Too bad Disney has nothing to do with the restoration/remastering department at Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm, like Dreamworks and Marvel, has autonomy from Disney. They do their thing and all Disney can do is say "Nope. Goes against our brand, find another distributor for this film/we're not including this extra."

If Lucasfilm were to release the unaltered originals, one would hope like any competent true restoration (assuming a true restoration is needed; I know they did restoration work in 1997) they would resort to sources which would be used to capture the original color timing, densities, shadows, etc. It would be great if someone like Robert Harris consulted them. I'm not sure if the 1997 SE prints resemble the poor color of the 2004 master we are seeing or not.

Does any of these editions include digital copies? Might just get the upcoming Saga release or the steelbooks. I share digital copies with family so it would be nice if it did.

Nope.

Digital copies are a shared release with Fox, Lucasfilm, and Disney.

Blu-ray sets are a shared release with Fox and Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm has exactly as much autonomy as Disney decides to give them. And they can change their minds at the drop of a hat. Because they own them outright, lock stock and barrel.

The 1997 version of Star Wars was timed using Lucas' personal IB Tech print of the original as reference, so it should've been pretty close. What they did on the Blu-rays was the result of a few digital colourists being let loose on it. "Let's turn up the blue, that's a good trick!"

I'm pretty sure I saw them back in '97, I don't remember any details but they didn't look bad for sure. Frankly I'm not sure they looked any different than any other movie I might have seen the week before or after.

Ah, very interesting on the '97 versions.

It's a damn shame what they did with the Blus (or more appropriately, what they didn't do!).

The 2004 remasters of the OT (re-employed for the Blus) really were a last-minute bodge job as far as such remasters go. Lucas decided on a whim to do them during post on Sith but he also wanted them out before that movie was to be released, so LFL, Lowry etc had to work on a ridiculously shortened schedule to get it all done (I heard three months, could be wrong) while the A-team of mixers, colourists etc were busy working on the new movie.

It never got the attention it deserved - as proved by the ****ed up sound mix for Ep IV and the bizarre blue fringing because they pushed the saturation too much - and while certain of those things were corrected for Blu, we still had the same frozen Lowry grain lying in wait along with even more utterly pointless changes to the movies. Mind them rocks Artoo!

It's hard to comprehend how something as huge as the original Star Wars has been so half-assed STILL after all of these years. I mean we've seen how many "small" titles get great remaster treatment and here we are with nearly 12 year masters mucked from here to The Death Star.

Well, even if we don't get the original originals we know for sure that Lowry/Reliance did a 4K restoration - the good kind of Lowry restoration - on the OT so we will get some new transfers for sure. The only question is when, 2017 looks the safest bet.

Watch us get "40th anniversary editions"... and they turn out to be the same old discs repackaged.

Nah, J/K, this isn't Universal.

I would re-buy the Original Saga on Blu-ray if they released a bonus disc with all 35 Episodes of Ewoks and all 13 episodes of Droids in SD with the 2 Ewok TV movies in HD. Now that would warrant a Double Dip
