Myself being a technically challenged sort, why is the 1080p the end of the line?

Looking at SW(ANH), I was kind of dumbfounded to remember that movie only cost $10 -$11 million to make. I keep asking myself how they did that, it looks like a $100M movie with all those props, costumes, locations and effects.

And I would have liked to see Darth Maul at least make it over into EP2, he is a very neat creation killed too soon, as was Qui-Jon.

ps. I wandered through my local HMV today and there is not a copy of the complete saga to be found, only the separate trilogy sets at $49.99 each. Very odd unless they sold out of the TCS and haven't been restocked yet.

Because they were filmed digitally. They're "stuck" at that resolution.

I see, whereas a "film" original could be re-scanned at a higher resolution. Gotcha, thanks.

Nothing is 'stuck' at any resolution. It is merely limited to that detail resolution

It could be doubled in size, but you would see a loss in quality.

I'm sure in 20 years it won't matter there will be some technology that scales things up well.

in 3-5 years 2160p TV's will commonly upscale 1080p bluray, as well. It won't be the biggest deal everyone makes out. A lot of consumers will likely just do that. Buying 1080p players and movies, and let the TV upscale to the ultra HD

I've been using that pic of me in a Star Wars costume from 1977 for a while now.

Might have something to do with the strong teal tint plastered all over the film. Just a guess.

Measley 1080p? What? Ill agree that the PT didnt blow me away video-wise but lets not overstate it! 4K blu-ray? I aint rebuying all my titles. Did that going from VHS to DVD and then DVD to blu-ray. This is my last "physical" media format and I suspect most people are thinking the same thing. It can only be so good. Our eyes have limitations.

I realize that some transfers are better than others and some are flat-out disappointing. But, for the most part, blu-ray releases look and sound spectacular. If people find they dont then its a gear problem - probably the TV or projector that are causing the issues. Of course, KURO owners dont comprehend "bad" video images". Weve never experienced that.

Podcast discussing the Blu-ray release with "Marc Wielage" who did the Color Grading on Star Wars Episodes IV and VI. Interesting listen to those interested in the Blu-ray tranfser process.
www.fxguide.com/thevfxshow/the-vfx-show-133-star-wars-blu-ray-release/

EDIT: Marc Wielage did the grade for the 2004 DVD release.

I don't have a costume of Star Wars....does wearing my t-shirt of Han Solo saying "Damn Right I Shot First" is alright?

Funny, my kids have always called him egghead (the Darth Vader with out the helmet). I think that's from Sonic Video games/TV show.

The same went for Laserdisc. I didn't expect the '93 DC extras on the '95 Faces set or the '97 SE set.

It's the change of format and not bringing the previous extras out of the dead formats that I have a serious disagreement with. Leaving FSWTJ, the three Laserdisc set extras, the VHS extras, and the DVD extras behind on dead/dying formats is just cheap, shortsighted, and stupid.
I think the biggest short coming is not including all the deleted scenes from the PT DVD releases and Empire of Dreams. Would have been nice to have those in HD. Other than that, it was a good set of extras. It could have been a GREAT set of extras, but who knows what the reasoning was. I don't buy the "He doesn't like to transfer over old extras..." argument, because I have never heard Lucas actually say that. Also I think the PT released on DVD was just the same dvds from before put in a new box? Oh, and the OT DVDs had the same audio commentary as before, just included the UOT as bonus discs. My guess is he just wanted all the material to be new this time around.

Because it was shot on an early-gen HD digital camera system. It was the best available at the time, but obviously the technology has improved in the last decade.

I doubt consumer TVs will go beyond 1080p, especially for run of the mill sized ones; theres only so much the human eye picks up on.

Even if we do get ultra-HD TVs, it wouldn't be for many many years as people are still buying DVDs and also if we do get ultra-HD TVs, I'm sure there will be some new technology that upscales II and III whilst preserving detail.

4K is closer than you think. We will probably start seeing 4K projectors for consumers in the next 5 years.

We may - but whos gonna be buying? It might be like the 3D thing: Lots of hype and push but few actual adopters. People have a tough time seeing big differences between BD and DVD. It will be a tough sell, IMO.

As I said - this is my last physical disc/whatever format. Im pretty content right now with the "state" of the video hobby. Things have never been better for the home user and that explains theater attendance being down. A moderately good home system with a good audio front-end and a top-tier display is freegin good..... I mean really good as is.

By the time 4K becomes mainstream, Lucas will have replaced so much of the OT with CG Gungans and Hayden Christensen overlays that it might actually be useful for Star Wars! (Or, at least what's left of it by then...)

Given how few catalog releases are coming out on BD... and how many of those have mediocre, older transfers offering only marginal improvements over their DVD counterparts... I'm not overly excited or optimistic about any format increase over 1080p.

True dat, that's why I'm going all out this time. I was a little reserved with VHS and DVD, but I can't see studios improving catalog titles to even higher levels when they often give half-efforts now. And the ones that do look stellar look so good on blu that I can't imagine getting much more out of an image in a future format. Maybe on new films made before 2000, sure, but not on catalog titles older than that. I mean, look at Taxi Driver--its awesome. I just don't see much more fine detail being squeezed out of a movie like that.
