Obi Wan killed a Maul clone. Watch. It'll definitely be something unimaginative along those lines. *yawn*

Hopefully, they can do better...although The Clone Wars has been hit and miss with much of its plots, I wouldn't be surprised if they did have a stupid explanation for it. The show's team knows that this is a big deal, so hopefully they will think it through more and make a great storyline out of it. Many of the episodes this season have been lackluster, so hopefully the trend wil reverse by spring...

I know you have to suspend disbelief in order to make sci-fi enjoyable. I get that.

But the dude was SLICED IN HALF and fell down a shaft that seemed almost bottomless. Come on! It's just like when I read those Timothy Zahn novels and Luke had a clone called Luuuke ....some things are best just left as they are.

But no worries, I'll just summarize it with no link this time.

First, a small news update: The 3D Phantom Menace trailer can be seen as early as October 21st, in front of the 3D release of The Three Musketeers.

Now a more major update, somewhat related,
[Show spoiler]It's Alive!!! Amidst most speculation, Darth Maul is now officially reported as "alive." He will return "This Spring." Since i can't seem to post a link, just google "usa today Darth Maul" for details and a pic as they were the first to get the scoop.

I know some consider Maul to be a boring, static character, but he only had about 3 lines and a few flips in the entire film...not much chance for character development if you ask me. I have always thought that Maul (along with Vader) were the most bada** and visually impressive Sith in the films. I would have liked to have seen more of Maul in the prequels, as the Duel of the Fates is IMO the best part of Phantom.

Apparently, in the TV show he will return for much longer than a "short-lived stunt" and will be meeting his brother and still holds a grudge against lil' Obi I hope the show will flesh his character out some more, giving him more substance as well as including some good ol' fashioned Jedi butt-kicking.

However, they have to provide a thorough and plausible explanation for his survival. If he just shows up and no explanation follows, I'll be very ticked. Also, if the show's creators screw this up, it will be a monumental fail. They need to do it right.

So, thoughts anyone? How did Maulie survive Obi's slice and dice? Is he now a rogue Sith/Dark Jedi/Thingie? What about the Rule of Two Sith at a time, does Sidious know Maul's alive? What about Dooku, does he feel threatened by Maul? Why da heck has Maul not shown himself or tried to "get revenge" before now, 12 years after his death? Did Sidious disown him for his failure or something? Discuss away...
I think there's fleshed out story in the EU where he survives. They might be borrowing from that.

Yeah I think that was in the Visions comic, although it's not considered "canon." They probably used it as a reference point. I definitely think you are right about them using the same design though, the video of the new Maul on ew.com looks very similar.

Well...maybe in the upcoming 3D version George changes his fate by instead of him getting cut in half...Kenobi just kicks him down the shaft instead-

[Show spoiler]

I could see Lucas doing something like that...couldn't you?

From IMDB:

[Show spoiler]There are two versions of the climactic finale where Darth Maul is killed by Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the original, he is seen falling down the reactor shaft, dead but in one piece. In the updated version (in general release), he is seen falling down the shaft in two pieces, cut in half at the torso. Apparently, original press screenings presented the first version, but the second version is what most people will see to make it clear that Maul is dead.

That first version was one that we saw at the 12:01am showing back in May of 1999. Oddly enough, when we went back to that theater the next day, the other version was in the print. Very odd.

I watched the midnight release of TPM and it had Darth Maul falling into two pieces. I have never heard of that version.....

LOL, shoddy police work by the Jedi. "But which was destroyed? The Master or the Apprentince?" At least Palpatine had the good sense in ROTS to have his troops try and find Yoda's body after the fight in the senate. You'd think they would try and recover Maul's body (I dunno, maybe to check his wallet for ID...lol).

Anyway, its more of that 'less is more' thing, ya know? Just wish they would leave some characters well enough alone.

Ugh. Zabrans are a race, they all look like Darth Maul, why not just write a new Zabran Sith Lord, instead of resuscitating Maul? It's not like his personality was just so winning that they needed him back, specifically. He spoke like 4 times.

He was cut in half and then fell down a bazillion feet. His return is already disappointing.

"Hey Darth, we just like, Force-glued your torso back onto your legs, with like, The Force."

"How did you..."

"The Force, bro."

"Yeah but like, I was in ha-"

"The Force".

"... Ok, I see what you're saying, but as I was saying, Obi-Wan cut me in half right at the wai-"

"The Force glued you back ok? It was The Force."

"But d-"

"The Force!"

"Ok, now you're just being an ass. Can you explain exactly how this 'Force Glue' put me back to-"

"Ok, like... Darth Sidious, right? He like... was waiting right below that reactor that you fell into, and he... uh, was on this ship... and it like, floated at the same speed you were falling, and then he uh, he used like that Force Lightning thing to sort of weld your torso back on to the... leg part..."

"... Okay, if you're not going to take this thing seriously, I'm out".

In the original novelization of ROTJ ... Anakin fell into a pit of molten lava and was basicly destroyed (ROTS didn't do a great job of visualizing how f**ked up this guy was) also General Grievis was killed in a straship crash and was basicly a few organs when he was recovered. Don't see how Maul surviving is THAT unbelieveable.

No...he used The Force to make everyone believe that he was sliced in half because he realized during that battle that he forgot to go grocery shopping and he was also late for his tatoo appointment and that was the only way to get out of the fight.

If you use that comparison for the original trilogy, and the DVDActive list for the prequels (and the audio changes of the OT), then you get the complete picture, I believe.

I'm sorry, I've ignored the changes to the prequels. As KubrickFan mentioned a combo of the two is probably complete.

The Phantom Menace 3D Poster
The official poster for "The Phantom Menace" 3D is here. I must say I don't like it. It only features fan-favourites like Maul, Digi-Yoda and the Pod-Race and I'm missing other iconic main characters like Anakin, Qui Gon, Padme or Jar Jar. It's too dark and doesn't capture the excitement of Episode I. They are playing it safe with this poster...
