You didn't read it, did you...
It's just talking about the DeSpecialized version...

I read it and get what Elvis posted. The more stories written on news sites and blogs and not just fan boys *****ing and moaning on message boards about wanting the UOT the better. Bob Iger is not stupid, he has to know that there are fans out there who would buy the UOT. The vox.com article is on the front page of yahoo, aol and other websites so people seem to be clicking on it.

I think you misunderstood what Elvis was trying to say? The more the better? At least that's how I read it.

Trying not to get my hopes up, but if these aren't released later this year I'll be pretty disappointed.

Glad to see this getting more press. And the article is absolutely right. Fans trying to preserve and restore a film shouldn't be a crime. Not when the owners of said film would rather let it rot in some storage facility. You can't create a piece of art with the sort of impact that Star Wars had and then expect people to let it disappear. If the owners won't take the responsibility of saving that historic film someone else will.

I just hope they don't come after Harmy for this. He and those who helped him have done the fan community a great service and asked for no profit in return. They don't deserve jail time or a civil suit for this. Hell, if anything this should get them all jobs in the industry. It's clear that they have talent and restoration companies should be taking them seriously.

It should be a warning that if you don't do it someone else will.

I'd be surprised if they were released this year. I'd expect a few months before "The Force Awakens" comes out

I don't understand your sentence.
You expect the films to come out before Star Wars VII (which is THIS year), and yet you'd be surprised if they were released this year?

My guess is, these would be officially announced at the San Diego Comic Con in July. If not by that time, they are not coming.

No, They're more likely to announce it at the stupidly named May the 4th celebration...

That article is wrong from top to bottom. "I want original Star Wars! Rabble!" is simply not a valid legal, moral or ethical argument. I guarantee you if anyone here spent the time and/or money making a work of art or entertainment they'd want things like copyright and approval over how it was presented.

Furthermore I doubt the author of that article would like it if someone took his article and put it on another website in which he didn't get money from clicks/hits.

Increasingly high-quality home video has created an absurd and unwarranted sense of entitlement in the last couple decades. 100 years ago seeing a play wasn't a lifetime guarantee that you'd have a pristine copy of that play to revisit. 50 years ago watching a movie in a theater wasn't a promise or an implied contract that you'd be able to watch a comparable copy on a home display. Authors and artists freely modified their works, and media that was once widely available became unavailable, whether intentionally withdrawn or quietly dropped from distribution.

The following fact is beyond debate: paying for a movie ticket in 1977 or buying a VHS copy of a movie before 1997 does not put any entity under any obligation to continue to offer that same experience to you later in life. Don't get me wrong, it's nice when they do it. I love releases like Blade Runner and Close Encounters that give viewers their choice of versions, but I'm not naive enough to think I'm owed that choice. If you saw the original unaltered Star Wars in 1977 you got what you paid for.
