Lucas hasn't and that's why it's been bugging people. No one's saying he can't have his "Special Editions". Their argument is that the theatricals should be included as well.

The only reason why it's such a big deal within this case is because of what the Original Trilogy did to the industry...especially the first film.

Now, I'll never watch the theatricals again, after having witnessed the Special Editions. I just prefer those than the theatricals. But, I do think the theatricals should be included...for historical purposes.
This is exactly the point that I have been making. I feel the same way whenever a new release is ONLY released in an alternate cut and ignores the theatrical version entirely. The new version may be "better" but it is still important to showcase the version that people viewed in theaters.

I don't hate the Special Editions. I think for the most part, Empire is actually better and more epic due to the cosmetic changes done to it. I'm not a big fan of the wampa but that's because you never see Luke and the monster together in the same frame. It just feels off.

But to my point, I never said that Lucas doesn't have a right to alter his film, but he shouldn't make it seem like the work that everyone else did on the classic trilogy was awful and shouldn't see the light of day beyond 1997. It is important to see where model and composite effects came from, from a film historian perspective. I don't watch the OOT on DVD (which doesn't cut it due to the non-anamorphic reasons stated earlier) and see the effects as being flawed. I wouldn't want, even if Kubrick was alive to do it, a redone 2001: A Space Odyssey with brand new CGI effects to replace the amazing model work, if the original 2001 would no longer be available on the market.

It's the same argument people made about Fantasia being censored. Even if Walt Disney changed it himself, the film is still censored. I for one love the new Bluray and I understand the reasoning for removing the racist imagery but it is an important piece of film history (even if it is now wildly distasteful).

Off the point, I again would love a Star Wars collection that included ALL releases. Hell, even throw in the cut-down IMAX version of Attack of the Clones. Show me 1997 Jabba in A New Hope as well as the 2004 version. Show the 1997 Empire with the screaming Luke and the old Emperor but all the new effects. From a historical perspective, ALL the released versions are interesting to see what was changed and what was not.

I feel that Lucas needs to embrace his past and not be ashamed of it. I don't care if a Classic Trilogy is released from a cleaned-up (only for scratches and color-timing to the original theatrical release not for any effects tweaks like lightsabers and matte lines) dupe print. I'm sure there's a version out there that was handled better than the first two Godfather films and look what they did with that on Blu!

After all the name-calling has subsided (for now), we all agree that we are fans of the films and some are fans of more than just the newest version. There's no way we can argue the validity of one iteration over another because the argument is absolutely moot. Despite Lucas having authorship of Star Wars and to paraphrase John Lassetter, once a film is released into the world, it is now in the "ownership" of the audience. The audience attaches themselves and their emotions to it and filmmakers need to realize that fact before they become so entranced with what computers can do these days.

It would not surprise me if Lucas did that. Considering he managed to make a really great looking Saturday morning cartoon on a similar budget (from what I heard, could be wrong), a 3-D TV show doesn't sound off for him. Sure it'll look just as awesome as the movies.

The only change I don't like is getting rid of Luke's "You're lucky you don't taste too good" in ESB. Other than that, I enjoy the special editions and believe Greedo shooting first makes Han more bad#$%, a smug, overly-confident son of a &*(^% who gets taken down a peg getting involved with the empire.

Anyone wanting original PLUS also wanting "cleaned up mattes, fixed sabers, 5.1 etc" should be shot.
That'll work, as long as restoring like Apocalypse Now and Wizard of Oz are okay. Although, the version that'll get people shot sounds cool too. Sure that'll get people complaining too.

Like I said previously in the post, that would please. I'd take a loseless soundtrack over lossy, no matter the number. I'd take a mono Dolby Tru HD over a 5.1 Dolby Digital.

I thought Each movie would be 2-discs worth; One for the film, one for the "extras." George will make another Billion either way when they come out & then with the 3D releases next year.
Sorry, but so people dont jump the gun, 1130pst is 230est, 3hr difference west coast to east coast.

And, maybe I have these and didnt realize it, but the original trilogy hit DVD? When, as part of that release in the early 2000's? I thought that was just the 1997 Special Editions, and you could watch the SpEd or the even more updated SpEd with newer graphics and stuff- like Greedo shooting first, then it became Han and Greedo trading fire.

In 2006, they were released as bonus features to the 2004 Special Editions. They were released as a Limited Edition but are still widely available nearly 5 years later.

Amazon sells them for $15 each. They aren't atrocious but the Classic Trilogy is not presented in 16:9 but instead as a letterboxed 4:3 making the subtitles not visible when stretching and zooming in the image on a HDTV.

EDIT: These are also available in the Star Wars Trilogy boxset that was released in 2008. Amazon has them for less than $23.

Thanks man- I remember that now. And I am pretty sure I decided to hold out hope that they would come out eventually in a better format and not 4x3.
Didnt want to double dip on a set I basically already had.

This link has a couple of minor confirmations and updates to go along with what we are expecting. No specifics though.

The CES Card that seems to be floating about the web seems to state the Anouncement is "impressive" However impressive to me equals the original cuts of the classic series and the 1997 Special Edition Cuts (which I prefer than the most recent DVD versions)

If all we get are more changes and no originals in better transfers this announcement will only be ok... yet we will still buy the set.

I'd rather pay a lot of money for all the cuts of the original series myself.

I just know when the set gets released I can already see Best Buy midnite store openings this fall.

As the announcement is in Vegas, maybe they'll be inserting various cameos into the film: Wayne Newton as a senator, A bunch of "Elvises" in the Mos Eisley Cantine...maybe the holiday special in glorious 1080p....
You never know with GL!

yep- i am guessing retail should be 150 (25 a flick) and sale price will be 89.99 or 99.99. I already am planning (which I never have done) since it will be after my busy season at work, to take off that day. Go buy it at midnight, get up early the next day so I have a solid uninterrupted 12 hrs after my kids go to school, and start watching the movies at 8am. I know i'll skip alot of AOTC and ROTS in terms of the Anakin / Padame crap.

Here's an idea (although not possible in a single day)-
1. Watch TPM and AOTC
2. Watch the Clone Wars Cartoon Series Seasons ( i am guessing there will be 3 of them available on BRD by then)
Season 1 = 503 mins = 8.5 hrs Season 2 = 484 mins = 8hrs
3. Watch ROTS
4. Watch the Original Trilogy

So this would have to be a 3 day event for me:

Day 1- Watch TPM, AOTC, Season 1 of Clone Wars = 12 hrs
Day 2- Watch Season 2 and most of Season 3 of Clone Wars
Day 3- Watch remaining Season 3 Episodes, ROTS, then OT

I see you're assuming the kids will be in school and not on break..... so what is the current "best guess" for an approximate release date for these???

I still have concerns that we won't see these on shelves in 2011
