Yup. He got all mad about it (understandably so) and said that in the future he would finance his movies so no studio would take it away from him. Then he became the studio and did exactly that to other filmmakers. Just like Darth Vader becoming that which he wanted to avoid. Oh the irony!

To be fair Lucas did ask for Irvin Kershner's permission to alter TESB, so he had the director's consent when it came to that particular film. Richard Marquand on the other hand passed away ten years before the special editions were released, so one could argue it was disrespectful of Lucas to change ROTJ.

Lucas wrote the story, it was his idea. So yes, it's most definitely His art. Look, if the content fans have to listen to the entitled fans cry for 15 years, you better believe you'll have to listen to "His artwork". The only difference is, most content fans have not lost their minds and use terms like "rape" and "childhood", and any other nonsense like that. ![]() |

I wonder if Irvin Kershner knew his version would disappear forever, or whether he just thought Lucas would make an alternative version.
It's also very disrespectful to the hundreds of VFX artists who can no longer see their original (oscar winning) work. Or actors that are no longer in the movie (like Sebastian Shaw, or Bobba Fett's voice). It's just wrong on so many levels. |

Oh really?
Name one movie as influential as the Star Wars trilogy that was later re-edited and cut and the original cut no longer available. …. Yup, there is NO other. It's not the same if the role was left in the cutting room BEFORE the movie came out and became a cultural phenomenon. |

You miss my point. There is NO movie that has had this happen. Ever. The fact that the movie in question on top of it is such a cultural landmark makes it worse.

Go back, read your post, while subtracting Star Wars Fandom. Then you'll understand what I was saying. Either way it doesn't matter, as Content fan is content, and Entitled Fan will always feel shortchanged. This is nothing new. |

Actually the supposedly sane, content fans are the only ones who keep dragging the rape nonsense around like some kind of chew toy.

So what you are saying is, the writer gets the final say? Since when has that happened in the film industry?? I can name numerous instances of writers being unhappy with the way a film turned out but most of the time they kind of move on with their lives... I certainly am yet to see Quentin Tarantino digitally re-make True Romance or Natural Born Killers If he wasn't happy with the direction of these films, he should have directed them himself. |

rickah88 what are you talking about? Why are you making assumptions about me? I am not a Star Wars fanboy or Entitled Fan. I don't think he raped my childhood. I am a fanatic of film. FILM. Especially culturally significant films. Now maybe this is hard for you to understand, but wanting to see the original version of an oscar winning, milestone film is not entitled. It's historically SANE.
I honestly can't believe anyone in their right mind would think it's entitled to want to see the original version of a movie!! Haha. It's ludicrous!! |

I think it sucks, I really do, but at the end of the day people need to build a bridge over the river of tears and get over it. If you get the edited versions in a set appreciate them for what they are, a work of art. I have seen both versions through out my childhood, edited more so, and I really love them both. When Disney rereleases their films on blu especially the ones from the late 80's to the mid 90's, the opening music cues get ruined. It sucks but it's great we have them on blu. The sense of entitlement over not being able to have something that was seen in theaters way back when is truly disappointing and probably ruins some of the enjoyment for those that don't care and are happy to see such a great series on blu.

You are comparing someone never making the final cut to people being part of a movie for 20 years before having their image/voice removed. Kind of a different plate of spaghetti...
