If I recall correctly the actors signed for up to three films (depending on their characters) before reading the script for TPM. I might be wrong, though.

In this clip Ewan expresses his thoughts on the PT briefly, after about the 1-minute mark. Haha, sorry, probably seems I'm obsessed with the guy. I just remember that in some interviews he speaks a bit more candidly about SW than other principals.

I saw that on TV a couple of months ago. You can see McGregor roll his eyes when Clarkson says he liked all of them

I remember that actually. refreshing to see an actor be honest about work he's done that he doesn't like, although I don't think it's much of a secret that he's never exactly held the PT - or the film making process therein - in high regard.

WOW!

This thread has really gone downhill big time!

For some time, people were actually talking about the BDs, but now it's full of hatred and bashing with the most ridiculous arguments man could come up with!

Some of you should truly be ashamed of yourselves!

I can't believe what I am hearing!

People, you are breaking my heart!

Seriously, this is just sad!

Where are the mods here?

I actually prefer the prequels over the OT, because the story is much richer and more focused, and the VFX are worlds better. The amount of art that has gone into the making of the PT is unparalleled!

Jar Jar is funny, and many people like him!

Give it a rest already!

There are many people who love, and/or prefer the PT!

Your opinion isn't everything!

Doof, MCT and others have clearly joined the Sith.

Creating hate and mistrust are their ways now.

Sad. Very sad!

Guiness didn't like the writing on STAR WARS (4:00) - so what!? He's just the actor... Must come with the Obi-Wan-role...

And to be fair, no one went to see Star Wars ANH because Guiness was in it. However, I do feel his presense elevated the film to a certain level of dignity more so than any other performance on screen in that film.

I love Alec Guiness. All I'm saying is that the old movies were panned as bad as the new ones and that some actors weren't entirely happy on both trilogies and with both trilogies there was an older generation of moviegoers that couldn't understand why their kids liked em so much...

None of the pieces of Star Wars were inarguably indispensible but some were arguably indispensible.

Without John Williams Star Wars could have easily been a one and done. Losing Harrison Ford or Alec Guiness would have been a huge, probably lethal blow. James Earl Jones, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were in the middle, keeping them would be safe but they were all likely replacable. I go back and forth on Peter Cushing but overall I think he was in that middle group - keeping him is better but not absolutely necessary. Except when I think he was absolutely necessary.

Oh, right, Porkins. Porkins was absolutely indispensible.

In all honesty, that was not my experience in the 70s. I was in high school at the time and not only did we all love Star Wars but the staff and the faculty loved it (and this was at a Catholic High School run by Augustinian monks so figure that out), our parents were even into it (dads more than moms but still).

It's appeal was both deep and wide.

And for the record, Star Wars was nominated for 11 Academy Awards including Best Actor, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Score and Best Picture.

That's not being 'panned'. That's a pretty positive reception.

I'm just saying.

He didn't like the dialogue (in a SW flick - nowt new there) but the story held him "page by page."

Liam Neeson loved TPM. Harrison Ford couldn't care less about Star Wars - so what? Are you asking John Travolta if you're supposed to love Pulp Fiction?

That's not what I'm saying - you said Guiness didn't like the writing in SW, which covers a broad spectrum (dialogue, story, plot, character), when in fact he criticised the dialogue, but not the story or any other component. Travolta and PF - please, don't be so borderline hysterical.

It's just awesome to see the main stars of all 6 films together with Lucas in one big photo shoot.

And Jar Jar Stinks smack in the middle of it... oh, the humanity.

And I don't suppose that's David Prowse in the Vader suit, considering Lucas doesn't like (hates?) the guy?

I don't think anyone went to see Star Wars initially because of anyone IN the movie. However, Alec might have been the biggest star.
