Got to finally watch some SW on BD. I think Episode 4 and 5 have nice picture but would have liked somewhat less DNR. The grain is indeed frozen. When R2 moves in the desert, he drag his own halo of grain with him, which is suspect!

It looks like the set is an upgrade over the DVDs but I'll look for an eventual remaster in coming years.

Checked my laserdiscs of the theatrical versions and the "frozen grain" so many have referred to exists there as well during that scene. Doesn't seem like a result of Lowry.

An eventual remaster when? On the next format? It's going to be a very long time before we see Star Wars released on physical media again... at least without using the same exact encodes that appear on these discs.

And whose sock-puppet account are you? Your post wasn't full of BS about mythology and overlooking obvious narrative flaws, so it can't be Shaft Windu; and there's no fawning over TPM so it can't be Beast. Any ideas, fellow forum members?

EDIT: My guess is that it's probably s2mikey, since he started the exchange by suggesting that people who aren't PT fans not discuss them. If you want to go somewhere that has 100% uncritical (and wholly unwarranted) love of the PT, go somewhere like http://www.jarjarroxxors!111!.com instead.

I wasn't aware that DNR was used in the OT. I thought it was only TPM and AOTC?

The Laserdisc masters (from the 'Definitive' set onwards) were smothered with DNR which created some nasty smearing. The 2004 Lowry masters have had a different process applied, but the artefacts are somewhat similar. Lowry's remastered Bond movies have the 'frozen grain' artefact too; it's terrible in Moonraker. Part of me's fearing what we're gonna get when the remaining Bond titles get released on Blu.

For my money there's no DNR in Clones though. The movie's simply soft as shot.

From Creating the Worlds of Star Wars: 365 Days by John Knoll.

"Basically, we found that the images we'd recorded on film for Episode I were noticeably softer than what we were getting from the HD cameras on Episodes II and III, so we actually had to "dumb it down" as George says. In some ways the Pro-Mist filters were simply the continuation of a photographic style, since we had previously used them on Episode I; although so much has been printed about digital cameras not having the same resolution as film—it's just not true."

Well, I guess I'm in the minority of most SW fans because TPM was probably my favorite of the PT, despite still not understanding the entire 'treaty' plot.

AOTC love story was unwatchable at times and I just really didn't like Hayden in either of his two films. The third film had some of the worst dialouge I have ever heard, but overall it was much better than AOTC.

I just finished all six of them last night. I noticed some small changes here and there without spoiling myself online, like Wickets new eyes and a Sebulba-like Dug walking down the stairs in Jabba's palace. Pretty enjoyable experience all the way around IMO. OT needs another facelift though.

Got that book right here, bro. People keep seeing the DNR boogeyman at every turn, but it's just not true in the case of Clones. Phantom Menace, on the other hand...

Good luck there. It took 5 years for the movies to even come to the Blu-ray format. A remaster? Not likely. And even so, they'll likely use these same transfers if another release happens.

No sock puppet account here junior! Just a regular adult. You are of course entitled to your own opinions on a public forum such as this, but acting as if your opinions are diffinitive is extremely childish! So what if people like the prequel trilogies and you don't? Are you so insecure that it bothers you that much? You've already stated your disdain for them on several occasions. Everyone clearly understands your position by now. Don't you think it's time for you (and some others) to move on and contribute something worthwhile to this thread for once instead of putting down someone else's love for a particular set of films?

Slightly OT, but w/e-

My 6 year old daughter just finished the Return of the Jedi portion in the Lego Star Wars video game. At the end of Return of the Jedi they even have a crappy looking Hayden Christensen Lego character ghost. Boy, oh boy. LOL!

Due to your poor spelling and grammar, abuse of the "whip" smiley, and apparent love of the PT, I call shenanigans on your claim of being an adult.

As for contributions, where are yours? At least I've contributed a cogent argument as to why the PT should not be seen as co-equal to the original Star Wars Trilogy and weakens the franchise as a whole (along with the so-called "Special Editions"). All you've done is try to get non-PT-lovers to go away because they hurt your feelings.

What I wanted to say is that I thought there was *some* dnr in Ep 4 and 5, not that is was totally scrubbed clean like Episode 1. Most movies shot on film should have grain, moving grain, especially movies from the 70-80s. When little grain/frozen grain is seen in a transfere, it's because of some dnr, even if slight.

It seems the thread has slowed down a bit two weeks after the release, as expected.

The arguments will rage on, but I mean this sincerely that I forgot how passionate SW fans are regardless of preference of UOT/SpecialEd/PT/etc.

I haven't cared much about SW since around 2006. I haven't followed the EU, Clone Wars, or much of anything else. In a way all the uproar has awakened my love for the OT in its unaltered form.

This year we had two huge releases with controversial issues - LOTR EE (FOTR green tint) and SW (various alterations, PQ, 2004 colors). Not to derail, but what do you guys think will be the next BD release that inspires similar passionate discussion?

Now what did I do? I thought my suggestion was sound advice. It was for your own benefit. Jes trying to help.

Some people feel the strengths or entertainment value of the PTs outweigh the sometimes dodgy script and suspect dialog. Thats all it is. Its not quite the end of the world...although som of ya'll are getting awfully messed up over it. Does Lucas have THIS much power over mankind?

Jurassic Park could be the next debate : Universal less than perfect catalog releases habits VS Spielberg great releases so far!
