I actually noticed some matte boxes in ROTJ. They appear to be fixed when a ship is against black space, but when a ship is behind another ship then the matte boxes are still obvious. Watch the end battle in ROTJ and you'll see what I mean.

It's irritating. These are things that definitely should've been taken care of before adding nonsensical rocks for R2 to hide behind and humongadoor for Jabba's palace. |

It's getting to the point where you are just using the whole myth and fantasy aspect as an excuse for any glarring error in the films. So because it's "fantasy", we should just throw out any expectations of consistency within the rules and terms of this universe out the window and expect things to just not add up when they should? The bottom line is that it's very clear that a parsec was intended as a unit of time in that scene, and then was later redefined to be a unit of distance, and any attempts on Lucas and co. to try to explain/excuse it are pathetic at best. The truth be told, the error, itself doesn't really bother me. It's generally not something that I focus on. If it was used as a unit of time in one instance, an a unit of distance in another, and it was just a genuine accidental, unintentional consistency error, no biggie. I can over look it. The issue that I have is Lucas being unable to simply admit it. He always has to make these things look like they were planned this way when they clearly weren't. It's kind of like the errors from the color timing of the 2004 OT DVD release, with the really messed up lightsaber shots (some of which were fixed for the BD release). When complaints started coming in about these issues, the official Lucasfilm response was that these were "deliberate artistic decisions" or something akin to that. Does your "fantasy" excuse explain that away as well? And further more, there is the UOT issue. Not even so much the fact that Lucas won't release it, but the ongoing, changing excuses that he gives. One time it will be because he simply doesn't want to release it because it doesn't represent his artistic vision, then it's because the elements no longer exist or are in too bad of shape to restore at all, then it's because it's "too expensive". So which is it? While I disagree with it, at least I can understand where he's coming from on the first reason, and at least that reason can co-exist with either of the other two. But the latter two excuses are complete contradictions. If the elements simply no longer exist in a state which can be used to restore the UOT, then cost isn't even a factor. All of the money in the world isn't going to fix something that is completely unfix-able. Either it can be done and it costs a lot, or it just can't be done. Which is it, George? I could at least give the guy some additional credit and respect if he was consistent and honest. But there have been a few too many contradictions and holes in his explanations over the course of time. If he would just admit to the occasional error like the previous ones mentioned, that would go a long way. For the UOT issue, if he would just simply stick to his choice not to release them, and stop ad-hocing inconsistent excuses to it (or at least clarify what the true state of the original elements are, and explain what it would cost to restore the UOT, assuming it can be fixed), I could give him a bit more slack. Sure, I would still want the UOT released, but at least things wouldn't come across as shady with him as they so often do. As for your whole myth/fantasy vs. sci-fi debate, let's face some realities of the matter here: -Even if Star Wars is first and foremost a myth/fantasy, it still contains many sci-fi elements and is still to a certain extent a sci-fi franchise. -Whether or not you want to agree with the previous point, your example of the explosions in space that couldn't exist in reality is not at all a good measure by which to dictate Star Wars as being a fantasy rather than Sci-Fi since many sci-fi franchises (such as Star Trek) have done the exact same thing with ships blowing up in space, etc. And really, the space explosions don't bother me. I can suspend disbelief for something like that. No big deal, as long as it's consistent. But when rules and terms are created specifically for the films series, they should be consistent throughout in their meaning. The meaning of a term shouldn't magically change from one movie to another with no explanation. And if it's just an honest error, then no big deal, just admit it. I can accept a minor error such as the inconsistency in what a parsec is, but I have a low tolerance for the arrogance that goes into arguing in favor of it being consistent (when it CLEARLY isn't), slapping together some half-assed explanation, and then telling anyone who disagrees that they are wrong. Either a parsec was meant as a unit of time in ANH, or Han just went on a pointless tangent about the capabilities of his ship and himself as a pilot that had nothing to do with Obi Wan's question. Which is it? Last edited by Dynamo of Eternia; 10-01-2011 at 06:56 AM. |

Just wanted to throw my two cents in here ... I "cashed in" 10,000 reward points from my credit card for a $100 Amazon gift card and got The Complete Saga and Thor 3D for $7.99, so I'd have to say well worth it!! lol ... It took me a week to finish all 6 movies but I have to say I have never been happier watching Star Wars. The worst looking was AOTC imo. I thought ROTS even had a few issues here and there where certain elements in a scene just looked really "staticy" (ie Anakins hair in the opera scene with palpatine). Other than those few scenes the movie looked great!! I though TPM look amazing, yeah some of the CGI looked a bit dated but that didn't bother me ... As for the OT, All three films looked FANTASTIC!!! Yeah I still think that some of the changes are pointless (ie Vaders Nooooo!!!) However, NONE of them bothered me!!! I was in such aww at how great these movies looked that even the changes couldn't ruin it for me. As for the audio, across all 6 movies the Surround Sound was amazing!!! really brought the movies to life in a way I have never experienced before!!! I have to say that in my opinion Star Wars has never looked or sounded this good ... it was like watching a movie I had never seen before (in a good way). I know that some will question my eyesight, intelligence, or HDTV callibration but I REALLY enjoyed this release!!!
