so I Netflixed Episode 3 and AOTC out of sheer curiosity....ROTS looks and sounds amazing. On a technical level, wowzers. Reference quality PQ and AQ for sure. The movie itself still leaves me cold afterwards, though. Hadn't seen it in a couple years...my opinion of it hasn't changed much. Still the "best" of the prequels, albeit with far too many inconsistencies and laughably bad acting. Ian Mcdarmind was fantastic up to the point he says "noo...NOOO...YEWW WILL DIEEE!" /facepalm. But yeah, if it were sold separately from the first two, I'd definitely buy it. Maybe I can find a cheap copy on Ebay or something.

watching AOTC right now. Will offer my unwarranted opinion afterwards.

Just ordered on Amazon...but the 2 seperate releases. HATE the package design/artwork for the complete boxed set. I really only like the original trilogy, but not everyone in my household agrees....

Default A New Hope

Finally got around to watching A New Hope tonight. After reading so much negativity surrounding it, my expectations were lowered. Boy was I wrong. This movie absolutely rocked! The dialog was crisp and clear, the LFE was thunderously deep and the surrounds were very active. It's been years since I last saw this. Man, at the beginning when the little rebel cruiser is getting chased by the Imperial Star Destroyer had me literally grinning from ear-to-ear. I felt like a little kid again. When Luke blew up the Death Star, you felt the explosion ring move thru you and the room. Way cool feeling.

One caveat; When Vader and Obi-Wan were dueling it seemed every time their lightsabers made contact a yellow/greenish flash appeared. I've never noticed this before and even my kids asked about it. It was a bit distracting.

watching AOTC now...it looks really good so far. I just hate that everything looks so clean and flawless. Green screen CGI overdose galore in this movie so far.

Obi and Anakin come busting into Padme's room...the lightsaber sounds are awesome! Lots of bass in the saber swings. Stupid ugly fake CGI aliens in the space cars...zzzzzz.

I forgot how creepy and disturbing that initial conversation between Padme and Anakin is. Holy Christ if I were Padme I'd be weirded out and asking for another protector ASAP. This guy hasn't seen her in 10 years, and he goes into this unprovoked tirade. "I'M READY FOR THE TRIALS!" He sounds like a psychopath. It's like seeing an old friend you haven't spoken to in years and he comes over to your place whining about the price of his car insurance out of nowhere.

And while most 35mm projection is crap, good 35mm projection is far from it.
I pay the extra money to go to whatever is in the "Ultra AVX" cinema, and movies in there look incredible.

Fair enough, and I can't contest your tech specs (or what they mean), but I still say TPM looked better when I saw it theatrically 19 times in 1999. Now who's the expert?

"Top marks on clarity"? Wtf does that even mean? It lacks fine detail, yet it's "clear"?

Show me one "reference quality shot" in the whole 2 hour plus runtime. Good luck with that.

It is only marginally better than those titles. In fact, The Big Lebowski looks better than it.
Just about every Blu-ray release has *some* DNR. I bet a lot of titles you think look great still contain a minor amount of it. You can still add DNR while maintaining film grain structure. DNR is a tool that can serve its purpose, but can be abused like anything else.

You and I will just disagree as we seem to be in two different camps on this (not looking to fight as this is very much subjective to one's opinion). I agree with the reviewer on this site that TPM looks 'ehhh' to his eye and mine. I will certainly agree with you that there are moment where it looks great (as you have shown), but to me those are fleeting moments. I prefer film grain, which is nonexistant on my copy of the film and I watched it on a projector too.

I would not call TPM 'reference' by any stretch of the imagination (this is not Avatar). Better than the DVD? Oh hells yes. As good as or equal to AOTC, ROTS, or the OT? No way. I look at other films from 1999 and it doesn't even rank well against those (Fight Club as an example). Anyway, its just opinion. I am glad there are several whom enjoy TPM the way it looks, I just feel it could have looked a LOT better (at least equal to ANH, which was a stunner) and was a bit disappointed is all.

(note: I edited out the pics of your post as I didn't want to clog up the forum/wanted to save space. If anyone is interested, crazyBLUE's pics are about two pages back. He has a sweet set up...).

Finally found the time to watch Episode 6 this week-end, after all the Clone Wars and the Holiday Special and the cartoon plus Ewoks movies all in chronological order (that was crazy by the way...)

Can you validate that Return of the Jedi is blurry sometimes, like an out of focus lense, mainly on the Endor moon? Other than than, it was great...

Edit: ok, I'm not crazy!
Quote:
There are certain scenes that look soft—I'm specifically thinking of the first few shots when our heroes land on Endor's forest moon—but any softness seems inherent in the cinematography, not introduced later due to DNR. Any filtering of the original trilogy is minimal; there are no clay-like, Vaseline- smeared faces to worry about here. You can tell occasionally that the image has been lightly cleaned up, but grain is visible and better yet, the prints are absolutely pristine.

Kissing is something to be seen on a big screen with a whole lot of grain around it, anything else doesn't cut it

Seriously. Whoever said that it was anywhere in the league of upconverted DVD is either drinking hateraid or just retarded. Problems with TPM are overstated and are mostly deliberate (as far as the DNR) and the best it's going to be for some time.

Nice pics crazyBlue. Definitely high def detail in TPM.
