We get to see Anakin and Obi Wan's friendship and camaraderie. We get to see Anakin building his abilities as a Jedi Knight, as well as a military commander, and why he stands out so much as unique and powerful among the Jedi. I think the other prequel films needed to focus on this, instead of Episode I: Nothing happens and Episode II: A bad love story/Some clones show up at the end.
The love story in Episode 2 THE MOVIE, bad. The love story in Episode 2 THE NOVEL, very good and meaningful.

The Episode 2 novel (i have first editions for all 6 films), really go much further in depth of the character of Padme, so much was cut and even not filmed. I highly recommend reading the episode 2 and 3 novels. Also, you may really appreciate all the detail of the father/son relationship between Jango and Boba Fett, it was quite thrilling reading more about them, a great surprise.

The Episode 1 novel has a great introduction to Anakin, much better than the film version. You see Anakin's full commitment and attachment to his mother, and he doesn't come off as such an annoying child. Anakin has an interesting first-time encounter face to face with Tusken Raiders, which sort of creates a deeper darkness and meaning to his later encounter with the Tuskens in episode 2.

The film novels really are quite good writing.

Default New never seen Star Wars bloopers

A reel of never-before-seen bloopers from the classic 1977 film Star Wars has emerged on the internet and gives a fascinating insight into the making of the movie and some of the laughs enjoyed by the legendary cast.
YouTube user Neil Bowyer posted the two minutes and 36 seconds worth of clips online on Sunday and it has already amassed more than 640,000 views and has plenty of interest to anyone with even a passing interest in the sci-fi classic.
The footage includes 10 outtakes, many of which don’t include audio, including comical scenes of a protective cover falling off Luke Skywalker's landspeeder to reveal hidden wheels and Stormtroopers tripping over the set as they attempt to break into Detention Block AA-23 on the Death Star. The clips haven't appeared before in any of the movie's countless DVD or Bluray releases and are excerpts from a new interactive edition of the book The Making of Star Wars (Enhanced Edition)

I purchased the Making of Return of the Jedi book, wow, so cool! Plenty of audio and video clips I've never seen before.

I own physical copies of the two previous books, but now I'm itching to buy the iBook/eBook versions for the extra content.

I would assume they would be the same cuts from the Blu-ray. Unless they really cheaped-out and recycling the old DVDs and Lucas wasn't informed. I'm sure he would want to ensure all release versions are strictly the version that best matches his vision.

if only they would put the Holiday Special out too - then you would have a reason to buy the new set.

For those who purchased the digital editions of the "Making of" books, you might want to check out this thread.

That's good to note! Sad that the video quality isn't as good as it could be on other formats. My 1st generation iPad can't handle the eBook. But thankfully I was able to view it on my Mac.

Some of the included videos are better quality than others. Some look almost HD, while others look straight off of a VHS tape. Either way the footage is something every Star Wars fan would love to see.

Everything else is the problem I have with the movies: We aren't shown the relationship between the two, we are merely told about it (as you mentioned with the implications in the dialogue). All we see in the films is Obi Wan scolding Anakin, while Anakin whines and complains about Obi Wan. Oh, but apparently at some point they had a funny thing happen involving falling into a nest of Gundarks that we didn't get to see. Woo hoo.

Contrast this with the original films, in which we watch the characters meet each other, not really get along at first, but develop a trusted friendship and camaraderie throughout the three films. That's why I love those movies and actually care about those characters.

For me, even though I actually like Episode III okay, I still felt because of the writing and the way the characters were handled, the finale where Anakin and Obi Wan face each other down still kind of falls flat, because throughout all three movies, there was only ONE scene with them at the beginning of the third movie that GENUINELY made them come off as friends and comrades-in-arms.

Until the Clone Wars series came out.
I agree. That's why I have such a huge problem with Anakin being a child in Episode 1. That should have been the movie where Obi-Wan and Anakin meet and become friends. In the OT, Obi-Wan says he thought he could train Anakin as well as Yoda could've. So it would've made more sense to have Obi-Wan fight for Anakin instead of Qui-Gon. Honestly, instead of the Anakin/Padme love story, the theme of the prequels should have been the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin growing strong and falling apart. It would have made the finale of Episode 3 much more intense and emotional. Not to mention, get a better actor than Hayden.

That's pretty much the reason that prequels were received the way they were.

George Lucas turned Star Wars into the "story of Darth Vader". Which it never was when we were growing up. And I don't remember playing with my friends and our Star Wars toys ("This guy says...and then this guy does" LOL - before we all knew their real names) and wondering - "Gee, how did Darth Vader become Darth Vader? I wonder what he was like as a kid!"

I don't want to get all pop psychologist, but I've heard a lot of people make a point that I rather agree with - the OT was Lucas wanting to make a wild space opera, but when he had kids he (for lack of a better word) "felt bad" about basically making Darth Vader "all forgiven" just because he killed the Emperor to save Luke. That all the death and destruction he caused didn't matter because he saved Luke (after bringing him there in the first place).

He didn't like the message that sent once he became a parent. So he told a story that no one really cared about but him - which is great for an art film or something, but I think that's what really disgruntled people.

We were just talking about this in the Halloween thread - about how basically Zombie tried to do the same thing with Michael Myers. In both cases, it's the mystery of the character that was enduring - what was fascinating. Spelling out every little detail from when Vader was a toe-headed little runt essential neutered the character. I can watch the OT, and I can watch the prequels - but besides the wildly different visual styles (they simply don't look like the same universe), I just don't see them as connected - Vader and Anakin simply seem like two totally different characters to me.

A lot of people commonly blame the reaction to the PT as people having "unrealistic expectations" - but I think that was just the easy out, the easy way to explain. I remember going into the theater will almost zero expectations - all I had seen was the trailer a few times. And while the many references and parallels to the OT were pleasing to me, that was pretty much it - I just didn't care about the story (not to mention, we knew how it ended, so there was little suspense - I remember sitting next to my boss, whom I liked to shock, in the theater and leaning over during the midnight showing of TPM and saying when Padme and Anakin were in a scene - "You know they are gonna f&*k in the next movie, right?").

That's why I am so excited about the new films. Not only are they going for the visual style of the films I loved - I have absolutely no notions of what's going to happen, nor what I want to happen. Leia is back, that's all I care about besides that we are going back to the universe I fell in love with as a kid. People already are saying "oh they will never live up to the hype" - but I think that's just the obvious excuse for the lack of respect people have for the PT, when truthfully it's a much deeper issue with the entire concept of the three films at all.
