Yeah. I have no problem with the original hologram. It works within the context of that scene. Even if I did have a problem with it, I would still rather watch the movie in its original context. Special editions and fan edits are fine and dandy, but they will never be anything more than a novelty to me.

Yeah, the fact is that the original emperor was played by Mrs. Chimpanzee-Eye Man-Voice Woman, and the character looks creepy. Maybe the emperor had a bad connection with his cellular hologram service, or he just has giant shifty eyes. Whatever the reason is it looks strange and it’s effective. Replacing him/her with another actor many years later doesn’t negate the effectiveness of the original. For the 6-part series, I guess it’s fine. It might be one of the only extremely noticeable changes that makes sense thematically and is effective, but usually when I watch a movie I want to see the original version (or at least have it be made available), because that’s the one people paid to see in the theater when it came out. I want to see all the work that went into it at the time. Not added characters, replaced characters, digital tinkery, and CGI that doesn’t look organic, etc.

The original hologram was our first ever glimpse of the Emperor. It was designed to be strange, creepy, and, most importantly, mysterious. Even though he appears in the form of a giant hologram, you never feel as though you get quite a good enough look at him, and what you can make out looks awfully strange. It creates a strong sense of intrigue in the viewer. That's why it works. The Emperor's full reveal was, rightfully, saved for RotJ.

I understand the logic behind "updating" the hologram in the special edition/Adywan versions. But, frankly, I find it boring to have the Emperor revealed in plain sight like that. I prefer the original intent of the scene, which was to creep out the viewer and create a sense of mystery about the Emperor. It's much more effective from a dramatic storytelling standpoint. It's how I prefer to watch the movie.

Excellent point about saving the full reveal of the emperor till ROTJ. And as crissrudd4554 pointed out on the previous page, we don’t really get a good look at the Emperor until Luke is brought to him. It’s similar to the Jabba reveal. It works better to save him for ROTJ. It’s more of a shock to see the giant slug after hearing a bit about him in the first two movies, and also is better storytelling since the Greedo scene in Ep. IV makes the Jabba scene pointless.

I dislike the added scene of Vader disembarking from his shuttle in The Empire Strikes Back SE. The recycling of unused footage from Return of the Jedi is obvious.

Couldn't agree with you more. I love the way that the hologram version of the Emperor originally looked in The Empire Strikes Back. Georgie boy most definitely should've saved the Emperor AND Jabba for Return of the Jedi and should've saved Boba Fett for The Empire Strikes Back as well. Pretty much all the special editions did is lift the veil of mystery from several Star Wars characters.

I still cringe at the way Williams music is chopped up with that edit

Yeah, it really destroys the flow of John Williams' awesome "Hyperspace" music. All the additional shots of Vader leaving Bespin and returning to the Star Destroyer feels like Lucas was worried audiences would be confused about how he suddenly got from Cloud City back to the ship. Totally needless.

I also hated the change to Vader saying "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival." The old line was so much more effective: "Bring my shuttle." The way he says it, and being such a short line, and the way he's walking, it's kind of like "Woah, Vader's pissed."

I agree. While some feel Empire is the least damaged from the SE treatment, the trashed paced of its finale is ruinous. Arguably, the other changes to the SEs are more cosmetically distracting; they don't undermine one of the most most dramatic, climactic sequences in the franchise. And, c'mon, re-tracking that reading of Vader's theme--from The Revelation--for the superfluous shot of the helmeted one disembarking from his shuttle? Sacrilege!

When I watched the ANH Blu-ray the other day it was strange hearing the end credits music because of how they repeated some of the music to make room for the special edition credits.

Yes, because the performance is so much better. As someone said, it's like McDiarmid is just reading his lines off a cue card (not unlike Tem Morrison's readings for Boba Fett) and I vastly prefer the original Emperor in that scene.

I can't help but think of Snoke here. Even after seeing him in TFA I feel like I didn't really know what he looked like until TLJ; for the record, I love TLJ

If Lucas had to change anything then he should have fixed matte lines, the wampa arm and the English on the tractor beam terminal in Star Wars. Nothing else he did help the films in any way.

What’s wrong with the English on the tractor beam?

Oh. Is the original Star Wars the only one that has English on a computer screen? I just assumed that any screen text in the unaltered OT was in English.

He’s referring to the Power Beam screen when Obi-Wan deactivates the tractor beam. It was changed to Star Wars language in 2004.

But why is it a problem if it’s in English? Do the unaltered versions of Empire and Jedi have alien text on computer screens?
