I've watched Rogue Once twice and fell asleep for a little each time - no joke. I wish Vader had a bigger role in the movie.

Rogue One is a bit slow going, it's the sort of film that I could happily go without seeing ever again but when I do see it I love it. It's not just a love letter to Star Wars but is also a neat little bridge between the prequels and the originals.

The new characters in TFA were derivative as hell, but at least Finn, Rey and Kilo Ren had personalities. I took the Plinkett test with Rogue One's characters and failed miserably. I'll never understand the love that movie gets. Worst Star Wars movie since AOTC.

One of the problems for me was, I didn't have much emotional attachment to the main characters/Rebellion and little in the way of something meaningful to remember. Maybe it focused a little too much on technicalities and missed out on some heart and soul? I don't know.

Since we're ranking them:

ESB
SW
-
ROTJ
[Show spoiler](forest moon bits are awful but the Emperor/Vader/Luke stuff alone is worth the price of admission; Vader's death and the funeral pyre are only equaled by the Binary Sunset IMO)

I've seen the other prequels once each and have absolutely no desire to watch them again. Some of the worst films I've ever watched all the way through.

I recommend checking out ROTS again. Not a great movie, has the same bad acting as the first two, but it's far more urgent and exciting. George Lucas literally saved all the best stuff for last. Better than Rogue One, at least.

It pains me to disagree with the great Toonces and risk his terrible vengeance but I can't see myself ever rating ROTS over Rogue One. The 'nooooooooo' alone has scarred me for life. Please forgive me, my all-powerful feline overlord.

(I do promise to give ROTS and AOTC another chance at some point. Much whiskey and/or vodka will be required however.)

In terms of the imagery, the prequels managed to create a bunch of new stuff, without just aping the OT. TFA could easily have done this, using completely new ships, or more evolved versions of the existing designs, but again, they just basically copied the OT designs.

It was obviously a conscious choice, and it paid off for them. But I think it’s a shame, at the very least from a visual and design perspective, as it’s stopped this trilogy from having a more unique aesthetic to allow it to stand on its own feet. Still, TLJ might still have some surprises that we haven’t seen yet, and we still have Episode 9 to go.
Oh, there's a lot more Episodes to go than Episode IX.

Oh, it’s inevitable there would be more saga episodes down the line, but I meant in terms of giving Eps 7 to 9 their own unique visual identity, for that time period in the galaxy.

I thought one of the thrills of the Force Awakens was that it was a wrecked universe...not a used universe like the OT, or the new polished universe of The Phantom Menace...it's a wrecked universe. We'll see how it goes.

Get Star Was on blu and hold on to them for life. The Digital versions are fuked with no Fox opening on all except New Hope and shit quality on Itunes and Vudu. Stay the fuk away from the digital, physical all the way and they don't pull DRM strings on discs.

When you say wrecked, do you mean in a visual way, or the fact things have gone bad again? So the happy ending of Jedi is wrecked, so to speak? If you mean visually, other than the crashed ships and vehicles on Jakku, I’m not sure what else could be considered wrecked.

Jakku is the big one, reminded me of the art direction in Jackson's Lord of the Rings, an implied sense of history and how an old war was still effecting the lives of people left in its wake.

I wonder if any of Lucas’s friends/colleagues tried really hard over the years to convince him to release the unaltered OT.

I always wondered if this was some of the dialogue between Lucasfilm employees and their families each morning.

"Well, I am off to ruin Return Of The Jedi today, kids. What do you have planned?"

They probably did - not that he was listening.
