From Wikipedia:
"Like in the other films in the series, the 1977 crawl begins to roll before the Star Wars logo dissolves. For the 1981 re-release, the crawl was modified, only beginning after the logo has dissolved; also, the subtitle Episode IV: A NEW HOPE was added to the crawl, one year after The Empire Strikes Back was released. The text was rearranged so that each paragraph did not end with a single word, as well as capitalizing 'Rebel' in 'Rebel spies.' As a result of the reworked crawl, the initial Star Destroyer flyover was recomposited, removing a thick black matte line. The Episode IV: A NEW HOPE subtitle would appear in all future releases of the film, theatrical and home video, with the exception being the 2006 bonus DVD release of the unaltered film." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...rs_re-releases Last edited by Vidya; 02-24-2017 at 01:59 AM. |

Even if Disney does release the UOT, would the films still have the Fox opening logo and fanfare? And what about the alien subtitles with the original font?

But yeah, once again I'll believe it when there is an official announcement. Its like every few years we hear London After Midnight has finally been found, and it turns out to be false. |

So what I'm understanding here is that they must have done a 4K scan of the original negatives (which are the 1997 Special Editions) and then re-added all of the further alterations that had been done afterwards, thus making them higher quality versions of the same "Complete Saga" versions.
I'm actually surprised they ended up doing that-- in the past, I had guessed that they would just leave those versions as is, and a 4K remaster would only be for the originals, and possibly the '97 versions for a more comprehensive release. This is a bummer to hear, as it looks like virtually nothing has actually been done yet at Disney to restore the originals, other than maybe they have a raw 4K scan of the 1997 versions. |

Just from reading the article, I dont see anything that rules out that a restoration has taken place.
The comments from the Disney guy only discussed the current state of the negatives. But it seems like for a restoration of the OOT, they would just scan all the original elements that were cut from the negatives separately, and then reassemble the original cuts digitally. But we really need more info here - what exactly the question was and how this Disney guy responded. He obviously wouldnt be able to give anything away if there was a release planned so he may have just been trying to answer like a politician without lying. But, all this being said, I will be surprised if it actually happens, and we most likely wont hear anything concrete before Celebration. |

I had confirmation a long time ago that this was a 4K restoration of the Lucas edition, from my sources inside the post house. I just didn't know whether it was the 1997 version, 2004 version, or 2011 version. But I'm STILL disappointed, dammit.... even though I already knew. Guess I got my hopes up that things might have changed in the last year or two years since I'd checked.
I think the fact is: most people who actually work on this stuff just don't give a damn which version it is; it's all the same to them. Even Gareth Edwards and his cinematographer Greig Fraser talk in multiple outlets about seeing the "original STAR WARS" in preparation for ROGUE ONE, even though it WASN'T. Lucas has achieved his revisionist dream: his bastardized version has completely usurped the place in the public consciousness that should've been reserved for the original, ground-breaking, award-winning classic. |

"With Gareth Edwards, we wanted to be attentive that the look be consistent with A New Hope, which is seared in our brains. We weren't necessarily trying to reproduce what it actually looked like, but how we remember it -- there's a difference between reality and the remembrance of reality. Part of our research was to look at the 4K scanned versions of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. They look fantastic, but they don't look how I remember them." What I take away from this is: Greig Fraser, at the very least, is not a STAR WARS fanatic like a lot of us on these forums. I watch the movie about three times a year, and have done so for every year since it first came out. I know every frame of it; there's no difference between reality and the remembrance of reality, for me. Most people -- like Greig Fraser -- "have a life", for lack of a better phrase. They may consider themselves fans of the film, but they don't revisit it again and again, or particularly care which version it is. |

I haven't seen Rogue One yet, but just their decision to shoot it digitally shows they don't really get it.
