The tradition was already screwed by Episode I. Until then all the films were good

Seriously, though, who cares about the release date? I'd rather have it sooner than wait until May 2016 just because it's "tradition." You know what? Screw the May tradition. There, I said it.

You want to blame anyone, blame Disney. They're the ones who finalize things like release dates.

But at least they have the foresight not to rush an 18-month production into an already crowded summer, competing with their own Avengers 2 in the same month.

I think December is still much too early, but at least it'll give them an extra seven months for production.

Abrams said he wants it out no matter what in 2015 as well as Iger.

George Lucas turned Star Wars into the "story of Darth Vader". Which it never was when we were growing up. And I don't remember playing with my friends and our Star Wars toys ("This guy says...and then this guy does" LOL - before we all knew their real names) and wondering - "Gee, how did Darth Vader become Darth Vader? I wonder what he was like as a kid!"

I don't want to get all pop psychologist, but I've heard a lot of people make a point that I rather agree with - the OT was Lucas wanting to make a wild space opera, but when he had kids he (for lack of a better word) "felt bad" about basically making Darth Vader "all forgiven" just because he killed the Emperor to save Luke. That all the death and destruction he caused didn't matter because he saved Luke (after bringing him there in the first place).

He didn't like the message that sent once he became a parent. So he told a story that no one really cared about but him - which is great for an art film or something, but I think that's what really disgruntled people.
That's an oft-overlooked point, and one that I agree with. For all of the waffle about Lucas' reliance on CG dulling the characters blah blah, the single biggest change to his entire outlook on life - thus affecting his filmmaking ethos too - came as soon as he kids, which, to be fair to him, it tends to do! As far back as 1982 Lucas was talking about how uncomfortable he was with the level of violence in Star Wars (remember how the blaster hits were censored in the subsequent Special Edition?) and he really did start to make these things from a much younger 'kids eye' view. Hence the need to redeem Vader and even Han Solo, whose infamous neutering in the SE is a direct result of Lucas' mellower outlook, as were the teddy bears in Jedi and the almost unbearably goofy droids and gungans in the prequels.

Sure, there's all that political stuff and Anakin getting flame-broiled and whatnot, which always leads people to question how they can be kids movies after all that, but that stuff was kinda set in stone in Lucas' mind way back when, so he simply shoehorned in all that kiddie-friendly guff around it. I've seen it called an "oil and water" style of filmmaking, and that sums up the wildly uneven prequels to a tee. Only Lucas could've made these glossy, expensive love letters to the serials of his childhood and actually WANT to keep the awful dialogue and dreadfully stiff acting. The only difference is you can't see the strings holding up the ships. (In a way I can't help but admire how much power Lucas had; the prequels are essentially independent 'art' films, only with $100 million dollar budgets!)

The OT is similarly afflicted, don't get me wrongo, but the stories are far more propulsive which doesn't give you too much time to dwell on how crap the dialogue is, and the characters are deliciously snippy and sarcastic, which also helps to paper over the cracks. The sheer class of Messrs. Guinness and Cushing also sells the dialogue in a way that the youngsters can't. With all that in mind, I think JJ will do just fine. His fresh, funky Star Trek films have proved beyond a doubt that he can do Star Wars better than Lucas can, and if they draft in an old hand like Ian McKellen or Derek Jacobi to handle some of the acting chores then I think it'll be just fine.

I just read the book Darth Plagueis, and I have to say it made the prequel trilogy a little better for me. You get to see stuff that the prequels just didn't take the time to show: Count Dooku being manipulated into leaving the Order and starting the separatist movement, Syfo-Dias being manipulated into ordering the clone troopers, the training of Maul, and the reason why Palpatine had multiple apprentices even though the Sith had the Rule of Two. It also cleared up a question I had about whether Count Dooku knew Palpatine was Sidious or not. I almost wish Episode 1 had been a combination of this book and what we got in the film.

I couldn't get through more than a couple of chapters of Plagueis, as I found Luceno's writing style to be an utter chore to read. That said, I did like the bit about Tatooine's suns being so fierce that they age the planet's inhabitants in double-quick time; hence Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru turning from fresh-faced youngsters into haggard old fogies in the space of a mere 19 years.

Random tangent -- I teach high school band, and we have a trumpet player named Luke. Junior, so 16 or 17. One marching rehearsal this season, I noticed he was looking down at the ground instead of keeping his chin up while marching. Told him, "Your eyes can deceive you -- don't trust them," and "Trust your feelings, Luke. Let go, Luke." He didn't give it a second thought. Confused at the lack of reaction, I asked if he got the reference. He said no. I looked around at the rest of the trumpet section, including three seniors, so 17 or 18, and no one got the reference. Told them Star Wars. Everyone basically gave me a, "Oh, I've never seen it." I then looked over at some nearby colleagues, only to see their mouths hanging open in disbelief.

Granted, it's not quite the same. I would HOPE they'd have heard the, "I am your father," line via pop culture over the years and would make the connection if they watched the movie, but I wouldn't bet on it...

That would be pretty funny if FOX re releases the Uncut Star Wars trilogy on the weekend the new movies come out. Theaters would burn down.
