I wonder how many people who don't frequent sites like this or Star Wars sites saw the Complete Saga and the Prequel and Original Trilogy sets and bought them thinking they were actually getting the Original Trilogy?

I know my mother bought the stand alone Original Trilogy BD set for me as a gift because she took it at face value and thought it was the actual Original Trilogy since that is what it says on the box. I of course returned it and she totally understood why. She knows of my hatred for the Special Editions.

I'm pretty sure a vast majority of people who have seen Star Wars at all are completely unaware of the changes that George Lucas made. Doesn't make the change right or wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that most people don't know and don't care.

I think these all old losers yelling at Lucas forget that to most of us Star Wars has always been the edited versions and the prequels have always existed (well actually most people my age haven't seen Star Wars).

I don't see the problem with the edits Lucas has made. He's not forcing you to watch the movies and doesn't owe anybody anything. If you saw the movies then you did so out of your own free will.

I don't have any problem with the prequels either. Phantom Menace was the first Star Wars movie I saw and it's still my favorite in the series. I prefer the Prequels in fact. Thematically they are the stronger films. The originals are a simple good vs. evil story. The prequels actually have a significant amount of depth to them and a great deal of basis in history/literature.

The Rise of the Empire is an allegory to the Nazi's and Anakin's fall is an allegory to the biblical story of Lucifer. It's also an allegory to the fall of the Roman Republic and Rise of the Roman Empire. In fact the prequels take a lot from the Roman Republic. Revenge of The Sith is also basically Macbeth. It's also kind of a Greek Tragedy. For such complex films, the hate the prequels is quite honestly baffling.
The prequels are an allegory for crap.

Lucas has been on record that he had more the Vietnam and Nixon/Watergate era in mind while producing both trilogies, In fact as an argument against analysis that he was using the prequel trilogy as an analogy to contemporary events.

He's also been on record as stating that films should be preserved in their original form in order to protect society's intellectual and cultural heritage.

When it comes to things that Lucas has said in the past he is full of more shit than Obi Wan talking to Luke in the Original Star Wars trilogy.

But everything Obi-Wan said was true... from a certain point of view.

I'm just checking because technically the 1997 Special Editions were last released on those formats (original in fall of 1997, and then there was at least one more VHS release somewhere around the year 2000). When the Trilogy came out on DVD in 2004, more changes were made in addition to the ones from 1997. And then in 2011 when the Blu-Ray set was released, even more changes occurred.

I've even seen comments from a few people who never quite understood how those who grew up with the original versions felt until they saw the clip of Vader yelling "No. Noooooo!" in the Blu-Ray version of Return of the Jedi. Then they finally understood the frustration that many of us who grew up on the originals felt.
What's funny, is I fall into both parts of this... I loved the original versions!
I loved the Special Editions (minus Luke's scream in Empire) I liked the changes for the DVD's.
I LOATHE the Blu-Ray's!
I saw Return of the Jedi in a Drive-In. It was my first Star Wars movie.
So, I grew up with the Original Trilogy. I watched each one every day when I was a kid until I was in my teens. I wore out the VHS's a few times.
I also love the Prequel Trilogy.
I saw The Phantom Menace 8 times in the Cinema.

But until the Vader yell in Return of the Jedi, I had no problem with any of the changes to all 6 movies.

As I was saying earlier, I don't have a huge issue with the 1997 SEs other than a couple of things (mostly Jedi Rocks and the Luke's scream), but they still had more of the "essence" of the originals compared to what happened to the Blu-rays. In addition, I have reason to believe the color timing of the 1997 versions much more mirrored the originals. The Blu-ray color timing (although very slightly improved from the 2004 DVDs) is just so far off from the originals and, thus, 1997 versions. I had read in that savingstarwars article Lucas had them color time the 1997s from his personal dye prints of the originals, but this did not happen from the 2004 versions and upward.

Really, that's the only issue you have? What about Lucas screwing with the rules of death?

Anakin reverted to his younger self in death, but Obi-Wan stays an old man?

That was my most hated change made to the 2004 DVDs.

That's correct, apparently the '97 Special Editions look more like the Theatrical Cuts in terms of colour timing.

The movies were completely re-coloured when Lowry did their work on them in 2004.

Lucas deliberately wanted the colour palettes changed.

I'm sorry, not being snide or sarcastic, but... What rules of Death?

Also, the explanation given for Hayden's appearance, while far-fetched is still within the realm of reason.
At least it's better than Marvel's "It's Magick, we don't need to explain it."

The rules set within the reality of a movie. Every movie can set their own rules. For example, in Dragon Ball Z the rules of death are that you turn into a spirit cloud, unless you got permission from King Yemma to keep your body.

In Star Wars, the rules are broken. If they changed BOTH actors, then the rules would be you revert to your younger self. Or if they didn't touch it, then the rule would be you remain the age you were when you died. But they changed one and kept the other, so it makes no sense.

I guess Obi Wan didn't get permission from King Yemma to return to his younger self.

The "rule" is Anakin died when he became Darth Vader hence why his young spirit is there. He "died" in Episode III. The old Anakin unmasked is still just a shell of Darth Vader. It's not that much of a change to rules. It makes far more sense if you watch 1 - 6 in that order, the young Anakin spirit has more of a payoff.

Of course, if you hate the prequels and just want to watch the original trilogy then yeah I can see how that pisses people off.

Nah it's just a stupid change done for the hell of it like the blinking Ewoks which replaces the kind, gentle looking Sebastian Shaw with Mr. Perv Face.
