Oh, THAT Luke Skywalker.

How stupid do you think I am?

Well, he's just a boy. I'm not, you know, plotting anything.

I'm not going to let that kid become a Jedi.

VADER
Hey, maybe he can join our side. Like Simba with Timon and Pumbaa.

EMPEROR
If I had that kid, I wouldn't need you anym-- um, I mean, yes. Yes. Can it be done?

He will join us or die. (ha, ha, we're so going to cut off your hands and your head)

you forgot the part where the Emperor tells Vader "Anakin, I am your father. Just kidding. Can you imagine telling someone that you are their father like that? I mean, how lame would that be."

There is even a hidden Easter Egg where you travel right into Skywalker Ranch and the archives on the first disk.

He doesn't deserve it.
I'm going to keep saying this, even though it doesn't really sink through the non-permeable conceptions people have...

Anakin atones for his crimes, he is not redeemed. He gives the only thing he has -- his life, while bringing down the Empire.

Of course, the same thing that motivated him to atone for his crimes is the same thing that motivated him to become a Sith in the first place...concern for a family member. Note to future Sith Lords...if you hire a guy who will go a killing spree to protect his wife, the same guy might turn on you to protect his son. At the end of the day, Anakin Skywalker is not exactly the type to win any "Altruist of the Year" awards...the guy is as selfish as they come.

I don't know, Luke keep saying he has to SAVE him. Save to me means being redeemed not atonement. Anyway the films are still terrible as they stand, IMO

Spot on. Folks love to smack the prequels around for all the little things not matching up, which is fair enough, but the lyrical nature of the storytelling across the whole saga is a real treat IMO.

Anakin's love for his family is his downfall but also his means of recompense. Vader tortures Han and knows it will attract Luke's attention from across the galaxy because that's what happened to Anakin with his mother. And there's so much more stuff that's riffed on and played with and subverted. Heck, it's the references that get me through Attack Of The Clones. I love Phantom Menace and Sith, but Clones is a bit of a stinker.

When Anakin expires, isn't that the exchange? Luke says he has to save him, and Anakin says he already did? The same passions that motivated Anakin towards Evil are the same passions that motivated him to renounce Evil? That's kind of a Catholic thing (and I'm Catholic, just saying), but before he dies, Anakin repents. He's not "redeemed" per se, he atones, and has renounced evil, and is able to join his brothers in the afterworld. I think you're right -- Luke wanted to "turn" his father in addition to saving his life. but I don't see this as "redemption", I see it as atonement and penance.

I'm one of those few nutters that don't freak out when they see Anakin's Force Ghost as the Anakin before he fell into darkness. I think it's sort of moving, actually. People never complained when they saw Sebastian Shaw standing on human legs with human arms, and not horribly disfigured as a Force Ghost in 1983 -- what's the real difference?

I dunno, it looked an awful lot like all was forgiven.

But who knows. Maybe you're right. Maybe he wasn't completely redeemed. Maybe he had to register as a mass murderer in the afterlife and let all his brothers know whenever he moved.

I've never minded the notion of HaydenGhost - as you say, Shaw's iteration had been 'regenerated' to a non-crispy version, so why not make him non-crispy AND make him look more like the Anakin that we know and love/hate? I totally buy that.

But what bugs me about it is the sloppy execution of the change. Cutting in what I understand to be an outtake at such an emotional moment is Lucas all over; it's a crass, slapdash digital alteration that probably took all of five minutes to think over.

Part of me still hopes that some day they'll get Hayden back in front of the camera to film those ghost shots properly, and him looking older would be a bonus because then we wouldn't get all those 'why has he regenerated back to his young babykiller visage when everyone else is old?' complaints. Stick a visibly older HaydenGhost in there with a performance every bit as paternally proud as Shaw's was in the original, and I reckon that'd placate all but the sternest hater.

You never know, Anakin may well reappear as a Force Ghost in the new trilogy which would be the perfect time to redo those shots.

Id be ok with that ... give him an "Obiwan" style haircut and reshoot him looking like the Jedi he could have been ... some will still hate it but I actually love this idea

It's just weird to me that ghosts can deage? Why didn't we see Ewan as a ghost at the end of Jedi?

Or Yoda! He could grow back the, you know, two extra strands of hair he had in the prequels.

As it stands, imo the 1997 version of Return Of The Jedi has the best ending out of all the different cuts. You have both the Victory Celebration cue which I Prefer to Yub-Nub even that's alright too and you also have Sebastian Shaw as well. You get the best of both worlds *insert Hannah Montana joke here*.

The celebration music used in Return of the Jedi is one of the few things I like about the Special Editions.
