Does anyone think we might finally see the Holiday Special now? Lucas saw it as an embarassment, Disney will likely see it as one more source of $$$.

I really don't think this news means we will see the unaltered original trilogy or the Star Wars holiday special for that matter. I think too many of you are assuming too much..

This is going to end up like Star Trek for most of us methinks. We'll have a ton of movies to choose from, but each fan will like certain ones and not like others, and each person's Star Wars movie collection will be different.

"Well, I like the classic unaltered trilogy and episodes 8-10 enough to own them, and I liked watching episodes 11 and 13, but not enough to buy them. The rest is trash IMHO. Hopefully, when Star Wars episode 15: The Wrath of Yoda comes out this summer, it will be good. David Fincher has promised us 'Fight Club in Space', so we'll see."

Star Trek or Bond, yeah. Which is one of the main reasons I've stayed away a lot of the director talk.

Some will be good, some not so good and either way the franchise will chug merrily along so why get too tightly wrapped over any of this stuff.

Agreed!! Disney will forge ahead and bring new life to the series. New blood could be just what the Dr. ordered. I laugh when I see people saying Star Wars is dead now, etc....gimme a break. Disney won't wait 20 years in between sequels, they will mine all the good source material they can & there's tons of it. Considering how many fan boys bashed Lucas for the prequels, you'd think they'd be jumping for joy. Lucas is right about them, damned if you do, damned if you don't. They're NEVER happy. I'd take the 4 billion and run too!!

Fox still owns the theatrical/home release rights of I-VI until 2020.

So if we ever get the original, unaltered trilogy, it would have to wait until then. Maybe as a part of the I-IX box set?

We will see the UOT before that date. With Lucas out of direct control and off to the side now (and Fox's time running out) they will want to capitalize on their license as much as possible.

I would not be surprised if meetings about such a set were already in progress.

Well if Fox/Disney struck a deal we could see a new box set before the new movie. I don't know about the unaltered trilogy, but fingers crossed.

Says who? It could be worse or they could insert their own problems. Disney has plenty of opportunities to screw this up. Not saying they will, just pointing out that they could muck it up.

that is actually something i am afraid of. Star Trek is a great example - the original movies were a little hit and miss at times but you had actors from the original series and writers and directors like Nick Meyers who respected product so they were treated properly for the most part. With TNG, it was in syndication so there wasn't as much network interferance. Once the Network got involved, mostly from Voyager forwards, Star Trek went spinning out of control because even with Rick Berman as executive producer(like him or hate him), he lost the control that he had when Star Trek was just a fan thing and not a true money maker for Paramount. Look what we ended up with because of that . with Star Wars, for better or worse, Lucas always had final say. with the new movies, Lucas is no longer really a factor, the actors are all too old so they won't really be able to say "change this or i won't appear" and with the CGI from Tron, they can create almost whoever they want. you could see some very good movies, or you could see the hot director of the moment come in and try and put his/her spin on Star Wars and totally mess it up like in Trek.

I wouldn't worry about Fox right now. in the end, the only distribute the movie, not own it. if Disney decides they want to release the original versions or anything else, Fox will do it as they make money for really doing nothing.

Yeah, Bond is what came to mind for me. I am not sure how this can be a bad thing for any Star Wars fan. It means you get more movies. If there is a bad seed, it's not like it's going to "ruin" anything. Does anyone really think any less of Indiana Jones because of the KotCS? And Disney does pretty well with action/adventure movies. For the most part, the Pirates movies are very well done.

Lucas is such an utter a-hole about the unaltered originals that it wouldn't surprise me if he forced a stipulation in the agreement which prevents Disney (or Fox) from releasing them. It would also be his ultimate "f-you" to the fans. Seriously, I would not put this past him.

I would not drop four billion dollars on something that had stipulations like that. For that much money I would want 100% control, otherwise no deal.

But the possibility of your idea isn't completely out of the question. We simply do not know enough at this point.

If there is a significant demand for a product, the Disney Corp will release it. Again, we're not talking about a personal vendetta between an angry old man and his grumpy old fans.
