Here are my rankings:

Empire Strikes Back - Love the darker story and how the heroes are not safe. It creates a true sense of danger

A New Hope (Star Wars) - Great movie that is a good, fun, sci-fi action flick.

Return of the Jedi - Yes, I am more a fan of the OT. I still love Jedi for all of it's flaws. The duel between Luke and Vader had more emotional impact than Anakin/Obi Wan did.

Phantom Menace - Easily the best of the prequels, and is underrated. Pacing was most like the OT, story was interesting, the only PT with an actual space battle, and the best lightsabre duel (with Duel of the Fates) in all six movies. Even with Jar Jar, the movie is great.

Revenge of the Sith - Or the movie of missed opportunities. So much potential that fell flat. The Anakin/Obi Wan duel lacked the emotion and punch it need, choosing visual gimmicks instead. This should have been a dark, emotional duel, but was too focused on the eye candy. Still, a watchable movie with some great moments (I love Palpatine and how creepy he is)

Attack of the Clones - Painful. Worst of the prequels, and the only one I have a hard time watching. Mainly because the love story is unrealistic. "Anakin, we are falling in love because the script needs us to!" Some good fight scenes, and Count Dooku redeem it a bit, though.

Overall, I love the OT and can watch the PT. I find the PT the 'lesser' of the two as the warts there are more noticable that the ones in the OT.

I agree I love all three trilogies(if you count the originals as a separate trilogy. I love them equally and appreacte the hard work it took to make the original trilogy.

However, the originals, dare I say have their own "campiness" and suspect acting in parts of them as well.

I know the Anakin/Padme stuff is way lame and poorly done. Jar Jar is annoying and some of the plot devices are contrived and just exist to get us to the next scene or conflict. Otherwise, we get to see the lead up for what took place in EPs 4 through 6 which is exactly what prequels are supposed to do.

I just cannot get the hate for these.... cant get it.

Its a generational thing and sort of calcualated I think. The Phantom Menace is a film largly deisgned for children (if your hero is a child and the dialogue involves words like "Poo-Doo" you are aiming at a select audience, typical 9-10 year olds). Hell, the violence in the film is largly bloodless. Battle Droids were made because Lucas didn't want to deal with having disembered body parts until later on in the series. Four years later those same kids that LOVED the Phantom Menace, were in the age group that were just discovering their hormones (AOTC). The horrible dialogue is something those 13/14 year olds would find to be something they would say in their confused "I need to speak poetry to get women to love me...' time period. We are ALL embarassed about how we asked the first girl/guy out, and its no different here...lol AOTC is aimed at tweens.

Finally, 3 years later, Revenge of the Sith, which is a much more mature film and (IMO) the best of the prequel series as its aimed at adults and the valuable teen market as well (think the Batman films, mature subject material with plenty of 'pop and circumstance').

What I am trying to say is Lucas aimed the prequel films at a younger generation and the films grew with their audience which was by design. The prequel fims were not made for those of us whom grew up with the OT. Lucas wanted to bridge the generation gap (much like the new Star Trek series is trying to do). Some of us have kids, and Star Wars (the OT) is seen as 'Mom and Dad's Sci Fi', where are the PT is seen as 'My Sci Fi.'

I don't hate the original trilogy, I just see it for what it is. It wasn't made for me. It was made for my kids.

Plural... there's two of 'em. (And they're honestly kinda fun for kids flicks. Just don't expect them to be "star wars" movies.)

I love the overall tone in here:

If you dislike the prequels you're a stiff-assed, over critical snob, and if you like them you're being rational and open-minded.

Everyone, prequel haters included, should get off their high horse and accept the fact that there are two sides to this coin, and both sides have extremely valid points to add strength to their argument. However, the name-calling and assumption that the other side is somehow inferior in their film taste is rediculous. Let's discuss our opinions without insults, like adults.

And I'm going to continue to gripe about the prequels until I'm an old man, filled with regret of what could have been with Anakin's story.

They put them out on a double-feature DVD in 2004 when they first released the OT. It's been OOP for a while and prices are all over the map:
http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Ewok.../dp/B0002YCUR0

You may find a decent deal if you hunt a bit.

Yeah, that's correct. Followed by Innerspace and Robocop.

The Doors was released in both 35mm and 70mm CDS, but I have a note indicating that it may have also been released in 70mm Dolby 6-track and possibly SR. In NYC, it played initially exclusively at the Ziegfeld and unless it was installed specifically for that film and removed afterwards, it doesn't appear that the Ziegfeld ever installed CDS.

Gremlins 2 was definitely released in 70mm, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered seeing it. According to my notes, it played in NYC at the UA Criterion and the City Cinemas Sutton in 70mm SR. I probably saw it at the Criterion.

IMO, Anakin's story was fine except for one gap. It was a lot of the stuff around the primary plot that was the problem, as well as some of the dialogue and acting. But the primary story arc itself was quite compelling IMO, except perhaps for still following Palpatine and the "dark side" after he knew that Padme died, which was his whole reason for following Palpatine in the first place. IMO, they should have added another motivation. (Although he certainly could not have gone back to the Jedi.)

The gap concerns the story between episodes I and II. The trilogy never really explains, aside from his later anger over his mother's death and his fears for Padme, why Anakin goes to the dark side and how the cute and gifted child becomes a ego-ridden, paranoid and deluded brat. If one considers that upbringing would play a large role in causing this, then the Jedi obviously blew this during the ten years between I and II. Seeing that would have been interesting. If instead, it was his genetics that caused this, a fuller explanation would have been interesting as well, but then why didn't the Jedi know this?

I chalk up Anakin becoming an arrogant brat to the fact that he likely knows all about his midichlorian count and the prophecy, and it's just worked on him for the duration of his Jedi training, all the while likely being under a close watch by Yoda and the rest of the Jedi counsel because of his training starting so late in life.

My big problems with Anakin's story is that we are given just that, a wise cracking, rather annoying child, and later on a wooden, arrogant whiner that's either complaining, talking bad about Obi Wan, or giving dreadful one liners to Padme. This is not the iconic Darth Vader we came to love from the OT. I just think his story should have focused more on his gradual descent from being 'a good friend' to Obi Wan (not somebody that talks behind his back and second guesses him constantly RIGHT OFF THE BAT) to the arch nemesis we know from the OT.

And yeah, saving Padme's life, and later not being able to, is a rather weak motivator for slaughtering Jedi younglings and staying under Palpatine for decades after.

I guess you could say that the Clone Wars cartoon series is trying to fill in the blanks..... I don't know, but I do agree with that it needed exploration

Question: Is there anything in the complete set that isn't in the original set aside from the prequels? I was underwhelmed by those newer ones.

The clone wars takes place after episode 2. I think he was referring to the time before episode 2, during Anakin's trials. That's something I would like to see explored more.
