Apart from softening the razor-sharp digital-ness of it all -- which is an absolute MUST, for me -- filters like ProMist help highlights look much more photochemical; instead of simply clipping into "video yuck", there's a bit of halation that really smooths the transition. And if you want that Bob Richardson glowy look, ProMist is a must!
That's what I dug so much about Bohemian Rhapsody, Tom Sigel used some netting as well as older Cooke lenses on that first part of the film (using Alexa SXT) and I love the halation on the highlights.

BTW you're a pro cinematographer so you outrank armchair experts by default.

The primary mixes were in Dolby Digital Surround EX - Dolby & Skywalker invented EX for The Phantom Menace.
The 6.1 of the Blu-rays match the intent.

Watched 4K83 last night. It's not quite as successful as 4K77 IMO as the image is a bit too blown out in the brighter parts and that's not just me-being-used-to-HDR talking, but in general, I mean when even Threepio's golden plating just whites out at various points then that's a bit too much. (Did they use an IB Tech print like on the first film or was it an LPP print or something?)

Didn't detract from the overall experience though, it's an honour and a privilege to be able to see these unaltered SW movies in such good quality. And on the plus side most of the garbage mattes that are painfully obvious on the heavily contrast-boosted 'official' HD transfer are printed down correctly in 4K83, I still spotted a few traces of some here and there but they are nothing like as in-your-face as on that ghastly Blu-ray.

4K83 v1.1 was recently released with a new regrade. Much warmer colors and not as blown out.

I do think that's DNR on Episode II, because the original photography looks really sharp.
This screenshot from the starwars.com website shows the actual untampered image:

The Bluray looks really blurry and teal compared to this.

Except at the time the films were released on Blu-ray, George Lucas had not decided to sell Lucasfilm to Disney. And the 3.5 billion dollars that he got for the deal, he donated to fund education projects in America.

He had been preparing to sell his company for a good while and he likely won't donate that money until after his passing.

Regardless, the BD transfer was a shite job, which should've included the theatrical cuts.

It's been in the making since Episode III. Him and Bob Iger I believe are good friends and Disney has been a primary promoter of Star Wars with the ride at Disneyland/World. He was set on selling to Disney and retiring.

As far as the donations, I believe he donated all of it already. Not sure why it was mentioned he hasn't done so yet until he passes. The dude was rich before selling Lucasfilm, and I'm sure there are still stuff under the table he's still collecting.

Unless I'm mistaken, I believe he's only pledged to donate it.

As of 12:03am, Fox is now part of Disney!

No more having to worry about the original 6 films being apart ever again, now just hope that the Fox logos and fanfares are restored forever more and wonderful possibility of Fox co-distributing IX. A great day throughout the land!

Time to celebrate:

Yes, and now that the deal is done, I fully expect 4k releases of the saga to be announced at the Celebration convention next month (for an October release) so that Disney can get a full Disney release on shelves and to build hype for Ep 9.

Now whether they remove the Fox logos from the beginnings of Eps 1-6 like they did for the digital copies (minus Ep 4 of course), or they add the Fox logos to Eps 7-8-9, or whether they leave things as they are with the logos on Eps 1-6 but not on Eps 7-8, who knows what they'll do. My guess is that all Fox logos will be gone on all episodes. But guess we'll see.

Dont quote me on this, but I believe Iger (or Disney) said they will still hold production and distribute fox studios, like searchlight and 21st Century. Future movies will still feature those labels (at least for a time) so I don't think they are going to remove the fox logos because they were still made under their studio. They still have Paramount in their newer Marvel releases. Since Fox is there's now, it's no different than using Touchstone for Nightmare or Miramax.

but like you said, we'll see I guess.

I would agree, though it's worth noting they removed the Fox logos for the digital releases. That said, that was before the buyout, so it's hard to say. Hopefully they keep them.

For every other film in Fox's catalog, I would agree with you. But this is Star Wars!! It's just different. And so who knows what they will do. But I absolutely DO expect 4K re-releases of Eps 1-8 this year. I also wouldn't be surprised if they did a limited theatrical event this summer.

I might be wrong, but could they be waiting To release a big box set for after 9. As the whole Skywalker saga? They could also do 1-6 and then a new collection with 1-9.

There's always a possibility of doing both. Maybe barebones individual/steelbook 4K releases this year, with a big boxed set of 1-9 next year (with all sorts of extras, the theatrical cuts in 4K, etc).

Of course. However, I think the market for it would be pretty small unless it was loaded with lots of extras. It would likely be $200+. Personally, I just want the theatrical release of the first two films and I'll be happy.
