I'm not getting into an argument of which was better (that's all subjective), but Star Wars was never eligible to be nominated for any Academy Awards. It's really stupid, but apparently George Lucas putting the actors names/credits only at the end of the film violated some rule and he was fined a lot of money from the director's association (or whatever it was called), so he paid the fine and quit the association. So, his films are never allowed to be nominated now, but he gets to make them however he wants to.

I read about that years ago.

I think every film has been nominated for Oscar's be they Best Picture (Star Wars), SFX or Make-up (Revenge of the Sith)....

Lucas started the credits at the end of the movie with American Graffiti to thank everyone involved (if I'm remembering correctly).

It's already an incredible bargain for that price. 6 movies, 3 discs of extras, well worth every penny.

When you look at cost compared to value for what you're getting, it's already less than what most movies go for.

It's $13 a movie, pretty hard to ask for a cheaper price

Oh, I was just going by what I read. I can't find the info about not being able to be nominated (did a quick search), but here's what I did find:

Quote:
Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now (1979) even went so far as to not feature the title at all, except briefly as a graffiti sketch in Colonel Kurtz’ (Brando) compound. George Lucas is credited with popularizing this with his Star Wars films which display only the film's title at the start. His decision to omit opening credits in his films Star Wars (1977) and The Empire Strikes Back (1980) led him to resign from the Directors Guild of America after being fined $250,000 for not crediting the director during the opening title sequence.

Indeed. Especially when most people jump on new release movies for $14.99 as a good bargain.

Well I finished the films yesterday. Haven't had a chance to jump on the special features but that'll happen soon enough. I can't believe I held out on this. Watching the changes gives you a "meh" feeling all around but watching them as they happen in the films didn't bother me near as much as I thought it would. I still know there are people refusing to buy this because the unaltered original trilogy is nowhere to be found, but if you can find the power to get over yourself and not let a douche like Lucas prevent you from watching some of your favorite films in hi-def, this is an easy buy. I'm glad I caved and picked it up.

Even so, some of the changes should be welcomed. My freegin goodness, enough with the UOT whining. The effects clean up along with overall improvements to some scenes are great, IMO. As has been said a zillion times, the Battle of Yavin in its freshened up form is WAY better than the UOT version. The scenes that have been updated to better match the look of the PT should also be embraced. The UOT suffers from some technical issues and effects blunders that have no place in such films.

That being said, of COURSE Han shot first. The Jabba scene at Mos Eisly is stoopid. A couple of the zany CG character moments aren't needed either. But most of it doesn't really change anything so I never understood all the anguish that this apparently has caused the world.

Guess th UOT doodes will just have to clench their Laserdisc and watch that. Sorry.

Yes, because glossing over film fans' justified concerns about the deliberate revisionist defacement of a cultural hallmark while using copious amounts of misspellings really helps drive home your point (that is, assuming your point was that you're a PT fan whose mindset is dangerously close to that of the target audience for the Clone Wars cartoon [or perhaps Caravan of Courage])...

OK, then: Mos Eisley. Zainy. Did I miss any others?

Whats being glossed over? Im the biggest fan of the OT anywhere. Just because Id prefer to not watch ships fly through planets, light sabres disappear, or miss out on some fantastic additional dog fighting scenes in the Yavin battle doesnt make me less of a fan than you or any of the other "Godly" UOT fans. Because I like how some of the redone backgrounds and such simply make the OT look like it might have actually happened after the PT doesnt lessen my love for the OT. They are the films that started this all and will always be the most important in the series.

My mindset is that we can appreciate the UOT for what it was, just like we can appreciate the carburetor or the tube TV. But, visual updates should be welcomed when they actually fix problems. Sure, CONTENT changes suck - like the Han shooting first issue. I hate that as much as you guys do. But, most(not all) of the rest of it is worthwhile. And, yes, the Jabba barge music change sucks too. forgot about that one.

No need to insult though or take it personally. Relax. Friend.

You just don't get it. It's not just the concept of what's being shown on the screen that's relevant, how it was created originally also matters. All 3 original films got Oscar wins for their visual effects (as compared to ZERO for the PT), and you're in favor of scrapping the practical and optical effects with "new and improved" digital compositing and glossy CG non-sequitur garbage like the Jawa riding a bucking "ronto" outside Mos Eisley and the exceedingly annoying "Jedi Rocks"...

Using your argument, movies before the development of synchronized sound should have their intertitle cards removed and dialogue looped in, and all those outdated black-and-white films should be colorized and the original versions lost to history!

The OT films are more than strong enough to stand on their own merits without having to be debased by so-called "improvements" and ham-fisted visual "upgrades" to fall more in line with the PT. The world did just fine with only three Star Wars films for almost 20 years, and it would not have been any type of loss if "Jar-Jar's Bombad Adventure" and "Lil' Ani Goes Emo" were never made...

The problem is that Lucas was so preoccupied with whether he could "fix" things that didn't need fixing that he didn't stop to think if he should. But then again he's been surrounded by "yes-men" for over 30 years (ever since he fired Gary Kurtz) so it's not surprising that such an outcome has come to pass.

yup,it won prizes in its original form,so as one says...why fix it when it aint broke, just plain stupid what he did and still is doing!
he should take a example from Spielberg...he asked during a panel at the fans wheter he should release ET director's cut or just the original theatrical version....theatrical they shouted out "oke,so it will be then"
now THAT is a director who cares about his fans and their thinking and what WE like to have,Lucas could learn from that, but i guess its to late now....
