You're living in a fool's paradise if you think any home video release will bring them "major money" like that. *IF* they did it, it would be as a goodwill gesture for fans. It's not worth as much monetarily as you think it does.
... but imagine the hype of a theatrical re-release as only Disney and Lucas could envision... "Experience the Star Wars old farts have only told you about , Disney and LucasFilm present, Star Wars: Specially Restored 1977 Edition."

Since most of these kids have never seen the theatrical edition, repackage the original cut as the most recent revision of the special edition 4.0! Profit.

I can wait until 2020. Anything that might happen before would, for me, be considered a bonus.
Now 2021, and beyond...I might need to consult a Higher Power.

I agree with Indy. The more time that passes, I have to wonder how big a fan base the OT has.
On message boards and conventions they seem legion. In real life...well there are a lot of content Joe Averages out there.

If it doesnt happen after 2020 then I give up hope. The longer its put off the less meaningful it is and not to mention the SE has been the dominant version for 20 years now. Hopefully we'll get good news at Star Wars Celebration this year. Itll really be a pity to celebrate 40 years of the original movie by not showcasing the original movie in some form.

Original theatricals have been around for 20 years.
Special edition and revision have now also been around for 20 years...
I forgot where I was going with this...

I'm hoping they're giving out false info about a 4K release being the SE, so the surprise can be off the charts!

God help us, they're saving it for the 50th Anniversary in 2027.

Just download the Despecialized Editions. They're the next best thing.

They're really not, though, in my opinion. Obvious roto-scoping, varying quality (by necessity -- I get it) that takes me out of it... even the opening crawl of STAR WARS wobbles and then speeds up weirdly at the end. I try so hard to watch and enjoy these and pretend they're "good enough", but I'm distracted throughout. For a 92-inch projection screen, there really isn't a great option yet. Again... in my opinion. Very disappointed we won't be getting a proper edition this year.

IMO, the roto-scoping and occasional drop in quality isn't nearly as bad as changes like Jedi Rocks, Noooooooooo!, or magic rocks that appear and disappear - those really take me out of the movie. There's also 35mm scans out there for all three movies if you can find them.

AFAIK there are improved Despecialized Editions in the works using scans from theatrical prints.

It's beyond a damn travesty. We have B horror movies receiving beautiful new 4K scans and yet we're stuck with crappy 13 year-old 1080p SE masters.

Considering The Star Wars Show hinted at something major happening at Celebration in regards to the original trilogy, I'm still holding out for a reveal.

Correction - original theatricals have been around for almost 40 years. The special editions didn't negate or erase them from history, nor did they stop aging.

Theatrical prints usually have less information and are further away from the negative than the blu-ray's.

They're just being used to supplement.

Not to put down the B horror movies, because they also have fans (including me) and are important parts of cinematic history, but this truly is a travesty in film history.

I feel like these movies would have been treated like holy texts by any other filmmaker but we are constantly given subpar releases and expected to be thankful we're given anything at all. This isn't an issue of "entitlement", it's an issue of respecting their contributions to moviemaking and storytelling.

I wouldn't call it a travesty. What happened to the roadshow cut of Alamo. Now, that is a travesty.

At 1:33 the hosts say the following in regards to Celebration and the 40th Anniversary Panel:

Quote:
And because it's Celebration and Celebration is a place for surprises, make sure you attend this event. That's all we're going to say. Read between the lines, people.

The male host is horribly annoying, but it was an interesting call out for something major happening. Considering The Star Wars Show was the official place for the reveal of "The Last Jedi" I would take it to actually be an announcement of something significant. Considering they mentioned this as an aside to the 40th Anniversary panel, I think it means more than the first trailer reveal of The Last Jedi.

It's better than using laserdisc or DVD sources though which is the point.
In fact I enjoyed watching the complete 35mm scan of the original ANH that got out there, grainy as hell but felt like the original film again.
