They need to skip BD and make perfect masters and toss them on UHD only, that will help cement that format.

Indy, BttF, Star Wars and Star Trek are the biggest sellers.
They put those on UHD, it is guaranteed to sell systems!

Aside from getting the unaltered originals, the current BDs look worse all of the time given the great remasters and restorations that have taken place the last five years and earlier. Not to mention, display technology (both flat panel and front projection) has improved tremendously since 2011 further highlighting how flawed these masters really are. They really blow.

I remember this too. I think I had my dad buy me the VHS tapes around this time and I remember thinking there's no way this is the last time the originals will be available. lol

If they released the originals on Blu-ray next year, do you think we'd get the Fox logo at the beginning with the fanfare? Without that it wouldn't feel complete to me!

They don't give a damn about the format. It's all about the $$$, which is why they'll definitely be on BD, DVD and Digital if it ever happens. Gotta hit all consumer audiences.

In 1996 I made a 90+ minute version of Empire with my action figures, after being inspired by my friend who did a short version. I got most of the shots in there, but for the asteroid field chase Leia just said, "I have to close my eyes!" Then a cut, then "Whew! That was close! I'm glad you found a safe spot inside this asteroid!" Thinking back now, I should have just gone to the store and bought a sack of potatoes!

Yes, because [drum roll please............] Fox still own the Blu-ray/DVD/theatrical distribution rights to all six pre-buyout films, as per their current agreement with Lucasfilm Ltd which doesn't expire until May 2020.

Exactly, it's just too perfect to pass up. I dunno if we'll get the Blus in May though, they'd be mad not to do some sort of limited theatrical re-release for the actual anniversary (edit: with an Ep VIII teaser attached) and then release the home video versions nearer to the holiday season to really get everyone amped up even more for Ep VIII.

Not a bad idea - Rogue One BD release and announcement at 40th for Fall release of OOT.

Plus I would think most people didn't think of video formats beyond VHS (or laserdisc if you had it) so the statement really didn't mean anything at the time. That's my experience with that release anyway.

Not to mention that none of us really knew the connotations of "original version" either. I can't imagine how my younger self would react if I went back and was all like "Hey hes going to add a bunch of mostly bad extra CGI effects to the films, and re-edit stuff and make them worse. Also, you're going to dislike the Prequel films about Anakin, and hes going to re-edit the films again to add stuff from that that you don't like. And you'll have to watch them that way because the newer video formats that become standard won't have the original versions."

A few things wrong with that... well, One thing wrong, the oter just a different interpretation...
Padme' took Anakin to Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan
Padme' pitied Anakin for the loss of his mother and during his venting.

Every time I think about picking it up again I'm reminded of the hyper-unnecessary additions to Eps IV and VI plus the DNR of Ep I and the useless little micro-editing changes in Ep II.

With that in mind I'd buy the Complete Saga set again but for no more than 20 sovs.

Star Trek '09 for me. Hell, that opening scene alone is the best thing JJ's ever done.

We all know that you can always find flaws, in anything, if you look hard enough. I tend not to over analyze and it's saved me a lot of grief over the years. I also don't place SW on this divine alter that some folks seem to do. They are among my favorite films, but at the end of the day they are just that: very good films.
But everyone has their particular view on things.
But you don't have to "over-analyze" the PT to realize they aren't a fraction of what the OT was. You just have to watch, then think a little. I mean they came out 20 years later, so Lucas wasn't the same, the viewers weren't the same, I wasn't the same, etc., I understand all that.

But many people were extremely disappointed by them, and you can't just dismiss those views by saying people are over-analyzing, nit-picking, looking for flaws, looking for reasons to hate them, and so forth. We all wanted them to be as fantastic as the originals. If you enjoy them, great - but don't belittle the people who don't because you choose to shut off your brain while watching them.

Interestingly, the newly announced Rogue One Blu-rays include the 3D version in the initial wave of releases, unlike TFA which split it off into a later release. Could this be because they have something else in mind for around this time next year? Let's hope so.

Re: the OOT BD releases we all want to happen. Not gonna lie - I kind hope they have the same deluxe packaging as the 3D release of TFA. Now THAT would look pretty snazzy on the shelf - all those individual releases, and just with the Star Wars: Title of Episode moniker, without the "Episode ##" trope. And instead of including a 3D version it can include both the OOT and the 2011 SE versions.

Hell, I'd even rebuy the PT in those packages, provided they include the 3D conversions and drop the "Episode ##" aspect.

That's a great idea, and I've said it before that they can use the original originals and the 3D PT as the 'bonus presentations" to get us to buy the same old 2011 Blu-rays over again.

What would push me over the edge is a proper bonus disc for each movie which, in the case of the prequels, would include all the material from their respective DVDs (upgraded to HD where possible e.g. trailers and deleted scenes) and the extra stuff from the PT 'Saga' bonus disc divvied up accordingly. For the OT it'd be a bit more tricky as Empire of Dreams is one big documentary, unless they were to go back and re-edit it into three separate docs and attach the relevant vintage docs & trailers to each disc.

Come on LFL, you know it makes sense....

Super 8 for me as well, I think it's his most complete film and it's just really charming and a worthy love-letter to those '70s and '80s adventures.

Went to see it on a whim as I had a free movie voucher that was about to expire and ended up loving it, and when I first got the Blu-ray I was just going to pop it in and check out the quality but ended up re-watching it in its entirety.

Star Trek on the other hand did absolutely nothing for me and while The Force Awakens was OK and I enjoyed the retro ambiance and some of the characters, it just felt too similar to the old ones and too much like just a disjointed sequence of expected scenes. Now it's the scrapyard scene, now it's the lightsaber fight scene, now it's the running through space-station corridors scene etc. (I pretty much had the same feeling the last time I re-watched A New Hope as well, I think Attack of the Clones may have forever soured me on everything Star Wars.)
