He is a great businessman.

http://www.supershadow.com/starwars/history.html But it is evident that Fox is only making a small amount of the money from distribution. |
