It would also be smart to wait until there's a lull in new product, as that's the time they're likely to make more money from a release of the UOT. Regardless of how much outcry there is for them, the money they'll bring in is nothing compared to what Disney will initially make from new product. Any release of the UOT that arrived in the middle of this groundswell of new stuff would get lost in the shuffle and undersell. Wait until it can be the focus of the marketing push, rather than what the vast majority of consumers will view as another box of repackaged oldies.

But considering how much new content Disney will be creating with these new movies at the time table they've set forth, when are the theatrical cuts not going to get lost in the wake of new Star Wars content?

Between new tv shows, new movies, new video games, new comics/books...I don't see where the theatrical cuts could be the sole focus. They'll always be up against new Star Wars content at the rate that Disney wants to milk this IP.

Of course there's not going to be a complete dearth of new content at any point in the near future, but you have to figure that at some point in the next six years or so (at some point after the release of the third standalone) there's going to a relative quiet. Right now they're insanely focused on getting everything up and going, so even a year when there's just a TV show or two as opposed to a TV show, a new movie, and a whole slew of books will look like a lull. That's a point where you could safely switch some of the hype away from the new.

I am so excited that we are finally going to be getting the UOT on Blu Ray! I tend to agree with Terminated (and his inside contacts) I think we are in for a big suprise.

Does anyone in this forum actually prefer the 4K restoration to be based on the 2011 cuts?
Yeah me. I'll be pretty angry if I don't get a 4k restoration after all the money I've put into these movies.

The surprise (to you, at least) is the UOT has NOT been officially announced on any format; it's still just a rumor.

Default Digital release on 4-10-15...

With the upcoming digital release, is anyone else expecting a sale on any of the box sets? That, OR a pairing up with BD/Ultraviolet promo?

There's gonna be an inevitable mini-lull after Episode IX and all we're left with are spin-offs. Wouldn't surprise me to see the UOT (and even unaltered prequels) finally be released as part of a mega box set of Episodes I-IX (the new complete saga ultimate collector's edition with real carbonite in each box).

Does Disney even do major box sets? The Phase One MCU box set is the only one I can think of and it's still too expensive.

I think they'll remain separate and not affect each other. I am worried about the digital copies putting a hold on Disney releasing physical copies of the movies, even if it's for a short time. Whether they've thought they can make a few bucks on digital copies for 12 months before releasing their own sets, I'm not sure.

Didn't they also do ones for the Toy Story and PotC trilogies (off the top of my head)? Even if they don't do one massive set for all 9 movies, three separate boxes for each trilogy are certainly possible. Disney will just need to work out the A New Hope rights issues with Fox. I think Disney gets the rights for 1-3 and 5-6 in 2020 which would be about the time the new trilogy wraps up anyway (I think?).

I think Disney will try and maximize income and release separate special editions. I doubt we'll see box sets for a while, unless it's some kind of limited edition set!

Would that be an explosive, ionized gas, or an online backup subscription?
