While we're talking about getting the original theatrical cuts of the original trilogy... I would also like to say how much I'd like to get the theatrical cut of Phantom Menace as well. If for no other reason than to have the picture quality improved. The Blu-ray looks pretty good, better than the DVD, but Phantom Menace was filmed on actual film right? And then DNR'd for the Blu-ray to look more like the other prequels, if I'm remembering right.

Id' like the theatrical cut too. Phantom Menace was shot on film, but 99.9999% of it was digitally manipulated so you actually get better quality going straight from the digital files, which is what they did for the Blu-ray. What they also did was to give it to Lowry to work their mojo on it, whereby they degrain, enhance detail then regrain - only someone left out the 'regrain' part, so it looks very smooth and shiny and nothing like film.

I actually watched a regrained version of Phantom Menace the other day, with no other edits or colour correction, just a very light dusting of grain laid over the top and it made all the difference. What looked plasticky and fake now had a semblance of filmic realism, and the grain also had the effect of dithering the EE ever so slightly.

Unaltered original Star Wars Trilogy rumoured to see Blu-ray release

"This morning, a report has surfaced from Bleeding Cool that Disney is not only planning to finally relent to fan demands, but that marketing plans for this are already well in motion."

As I previously said which the article states: "Sooner or later, Disney need to produce a new scan of the original film elements, as the current digital intermediate was produced in 2004 at 2K resolutions - a step down from the 4K and 8K scans of classic films that are commonplace today."

At first I never thought Disney would bother with the OOT but then again they spent $4 billion plus for the franchise and will not want to piss any fans off and want to bleed them dry of their money so I can see them releasing them. Not that I think that there are that many people who would refuse to see the new films or buy the merchandise if they aren't made available but it would be a huge olive branch to the fans. Disney could probably make $4 billion just on releasing Han shooting Greedo first merch.

If doing for the fans opens up a crapload of wallets, they will.

Right, it's such a no-brainer cashgrab that I would bet on it happening.

Good to see some love for Clone Wars here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/67362

AICN usually talk a load of shit but that piece perfectly encapsulates how I feel about CW, in that it greatly expands our understanding of the prequel characters in a way that Lucas was unwilling or simply unable to do across three movies. There was a bit too much of everything in the prequels and I don't think Lucas ever got a handle on it, but the breadth of CW allows for so many of those dangling story points to be addressed.

And the way that S6 informs Ep III and beyond was mind blowing. I mean, I've always liked the show but S6 is some of the greatest Star Wars content ever committed to moving pictures, it's THAT good IMO. Sure, if you hate the prequels then it's not gonna convert you, but if you've got even a passing like for what Lucas was trying to do then it's ESSENTIAL viewing. Forget the 'it's for kids' bullshit, because from the start (okay, maybe the series rather than the movie ) it had a surprisingly grown-up outlook and it's a vital part of the SW Saga for me. I don't think I'll ever be able to do another Saga viewing marathon without fitting in CW S6 between eps II and III.

Yeah. It may be complicated, but I'm sure the first thing 20th Century Fox wants to do after losing the Star Wars franchise to Disney is to prevent themselves from making any more money off of it.

I hope this is true.

Please Disney make this happen and please include the Theatrical Cut of The Phantom Menace along with a new transfer that isn't DNR'ed to death & the '97 Special Editions of the OT whilst you're at it.

They should release the movies also separately. It would be awesome if they used the original movie posters as the Blu-Ray covers.

I doubt they'll bother with the 97 Special Editions. We'll most likely get the theatrical cuts of the original trilogy as well as a re-release of the 2012 blu-ray versions.

Definitely, they look amazing.

The original sound mixes are a must as well as are the original trailers.

Ah well you can't have it all.

I hope that this isn't just a rumour, the Theatrical Cuts are in a desperate need of high quality remastering.

Disney first has to work out a deal with Fox before they release Ep IV. Once thats dealt with, and i can't see why that would be a problem anyway, i have no doubt Disney will deliver the OT in theatrical versions. Disney no doubt is with their Star Wars aquisition.
