Has Lucas ever referred to his tampered OT versions as "director's cuts"? If he thinks his changes were so vital that he had to forget the early theatrical versions, why doesn't he ever or fans use the term "director's cut"? Or does he think that the changes were so minor that they dont need to be referred as "director's cut"?

1997 vs 2000 VHS covers: [Show spoiler] Basically it's like 1984, where Lucas is a one-man "Ministry of Truth" trying to send the original version of the films down the "memory hole". |

Oh, I see a NEW discussion is going on here.
![]() ![]() This may surprise some, but I think that it would have been best for everyone, if he had put in more effort to "really" make them they way he wanted them to be. By that, I mean don't just use some test footage of Hayden Christensen for the end of ROTJ, but shoot a scene with him, where he reflects the spiritual level of that character in that particular situation. Also, the new dialogue scene with the emperor should have matched the make up of ROTJ, and not the one of ROTS, since it's much later in the timeline. The song in the middle of ROTJ is also a bit of jarring, since the music should have been composed by John Williams, not by some guy who doesn't appear to have much talent or at least feel for SW. The characters are cool, but the animation is too broad and in your face. The bigger entrance in Jedi doesn't bother me, although it should have been consistent all the way, the same goes for R2 behind the rocks in ANH. Some effects in Mos Eisly are a bit goofy, but it's not a tragedy. He should probably have done without the Jabba scene, although in a way, I understand it is better with it for TPM and ROTJ, but maybe, he could have rewritten the dialogue for Harrison, digitally alter his mouth movement and change the scene altogether. Ideally, it would be best if he had made all the versions available, but they are/were his babies, and I absolutely respect his vision. I am an artist myself, and I wouldn't want ANYBODY forcing me to do it their way either, as that is selling yourself, and that's the worst. Life goes on, however, and the original untouched trilogy is probably best viewed on VHS anyways, since the optical visual effects would be painfully obvious otherwise, and people would complain that that's NOT how they remember seeing them in the theater 60 thousand years ago. |

Well, why agree with you to some extent, the SW movies have a lot of VFX, so it would be all the more noticeable. Just saying.
![]() I wish you could all have your UOT, but destroying everything SW, because you don't is "slightly" extreme and annoying. Just my 2 cents. I guess it's the internet mentality though, but IMHO it doesn't help anyone. |

And who's doing this? People being passionate about the UOT means they hate Star Wars? I'm not seeing it. I love Star Wars and while it's something I have a long-term emotional investment in, there are numerous aspects of the franchise I've had issues with since 97/99/02. In other words there are parts of the franchise I don't like... but I still love Star Wars. Last edited by Thomas Guycott; 06-14-2014 at 10:01 PM. |

I loved the original films that I saw in the theater as a kid, I even love Return Of The Jedi as much as the other two. As a kid I waited for what seemed like forever for the Ewok specials to air on TV and then watched the Droids cartoon when it came on. Had all of the toys, magazines and trading cards. I loved that Star Wars and the films that all of that stuff was based off is what I want. I don't see why there can't be two Star Wars. All of the things released before 1997 and the stuff afterwards. Just give us what we (I) want and we will shut up forever.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how someone could possibly have such a precipitous decline in talent and abilities exhibited to the public eye over time (other than M. Night Shyamalan). And even Shyamalan didn't ruin his couple of early "good" movies (Sixth Sense, Unbreakable) with the same mistaken sensibilities that led to his later failures... Thanks for proving my point. I don't even post in this thread that much. And the episode VII thread? I don't even think I've ever posted there.
