I'm usually very "your opinion is your own and that's cool" but you guys have gotta be drunk. Aotc is completely unwatchable and TPM is one of the worst movies ever. Rots is... Ok. But gets way more wrong than right. Did it have some good ideas? Yes. But so did Jurassic park 3. But it still sucked. I feel like people who believe this became fans in the late 90s. TFA IS a reboot. But it's made from unrebootable franchise. TFA had to happen just so people could care about these movies agian. Now that TFA did it's job, freedom of creativity is abundant..

That's a great way of putting it as the movie is a very competent space opera otherwise, but the problems that I do have with it distract me so much that I just can't enjoy the film on the same level that the rest of the world seemingly does. As you say, perhaps it can't even be properly evaluated story-wise until next December.

And what happens if its the same all over again and we have to wait until "episode" 9?

That's kinda what I'm dreading and why I'm b*tching about TFA so much. They've basically treated TFA like a middle-of-the-trilogy movie anyway, so if the actual film in the middle of the trilogy just poses lots more questions and offers no answers then my head may well explode, Scanners-style. At least I'd stop moaning about it though, there's always a silver lining.

I'm optimistic about Episode VIII, but yeah, if it's another two-hour mystery box then my annoyances with TFA will graduate to anger. After anger, there is apathy, and I REALLY don't wanna be apathetic about Star Wars. "Annoyance leads to anger, anger leads to apathy, apathy... leads to suffering."

Flash Gordon. That's all I gotta say. Okay, it's not ALL, I guess:

This whole saga started with Lucas wanting to make a mash-up of Flash Gordon serials and Kurosawa samurai. Even the opening crawl is an homage (steal?) from the third Flash Gordon serial -- "Flash Gordon Conquers the Universe" -- from 1940. The zany and often annoying antics of Artoo/Threepio or Jar Jar Binks are homages to the peasant characters in Kurosawa flicks like "Hidden Fortress" and "Seven Samurai", who are supposed to serve as the eyes of the audience as we tag along with the larger-than-life samurai (Jedi). Even the "boxcar" style of story-telling (first we have the escape from the Trade Federation Ship, then the underwater adventure with Gungans and strange creatures, then the escape from Naboo to Tatooine, then the Pod Race, etc...); it's absolutely an homage to the Flash Gordon serialized shenanigans.

My point is this: I think we ask too much of these movies. In the spirit they were created, I think they ALL succeed very well. I absolutely hated the prequels for many years, and then I simply "lightened up"; went over to the "light" side of the Force. And I love TFA because the new "lighter" me is simply entertained and dazzled by the continued serial adventures of our beloved universe.

To sum up and put it frankly: this ain't Shakespeare (despite moments of true greatness that aspire to that level)... this is Flash Gordon.

Anyhoo... I'm not entirely sure what I'm trying to say, LOL. I'm definitely not trying to convince anyone of anything; I'm just puttin' down some rambling thoughts. People like what they like, and all opinions are 100% valid. I'm just glad I personally found "peace" with all of it. I love the hell out of this universe.

Love what you say here and agree. I could personally care less who likes what, but cup-half-empty folks who come across like ill-tempered know-it-alls are unfortunately always the loudest people. They also seem to be the most easily offended and at the same time claim people should learn to take a joke when they turn insulting. Go figure.

TFA is the only commercially available Star Wars film that I'm not annoyed with. The ones I'm most annoyed with are the original trilogy since they've never been released in their original form in good quality. If they never get released, it'll be hard for me to care at all what they do with Star Wars. The series doesn't really even exist for me at this point.

Fair enough. I make do with those LE DVDs, they're crap but they're better than nothing. There are those Despecialized versions, but I don't really have any interest in downloading those.

Oh man. Those despecialized editions are fairly easily obtained and they really are worth it.

Yeah I have those DVDs as well. I have the Despecialized ones but it's hard for me to really enjoy them knowing they're not official releases. There's also the Silver Screen Edition of just the first film. I think it's a restored film print, but still not an official release.

In terms of being annoyed with the viewing experience, for me that would have to go to Attack of the Clones. Even the title is strange to me, because if you've never seen the movie, the title sounds like there's a bunch of clones attacking the good guys, when it's the other way around. And the whole clone thing seems stupid and boring to me, yet it's basically the main plot point of the movie. It also doesn't make sense to me. Why would Yoda want a bunch of clones he knows nothing about to help them out?

But anyway, I agree with what steel_breeze said, but it's hard for me to feel delighted if I can't watch the originals without all the CGI.

I've watched the despecialized editions once (am I allowed to say that on here?) and I was really impressed with the results even though the very problematic Lowry masters were used for the most part.

With that being said though I'm perfectly content with my LE DVD's for the time being. The quality is s**t but at least we officially have the theatrical cuts in some shape or form on a digital format. It's better than nothing. Plus they look nice on my shelf alongside my prequel DVD's.

Yeah, they're the best versions available. I just pretend the CGI versions never happened and the despecialized ones are what was released.

Pretty much exactly how I feel.

The title was meant to be a play on the old B-movies/serialized adventure titles of Lucas' youth. Not really a huge deal, although you're right that the whole clone army thing never really made much sense until it was clarified with the last few episodes of Clone Wars.

I just wish the subtitles on those DVDs were on the actual image and not below it, because if you zoom in on the picture to fill your screen, you can't read them!
