True, although Lucasfilm's Archives are likely separate from the Walt Disney Archives (as Pixar still has its own Archives staff and collection), I'm sure the Walt Disney Archives is making sure the Lucasfilm Archives is running well (just as the Disney Archives works with its counterparts at Pixar). And it appears that Lucasfilm Archives have been well maintained prior to the Disney purchase.

Not trying to argue with you but I have a hard time believing that George Lucas gave all his negatives to Disney, all deals aside. What filmmaker that owns his own work does that? If he did then I guess Disney needs to get on the ball and release the OT unaltered. There seems to be a lot of heresay regarding the Lucasfilm deal. Technically, the negatives and all were stored at the ranch where Lucas still lives. So did he pull a Kubrick and box up all his possessions and send them to Disney. Now granted Disney probably has the materials but I doubt that Lucas doesn't still have them himself as well. Who knows? It just seems weird that a person would hand over their lifes work to a huge corporation. Whatever. Honestly, I just want to see the movies I grew up with again in good condition. If it doesn't happen I guess I've already gotten over that.

You're right I didn't think that through, the ages wouldn't sync-up. Luke finding a holographic recording in Obi-Wan's Tatooine sand hut would be more appropriate as it would at least introduce the face we see at the end of Jedi.

Although saying that the prequels and Clone Wars 'Last Crusaded' the whole thing in the end anyway!

Listen Rister, we're already deep into this war of made up sayings but if you want to pull out now I totally understand. Your sayings are pretty good but it's obvious mine are the cat's vagina.

Um...someone selling his work?

LucasFilm is running their own show, Kennedy reports to Horn. When LucasFilm wants to release the UOT, they will.

Like Spielberg, and Disney, Lucas had all of his material in climate-controlled supervised locations. The Library of Congress currently supervises the Disney Archives going back to the 20's.

So we could get Song of the South, but it's not likely in this PC age. Still, they are sitting on plenty of live action titles and a few animated as well.

OK, I'm probably asking for it here but one more conjecture. After doing a bit of online research all I can conclude is that Disney owns the brands which allows them to make further films in most of the Lucasfilm franchises. It says that they now own the tech as well which would mean that they own the business. It's like when one major corporation buys out another. They technically own it all but that doesn't mean they have all the materials necessary to do whatever they want with the previous Star Wars entries. This is all numbers on paper not really truckloads of negatives delivered to a CEO's door. The proof will be if we ever do get the unaltered OT from Disney but so far that remains to be seen. I'd love a documentary on this whole process but it's all insider money stuff that we will never really be privy to.

That's generally what happens when you sell the company you founded. It would be extremely unlikely there'd be a 'George Lucas retains ownership of the negatives' clause in the contract of sale.

Disney embarked on a 4k capture of their animation archive several years ago, they're still maintaining the negatives for as long as they can.

They maintain their live-action library, too...Pollyanna and Swiss Family Robinson are GORGEOUS on Blu-Ray. Can't wait for Treasure Island (it's in the mail), to say nothing of 20,000 Leagues and Darby O'Gill. Also hoping for a remaster for Third Man on the Mountain.

Oh...the spit-and-polish restoration of The Three Caballeros? Also GORGEOUS. Aired on Turner a few months back, it's gonna be smashing on Blu-Ray.

You are correct but we are also talking intellectual properties and that is where it get confusing. All business details belong to Disney now. No doubt there but do they have the right to do whatever they want with the existing Star Wars films. I guess this where we are all in the dark. this information seems to not be public at this time.

Krug, anything Lucas produced under the banner of LucasFilm belongs to LucasFilm. He sold LucasFilm -- which shocked everybody -- but that sale wasn't oblique, we aren't all in the dark. Some are still in denial, and this happened three years ago.

Here's a quick flowchart, let's see if this sticks:

LucasFilm owns everything LucasFilm produced. Models, props, loops of film. Everything.
\ /
George Lucas is a diabetic and didn't feel up to making three more Star Wars films. George Lucas decided to retire, but wanted to pass the legacy on.
\ /
George Lucas was impressed with Bob Iger, and how Iger left Marvel and Pixar alone.
\ /
George Lucas felt comfortable selling LucasFilm to Disney under Iger, with Kathleen Kennedy taking over supervision of LucasFilm.
\ /
LucasFilm owns all the negatives and versions of the Star Wars films.
\ /
Disney is the Corporate Parent of LucasFilm, but they leave Pixar, Marvel, and LucasFilm alone to do their thing.

We good now?
