Star Wars: The Complete Saga (1977-2005)

I will never understand why some people spend sooooooo much time in a thread about movies they hate, created by a filmmaker they despise. It doesn't even matter if they loved the UOT. I can definitely understand why some people love or hate these films. What I don't understand is the state of mind of certain people in this thread.

Just the very idea that people would completely immerse themselves with something that is obviously very negative to them.... completely baffles me. Some of them go as far as using the objects of their disdain as their avatars. I don't get that either. Normal people usually use something positive on their avatar. But for people to put something they despise on their avatar, just to show everyone how much hate they have simmering in them.... jesus christ. Does their hatred of George Lucas completely overshadow any love they may have for any other films? I hope I never get to a point in my life where I understand that kind of behavior.

I'll readily accept at face value that there was no intent to offend certain groups with different species' portayals (i.e. Gungans = Caribbean blacks, Watto = Jewish peddler, etc.) but George Lucas, or someone whose advice he would listen to (if such a person exists anymore) should have known better. Because it's something that a reasonable person could interpret (even without the use of Sir Topham Hatt and/or Laser Tag), it's a self-inflicted wound and I won't feel sorry for Lucas on that point.

Before you bring up the fact that in the OT all the Imperial fleet officers were depicted as vaguely British (example: Grand Moff Tarkin as played by Peter Cushing) while the Rebels were vaguely American, it's rather different. England has historically (between say the 1600s and 1945) been the world's greatest naval power, so it would make sense to make a space navy's officers British. It also ties in with the American Revolution and colonialism and all, sure, but it's not the kind of thing that could reasonably be seen as offensive to a modern viewer.

Just because Lucas came up with the "universe" of Star Wars doesn't mean that it's above and beyond criticism when something just doesn't work for some people.

It's the go-to arguemetn for people who really otherwise don't have one... "Lucas says it's the way it's supposed to be, therefore he is right and anyone who disagrees is just wrong!"

I hate to break it to yo but the influences to Star Wars are f.e. The Wizard Of Oz, Flash Gordon, the jidai-geki of Kurosawa, John Ford films (or didn't you even get the "Searchers" reference!?), David Lean movies, Silent movies, world history and myth, 50s SciFi like "Forbidden Planet", ...

It was never "Starship Troopers", "Platoon" or "Medal Of Honor".

I never said that it should be like those latter movies. That's just an assumption that you pulled out of your rear end.

I know that he was going for something more along the lines of the old 50s serials, etc. And a little humor and even a little "cheesiness" here and there isn't necessarily a bad thing. But there should still be a seriousness to what is going on as well. I should still have a vested interest in what is happening to the characters that I am watching and not feel like I'm watching some awful parody movie which accomplishes nothing other than badly ripping off other movies. That's what Jar Jar comes across as to me. The OT handled these sorts of things better.

Agreed! I think or Lucas very often strikes me as rather innocent in certain things and in the way he talk's. I don't think he always see things like a lot of other people will see them.

As for someone telling him about it, I don't think there is such a thing now at Lucasfilm and Skywalker Ranch. I suspect the place must look more like a religious compound at times with dear old uncle George as the fearless leader and no one daring to say NO! NOOOOOO! to him

I saw it that way on my very first viewing. I thought Jar Jar was of the southern "yes massa" reconstruction era stereotype, and the Trade Federation guys were of the 1940's "Funny 'Japs'" stereotypes. I remember my brother and I discussing how F'd up that was after we drove home that morning. Phantom Menace was the only midnight showing I have ever been too--it broke me of the desire to do so ever again.

I never saw Watoo as a stereotype though. He was one of the very few prequel characters I actually liked.

There are so many franchises out there: "Pirates Of The Carribean", "Underworld", "Twilight" - really "badass" and dark and vicious. You might like that. But you said you knew better what fits into the Star Wars universe than Lucas! I just dare to doubt that assumption!

Look, as long as Georgie's kids like the prequels, I'm happy. Those movies were paid for and in the black before he even shot a frame, so if he decided to make expensive birthday videos for his children more power to him. He shouldn't feel responsible for demolishing the nostalgic temple built by millions of people who grew up with the SW OT. But if he ever truly cared about the universe he "created" then MY GOD MAN ARE YOU INSANE?!!! LOOK WHAT YOU DID!!!!!
