Check my earlier post again -- I said, "[Being] equated roughly to a war-criminal," not literally. Which, if people are getting all butthurt and defensive over this trifle of an observation, it just goes to show how badly things have deteriorated in fandom over the years.

The ugliness (and unfortunate commonality) of the phrase "George Lucas raped my childhood" shows that some comparing him to a war criminal is hardly hyperbole.

So it was just hissy-fit hyperbole then.

Cool, thanks for clearing that up.

The only people who trot out that tired old chestnut are the people whinging about Lucas bashing.

Hey, if you're gonna keep on defending crummy, disgusting fandom-behavior, keep thinking that, I guess.

Correct. Anyone who dares to criticise Lucas gets immediately lumped in with the most extreme fanboy behaviour, the infamous phrase being a convenient catch-all to dismiss any and all negative comments regarding the Holy Creator's decisions.

And then you also see lots of posts like this one in this very same thread, with unnecessary name-calling and claims that insults evidently including "raped my childhood" are entirely appropriate and par-for-the-course for discussion of a fictional movie-series:

Oh, you were doing so well until the "fictional" comment. I love that this series is deemed to be either a sacrosanct piece of art for which the creator's choices are utterly without question or just some dumb made-up piece of hokum that people really shouldn't get so het-up over. Depends which way the wind's blowing, I guess.

That "fictional" part is probably the most important bit of all, matter of fact. This isn't something worthy of getting so worked-up over at the end of the day.

I do see what you're saying, but one can be perfectly critical of a creator's choices in a totally-made-up, massively entertaining, yet-also-unimportant-in-the-grander-scheme-of-the-universe movie franchise without resorting to petty namecalling. There's still lots of valid middle-ground, here (I personally have plenty of issues with the films, for instance).

Lucas is a dick for not releasing the originals. This isn’t an emotionally-heated hyperbolic comment. I’m stating it matter-of-factly. I’ve yet to hear a single good reason for not releasing them. I don’t know why this is considered hating him or overreacting. How’s it any different from calling someone a jerk, ***hole, b*tch, etc. based on their behavior?

That's odd, I didn't mean to put that rolleyes smiley in there, I ****ing hate that one. But yes, point taken that that we can defend an artist's virtue whilst still thinking that their art itself is puerile pap but it still smacks of wanting to shut down people without actually engaging with their grievances. I like to use harsh language when discussing Lucas because, well, I like harsh language in general. Doesn't mean I can't be grateful for the cinematic wonders that he brought to the world, because I truly am, but by the same token I'm not gonna be shy about what I think when it comes to the myriad mistakes that he's also made.

I'll admit that not being able to watch films I loved as a kid colored my feelings on this for years even if I never made comments like the one you reference. I'll also admit that my first viewing of the Despecialized Edition brought me right back to my childhood.

But at this point it's more the fact that one man has seen fit to erase film history that really bothers me. It's similar to how several films, including Best Film winners, have yet to have their theatrical cuts released on blu-ray but worse because: a) again, one man seems to be the problem rather than some faceless studio, b) it's not just the run-time that's been changed in this case and c) the SW original trilogy is of outsized importance as a film/cultural/historical artifact.

Yeah. Lucas isn't the only one sitting on the original versions of award-winning classics but he cops so much shit because he's the public face of it all, it's easier for people to get personal with their anger when they've got a figurehead that they can assail directly rather than a monolithic studio. On the other side of that coin, it's easier for people who support Lucas to fall into blind worship and outright hagiography because they've also got this talismanic figure to revere in all his plaid-clad wonder, rather than some faceless corporate conglomerate.

Indeed. If we don't see any movement on the UOT by 2022 (so post-Fox for all but Ep 4, and the 45th anniversary of the original movie) then my money's on Lucas not letting LFL release the originals until he's dead. [edit] And I REALLY don't mean that in a hand-rubbing bwahahahaaaaa kinda way, but Lucas wants SW to be available to the public in a way which best reflects his input into the process: he alone wants to be held responsible for whether they're good or bad, and in his mind the first film in particular was such a troublesome, watered-down version of his vision that it gnawed away at him for 20 years until he got a chance to really change it, and he didn't stop there. He's made his bed and he wants us to lie in it, fine, but when he dead he don't gotta worry about the lumpy mattress or the squeaky headboard no more.

I can wait. Lucas is an old man and the originals are far too important a piece of film history to be buried.

I’m at the point now where I’m just waiting for this guy to drop over, so the original versions can finally be released - unmolestered and fully restored to what they once were.
