Some people are just way too overly sensitive these days. I wonder if that dad has a problem with his kid going to the local swimming pool or the beach. Literally every woman there is dressed just like that.

The angle icon shows up on my player whenever there's an alternative video for that sequence. The Star Trek TOS discs do that whenever there's a big VFX shot coming up and I've had a few DVDs that did that during main titles for languages (namely the first Shrek film).

It seems likely. Shame it will probably be the 9-disc set in new packaging (even if the 2006 OOT DVD discs were included as a special bonus we'd be lucky).

Just a thought: If the original theatrical trilogy (unaltered) blu-ray was announced before the release of The Force Awakens do you think that would steal /steal some of the enthusiasm for the new film or just roll right into it to make the new film one giant juggernaut?
I am not sure if it would hurt or help; but it certainly would be a focus of exposure. Or, over-exposure. |

I have a friend who is in her 50's with a young teen daughter who knew nothing about Star Wars. The mom had seen the originals and loved them when they came out, like most people, but honestly, a year ago, she would have had a hard time having a discussion about Star Wars without getting it confused with Star Trek. She didn't watch "space movies" in general anyway. Then she heard me talking about the new film a few months ago, and the idea of Episode VII really set her off - she's since shown all six original films to her daughter (in the proper OT/PT order!), they are now watching Rebels, and we talk about it quite often. The other day she passed on a question to me from her daughter about how lightsaber colors get picked...the daughter is now in love with Wookiepedia. Again, this is someone that six months, a year ago if I had said "Kirk" she would have gone, "That's Star Trek, not Star Wars, right?" And yet, after her first re-visit to the OT, immediately the next day asked me about the changes. And she hadn't seen the films in their entirety since the 1980's. So yeah, the fact they have had such changes has certainly not been lost on the general public. Even if they can't pinpoint it all, they can tell. They know it's there (it's hard not to, because so much of the CGI, particularly in ANH, is so out of place). If even people like her notice and kind of scrunch their noses at it, when you add in all the lapsed/returning major Star Wars fans in, all people will need to do is see a box that says "ORIGINAL, UNALTERED CUTS!" on it and it would be the best selling Blu-ray of the year. Especially this holiday season, ESPECIALLY with TFA coming and the entire marketing push being "We are going back to the 1970's/1980's again". That's why I just don't see Disney not doing it. I just can't see it. They'd be throwing away untold millions. Even people that couldn't verbalize what has changed would be all over it just by the description. It would be printing (very large amounts) of money. |

Even people who were not aware of that changes had been made would be by a good ad campaign. They would get the people who already bought the Complete Saga, people who refused to buy the Complete Saga and the new people who just didn't buy it the first time on BD.
Still think the best thing would be a box set with the prequels, special editions and UOT. Put it out when the trailers start hitting TV for The Force Awakens. Something like "and be sure to pick up Star Wars on blu-ray and DVD before The Force Awakens" at the end of the trailer. |

I watched A New Hope on Saturday. It's the first time I've watched the Blu on my front projector (other than a couple of very brief clips) and mediocre PQ just stood out even further to me. I guess I've been watching too many quality catalog titles lately which makes it stand out even worse. On any rate, I noticed something even stranger regarding the frozen grain issues: it's like there are two layers of grain. There is a frozen layer and there is a moving layer of grain that seems as if it's behind the frozen layer - again both seen simultaneously. It really stood out weird and mostly on Tatooine. The Lowry process was very poor at that time.

Yep, when Threepio is shuffling across the desert he's dragging his own forcefield of grain with him. To be fair to the Lowry guys the Star Wars DVDs were the very definition of a rush job, I think they only had three months from start to finish to remaster all three films and they weren't working from fancy scans but HD telecines. (Compare that to their work on Bond from the same period, working from 4K scans of negatives.) During post on Sith Lucas decided that the time was right to release the movies on DVD but he wanted them out before the new movie, which put a lot more pressure on the project and resulted in the unashamedly half-assed versions we got on DVD and latterly on Blu-ray.

How so? They didn't go up in a puff of smoke minutes after Lowry got done with them, the 1997 photochemical restoration (only 7 years prior at that stage) was meant to have saved the films. If anything the "exponential degradation" should've meant a much more in-depth restoration in 2004 but it was a bodge job designed to meet a rushed release date, pure and simple.
