Doesn't mean that there wasn't CG used to extend/change the background, paint something out, split-screen the take with another one or whatever. Not every bit of CG tweakery has to be a massive in-your-face digital effect.

There are closeups of Anakin that don't appear to have any manipulation at all.

Maybe they removed pimples or something.

Yeah there are plenty of scenes on Tattooine, especially in the Skywalker home, that don't appear to have any CGI or digital manipulation, but apparently do. I'd still like to know exactly which shots of Phantom Menace were done on video instead of film; maybe the DNR is supposed to make it impossible for anyone to ever know

This is also noted in the commentary, I think. They did some of the pickups with the Sony cameras, chiefly the night-time scene with Anakin and Qui-Gon looking up to the stars.

Hmm, interesting, thanks. I'll have to rewatch soon, been meaning to anyway. I remember Lucas daring people to guess which shots weren't on film, had no idea he finally just gave it away.

If 20th Century Fox owned Star Wars then Disney wouldn't be making The Force Awakens without huge concessions to Fox. Fox would also be in the position to do a Never Say Never Again and make their own movies. They can't because they don't have ownership rights to the movie or the characters within that motion picture.

The image of the blu-ray is so scrubbed with DNR that it's impossible to find one shot that looks like it was actually shot on film.

If that was how Phantom Menace 3D looked in theaters, I feel bad for all those that went and saw it. Even in 3D with glasses on it would have been hard to enjoy on large format screens.

I did see Phantom Menace 3D theatrically, and noticed the DNR but it didn't bother me as much as the Blu-ray does. I do still hope we get a 3D Blu-ray of it. But I'd rather have a properly non-DNR'd version of the 2D. And of course, neither is likely to happen anytime soon.

Aside from one or two shots, TPM on Blu-ray looks fantastic, a quantum leap over the DVD. It looked lovely projected theatrically.

Is this right?

I haven't seen TPM in 10 years and it was never on a high res format so I never did manage to tell. I always thought it was just the little inserts shot on the Sony cameras (e.g. extras/Warwick Davis at the pod race).

Maybe I'm being a cheapskate, but I need this to be less than $80 (or $79.99, usually the lowest sale price I see).... since it's not the original original trilogy I'm kinda hmm about the package, even though I love Star Wars. Are the special features really exceptional?

I read that back in 99 that the Qui-Gon/Anakin scene was filmed digitally. I could kind of tell when I saw it in theaters. The blacks were especially inky and deep and it had a smoother look than the rest of the film.

I saw it theatrically too, and the DNR didn't bother me too much either but it's really apparent on the Blu-ray. What bothered me more was that the cinema showing was cropped, I think they did it to embiggen the picture.

If fantastic you mean waxy, overly smooth and artificial, then yes. Fantastic.

My comment was that there isn't a frame on the blu-ray that resembles film. Therefore discerning between content shot on 35mm film and digital Sony cameras would be next to impossible since fine detail and grain were completely scrubbed from the image.

The cropping I never noticed. TBH I never even knew/noticed the DVD was cropped until reviews of the Blu-ray came out

It looks as intended - vivid, bright, and colorful, far superior to the DVD and probably the original theatrical run, which I always found to be a bit dull compared to AOTC and ROTS.

Clearly, this was the intention. Lucas wanted Episodes 1-3 to have a consistent look and he finally achieved that with the TPM Blu-ray and 3D release.

Nope.
[Show spoiler]

TPM is rather subpar, not the worst but not commendable either, and defending it is odd. In regards to sound that is good.

It's the worst-looking movie of the bunch, but I agree that it's the best it has ever looked.
