I agree with you.

Darth Maul was made a huge deal of by the fans, who thought he should have been given much more screen time.....

Darth Tyranus however, was a much more interesting villain.

Believe it or not: None of the Prequels get the respect they deserve.

Maybe when the stubborn and short-sighted generation has retired, these films will be re-discovered and considered the classics they should be IMHO.

The Doors was CDS, I didn't remember Gremlins 2 having 70MM prints! GF III and Spartacus went out SR, Air America I don't remember (and still haven't seen). Getting old. I threw on the the new BD of El Mariachi and there was so much of it I didn't remember anymore.

Since you seem to know a lot about this stuff and saw a lot of premieres in Westwood (I've only been to those theaters a few times - the last time I was there, they were playing garbage and I didn't go in), let me ask you this: do you have any proof that Woodstock played in 70mm 6-track discrete? This is how I remember it playing at the Trans-Lux West in NYC, but I've checked all the newspaper listings and there's no reference to it playing in 70mm. Coate and others think I'm nuts. My recollection is that it played in NYC at the Trans-Lux West in 70mm 6-track and at the Trans-Lux East in 35mm 4-track. I remember seeing big Altecs right in the aisles for the surrounds (they must have bribed the fire marshals.)
Are you talking about the re-release or the original? I never saw it theatrically, and what I saw on TV...wasn't "my bag" as Austin Powers would say.
So I wouldn't be able to help you on that one...

No no. That is not a fair comparison AT ALL.

I do agree that Boba Fett was this background character (and I think calling him a secondary character is actually generous.... I don't even think he qualifies as being that high in the ranks.... I don't hate the character by any mean, but he is over rated).

But really, neither Lucas nor his company in terms of how the films were promoted, etc, had anything to do with this huge following that Boba Fett received. That was completely manufactured by the fan community.

However, prior to the movie even coming out, when all we had to go on (as far as the actual content of the movie is concerned) was what little we got in the trailers, The toys were released, etc, and Darth Maul's face was plastered on just about every toy package.

When the Star Wars toy line was relaunched in 1995, all of the figures had Darth Vader's face on the package. And that was pretty much the case with all of the figures (as far as I recall) up until Episode 1 came out, at which point all of the Episode 1 figures had Darth Maul's face in the same spot that Vader's was on all of the OT related figures.

Maul was a big part of promoting the film. He was bad-ass looking, he had a double bladed light saber.... just from a sheer visual and marketing stand point, he was a cool, interesting character and Lucas and company latched onto that and threw it out there at the fans.

Then the movie came out, and the character was barely in it and served almost no purpose other than to be there as an excuse to have lightsaber battles. And it was at that point that many fans were disappointed.

This is very, very different situation than what happened with Boba Fett. your comparison is ridiculous and doesn't hold up at all.

Now, I'm sure you are still going to fault the fans (as you so often do) for being "dumb enough" to latch onto the advertising and promotion being thrown at them (because previous posts and responses of yours on subjects such as this have made similar statements), and I know you seem to think Lucas can do no wrong since it is his property, but at some point Lucas and Co. have to take some responsibility for some of the things that fans complain about, and this is very much one of those things.

You can argue all you want about people's expectations being too high or out of line in many ways, but this was a particular expectation that was manufactured and put into people's heads directly by Lucas and the people he was working with to market the movie.

Return of the Jedi is my favorite and I'm only planning on buying it seperately but I might change my mind when the release date is near. I'll probably say,"What the heck! If I buy one, I'll end up buying the rest." I'll be a Star Wars geek like everyone else who buys it.

If the PT were released without the benefit of the OT to hitch their wagon to they would have been roasted for the mediocre, uninspired film making that they are. The acting was horrible... leave it to George Lucas to get bad performances out of great actors. It probably would have been better if Lucas had handed the directing reins over to someone else as he did with TESB and ROTJ.

I'll be buying the whole set because I want the extras... but if they had released the OT with the extras I would have gone for that instead.

By the time the special editions were released theatrically, digital sound was used in normal 35mm 5.1 configuration. (Sony SDDS had the capability for 8 channel, but none of the original Star Wars films used it when rereleased. The Phantom Menace was released in 8ch SDDS, but according to my notes, Episode II and III were not.)

Episodes I, II, and III were released in Dolby Digital EX (in fact, I think Ep I was the first EX film) and II and III were released in DTS-ES, but I have to be honest and say that at least at the theaters I attended (which did have EX/ES capability), I couldn't tell the difference - the hard center rear was imperceptible.

But you also raise an issue which I've discussed in other posts: How come the same people who scream that the only acceptable version of the OT is the original theatrical version also want the films to be remixed, with people usually asking for 7.1? You can't have it both ways - if you want the original visuals, you should want the original audio mix, which was essentially a 4.1 mix.
maybe Lucas could jumpstart the resurgance for five channel front sound configurement for the 3D release of the films, I'd love to hear the 8-channel mix of 'The Phantom Menace' (even if the movie in of itself is flawed) - if Dolby and Disney/Pixar can kick off 7.1 'surround' sound, than resurgance of five front sound (70mm/8-channel SDDS) would be more than welcome in my book - digital projection can deliver up to 16-channels of lossless digital sound. Anyone who's heard five channel front 70mm/SDDS sound can atest the sound is alot fuller sounding

I would've thought for sure that title would've sported a TrueHD track.

I think it's a given that the blu's will have a new soundmix, I believe it was even confirmed by Matt Wood. I'm praying that Lucas doesn't get a wild hair up his butt and mess with Rydstrom's work on TPM and AOTC.
so why WEREN'T the audio specs announced - that's the first thing I'm most interested in knowing.

Since we're talking about our personal Star Wars rankings, I think I'll make my own.

1. Return of the Jedi
2. A New Hope
3. Revenge of the Sith.
4. Empire Strikes Back
5. Attack of the Clones
6. The Phantom Menace
Many people give the prequels shit they don't deserve. Sure they're not better than the originals, but that doesn't mean they are horrible.

Also does anyone know if Lucas will be making any changes to the films with the BD release like he did with the DVD releases?

Not 100% sure, but knowing how Lucas likes to tweak the films, I bet there will be some changes.
