i picked up a copy of the original trilogy today. i wouldnt consider myself to be a huge star wars fan but every few years i get the itch to watch either some star wars. i know there is a lot of debate about george lucas and what hes done to these movies but im looking forward to watching some star wars tonight. i wanted to buy the whole saga box set but i have a hard time plopping down darn near 100 smackaroos on blu rays. heck i debate withmyself long and hard about making a 40 dollar purchase. from everything ive heard the PQ and AQ (regardless of changes made) on the original trilogy is amazing and im sure ill find out soon enough. but what i really want to know is the PQ and AQ really not so great on the PT? im sure its in this thread somewhere but digging through this thing is like looking for that needle in the haystack

The PT is somewhat a mixed bag. TPM is the worst of the bunch (IMO). There is some obvious DNR going and in some shots definition is lacking/waxy looking. Very soft and lacking some fine detail, then moments later there is a strong image with none of the before listed problems. So, its mixed. Def the worst of all 6 movies.

ATOC and ROTS have exceptional transfers though. ROTS especially. If you can find this set onsale it is very much worth it. Just remember TPM isn't the strongest PQ and not representative of the other two films in the set if you start watching that one first.

In short.

PQ wise ROTS is the best, followed by ROTJ, ESB, ANH, AOTC and finally TPM.

The original trilogy could have used a new 4K master but looks good. Attack of the Clones has a slight teal shift and is a bit soft due to the camera used (an early digital HD camera). The Phantom Menace has had DNR applied, which has removed detail (though it varies throughout the movie). Still, since the original TPM DVD was so bad it has improved the most of all 6 movies from DVD to Blu ray.

Audio wise, they are all as good as they can sound (and the PT has the edge here, simply due to the improvements in audio technology from 1983 tot 1999). Personally I think all 6 are simply brilliant and the clear highlights in terms of AQ in my collection.

I think A New Hope is the worst looking one.

Yeah, of them all, you can tell it's the oldest looking (not just from a production value standpoint).

Both the original trilogy and the prequels look good on blu-ray with ROTS being the best transfer. Sure the original trilogy is not going to look it's best because the films are close to 35 years old with ANH being the oldest. You can't expect perfection with every transfer in the set yes their are flaws in the transfers in the OT and TPM transfers but not as bad at some have pointed out.

I also enjoyed the novels of The Courtship of Princess Leia and The Jedi Academy Trilogy.

I wonder if Lucas can be bothered to fix the color of Luke's lightsaber In A New Hope when he gets around to releasing it it 3D? He changes things that need to be left alone yet he has had 4 chances to make it blue.
I had the same gripe about the alien bully's blood not being digitally removed from the Catina Bar. The heat of the lightsaber by all means would cauterize the wound!

The colors are STILL out of wack from the first SE days, not to mention the contrast issues they have.

Most older BD films don't seem to have this problem.

Correct. With George at the helm overseeing things you sure got that right.

Hopefully in a few years Criterion get their hands on A New Hope at least and give it the attention that it deserves.

Duffy12 , I'm not bothered by the color issues why it bothers some fans I can't understand but you have to understand director's change the color of their films GL is not the 1st to do this. It is what it is.

oh great, Ken's back to give us more of his extraordinary redundant views on the Star Wars Blu-Rays, including extremely obvious information like which movie is the oldest in the series. Thank goodness! I'm not sure what we would do without that!

Dynamo of Eternia if you don't like my views on the blu-rays that's fine but please don't stay they are redundant because they are not.

For all of you saying that "A New Hope" shouldn't look good because of it's age need to do watch some older transfers like "how the west was won". That movie looks better than most movies released last year.

Bottom line is, new 4K transfers would have made ANH, ESB, ROTJ and TPM look very good, probably better than the two films shot digitally.....

Georgie Boi cheaped out and didn't do a proper job on the Star Wars box set. Everyone needs to quit standing up for him.

Doubt it, people have to realize that Star Wars rarely goes on sale. It has been that way when it was released on VHS, Laser Disc, and DVD, Lucasfilm knows that regardless of what price point they have on the saga that it will sell, so their is no incentive for them to lower the price anytime soon.

I agree with you. I feel ROTJ has the best PQ in the OT followed by Empire.
