You should see how brutal the comment section is in this IGN article. Not many people are willing to forgive George Lucas:

I just took a glance and he has many defenders in those comments. I think you're viewing those comments through the filter of your own biases.

But even if they were 100% negative, so what? People on these sites bash everything as a matter of course. My bet is that many of the same people who bash him online anonymously collect Star Wars toys based on the prequels and would kiss his feet if they ever met him in person.

If someone is a jerk who has never accomplished anything in their life, it makes them feel good to bash George Lucas (or Ridley Scott or David Fincher or whoever you want to name). Lucas certainly has his faults and the films are filled with problems, but he doesn't deserve all the bashing he's received. It's become a silly game with a mob mentality. Everyone decides to jump on the same bandwagon.

Not that anyone would actually want Lucas to direct another Star Wars film, but I don't blame him for not wanting to. He's right: it's not worth all the absurd criticism. I can't even imagine how nasty the bashing would be if Lucas was a female.

Don't rule it out. Just depends on how bad he wants to add an Espy award to his trophy shelf.

I dunno, he loves adding stuff but he's never been a big fan of cutting.

Oh come on. Lucas is telling everyone that the best character in the franchise is Jar Jar Binks. That's a quality troll, right there. The responses are a forgone conclusion after that monster bait.

I also liked that he hopes Disney won't muddle the Force into a bunch of gobbledygook.

Methinks that single-celled ship sailed quite some time ago.

Clearly, that was his point. But all the trolls on that site clearly have no idea what irony is.

I haven't been able to see any of the comments so I can't speak to that but did that line really come across as obvious self-deprecating humor?

Basically all I've been able to see are the first couple paragraphs of the story.

For all I know, the whole article is a spoof.

For all we know he might have been serious about it. After all, he once said during the pre-production for Ep. 1 that Jar Jar was the key to everything and that he's the funniest character that's ever been featured in Star Wars.

The article's based off of a couple of minutes of time he gave to Vanity Fair so it's the usual 'mountain out of a molehill' kinda situation. While I do think he was trolling - epically - with the Jar Jar response there's always a grain of truth to what he says because he followed it up with (paraphrasing) "people just want the same thing, I tried to do something different with Star Wars and got crucified for it". He's still smarting about the fanboy reaction to the prequels so he definitely made sure to get a couple of digs in with that video.

People wanted "more of the same" in that they wanted entertaining Star Wars films with compelling scenarios, interesting characters and at least serviceable screenwriting.

Instead, they got the prequels loaded with gems such as "C-SPAN of the Old Republic" and Jar-Jar Binks. Toss in the worst-written "romance" this side of Twilight along with the rest of Emo Anakin's characterization, and it's a slam dunk as to why the PTs are as reviled as they are.

I like a fair few things about the prequels (well, mostly Sith and the Clone Wars show) but yeah, I had pretty much the same reaction as you to that comment from Lucas: whatever people were expecting, it certainly wasn't a rastafari frog man stepping in poodoo while animals fart in his face.

Lucas has treated his fans like sh*t for years now, so it's no surprise.

Worse, he hears the fart and then sniffs, as if to make certain that it was really a fart as opposed to something that coincidentally sounded like a fart.

Jar Jar intentionally smells the farts of space camels.

Absolutely true, other problems with the trilogy aside. Lucas can't be blamed for the childish overreaction on the part of knownothings who claim to like science fiction but find themselves threatened by new concepts. As far as people wanting the same thing, that's what Disney's giving them.

I watched Episodes I & II today for the first time in probably at least 8 years and wow..... I forgot how cringe-inducing parts of them are. Everything from the story, the poor dialogue, the wooden acting, even the already dated CGI... It's all so disappointing. I'm not saying IV - VI have Oscar worthy acting, but at least a lot of the visuals still hold up and come off as authentic.

There are parts that are good, but not great.

I've gone through the prequels recently for the first time in 10 years and more and here's what I'd call out as the better parts:

Episode I:
Qui-Gon/Obi Wan rapport
Qui-Gon/Obi Wan vs Darth Maul

Episode II:
Obi Wan performance

Episode III:
Order 66

These are not good movies.

Are Ewan's Obi-Wan reshoots as jarringly noticeable to anyone else? The wig in TPM and his wig and fake beard in AOTC? It was bad in TPM and I couldn't believe it ended up even worse in AOTC. That was something that really hurt the quality of the prequels that's never much mentioned. Really stands out to me from shot to shot.

That's largely overlooked because Ewan McGregor's actual performance as Obi-Wan is one of the very few things in the PT that doesn't outright suck.

Yeah, I like Ewan as Obi-Wan. But man, those reshoots. The guy who apologizes to Qui-Gon when they go back to Naboo, and who approaches Anakin outside the Outlander club, "This weapon is your life", doesn't even much look like him.
