I was simply saying I was surprised how many uber-positive comments this clip got, on all kinds of social media. I'm a super open-minded nerd when it comes to enjoying all things STAR WARS, and yet this made me shake my head and wonder what other people were seeing. I don't know why that qualifies as "buttheart", as you put it... in such typically classy language.
The clip looks cheesy as **** in terms of production values - fan film is fan film - but once I got into it I started enjoying it. Do I think it should be part of the actual film in any way, shape or form? HECK no.

Someone hinted at this a few pages back but it's the same reaction I have to all these things that 'reimagine' Lucas' work (like the ghastly Revisited): how comes it's okay for people to deface Star Wars but not Lucas himself? If Lucas had revised that scene himself, shot for shot like the YT video, then the fanrage would be heard across the galaxy. But when internet randoms do it, people go crazy for it. Huh.

It's hardly "defacing" anything. If you don't like it, fine. But others do.

People love it *because* it's a fan-made thing on YouTube. One, it's damn impressive that non-professionals can make something that good. And two, it can be safely enjoyed outside of the film proper. If Lucas had done it, it would be a part of the film moving forward, to the exclusion of what came before.

People wouldn't b!tch about Lucas if he had simply kept the original versions available, alongside his updated ones.

I would imagine the recording is the exact same thing, but for collectibility, it's hard to beat Japanese imports

There's a HUGE difference between a fan doing an edit like this and Lucas editing his film. The fan-made film will never replace the real deal. You can enjoy the fan product for what it is (or hate it if it's bad), but good or bad, it'll never replace the actual film. I can remember when the first SE commercials ran in the theater I was really excited for them!! How could I not be? Being a SW fan since 77 I was really excited to see some new scenes added. I went to see each SE as soon as they were released. Some of the scenes have merit and are cool, others are garbage! Still, I support the fact that they exist and really don't care if Lucas made a new Special Edition every year until he dies. Where he crossed the line though is yanking the original film, telling us it was an unfinished product and will never be released again...forcing us to watch these new digital turds and accept them as the "one true version"! F*** Lucas! It was a dick move on his part, especially coming from a guy that years before was speaking out against those that would change the "art" of film (be it colorizing classics, etc). What a hypocrite!
If he loved and preferred the SE's, that's great. More power to him. He didn't have to be a d**k to the fans that made him as rich as he is and take a dump on these historical films that have existed for over 40 years now. There was no reason for him not to have both versions of the film available to the fans. I lost ALL respect for this man that meant so much to me growing up.
So.. back to the fan-made films. There's nothing wrong with them. They are harmless. At best they give you a few minutes of enjoyment, at worst they waste a few minutes of your time. They will never alter the films they based them on.

I want a mastered in 4K original cut of the Phantom Menace. Never cared for the extended stuff thrown back in and the current disc doesn't look very good.

At this point I'm so used to the extended cut of Phantom Menace that the theatrical just wouldn't feel right to me. But 100% agree that it needs to be remastered, and including both cuts couldn't hurt (but it's Star Wars, so....).

He painted himself into a corner (angering fans by attempting to erase the originals in favour of his grotesque revisions) and is too stubborn to do the right thing. That and the three violent bowel movements he ‘gifted’ fans with.

I like the passion for that Vader SC38.

Starts out solid before going downhill on various levels.
(Some fun flame effects on Vader)

Is it over-the-top sillyness and rough at times,... sure.
Judging this as something a major studio would do, it's terrible, but judging this as a fan video, its a step above.

With some film/design help and project managers I think this guy could do something solid with the right help.

My biggest criticism with SC38 is that it makes Obi-Wan seem young again. The whole lore created by the original fight with Alec Guiness was that he was physically old and slow, and it worked well to explain his force ghost change. This fight just kinda threw the "You're powers are weak, old man" line out the window imo

Still, it was well done. The choreography was nice, the music not so much, and the effects were spot on. The guy should redo TLJ Luke versus Ren and actually give us a fight with Luke force crushing ships while actually dueling with Ren, lol

In nearly every major instance I can think of where a filmmaker has dramatically altered one of their films in some way by adding new visual effects, deleted scenes, or re-editing, The original theatrical cut is usually always kept in circulation alongside whatever new Director preferred version is being released with the odd exception here or there. This is the biggest issue that most fans as well as myself have with Lucas.

I wouldn't care if George Lucas released a new cut of his films every other week as long as the original release version is readily available.

I agree. I also find it really weird that a few versions of the special editions were released. Many of the changes aren’t even due to technological restrictions of the time. It’s like, “I think I’ll throw in a “No” here. I think I’ll add Jar Jar here. Let me add this layer of rock over R2. I think I’ll make the time difference between Han and Greedo’s shots shorter. I’ll make it even shorter for the next release,” etc. Such a weird mentality to constantly want to add and subtract stuff to a film. If that’s how Lucas felt, why ever release them? According to his way of thinking that would be like releasing all the different cuts a film goes through before the final edit.

I get that....however I find it less ridiculous than seeing a 900 year old yoda doing flips and moving super fast! While I know many fans liked that scene I thought it looked absolutely ridiculous!!

The differences are definitely minor, but the big extension is the opening to the podrace sequence. Unlike a lot of people, the podrace sequence is not a highlight of the film for me, and it went on long enough as it was originally. I'd take back strung-out-on-crack puppet Yoda to get the original theatrical cut back.

There are literally no George Lucas films (in decent quality) that are available in their original versions.

Edit: Except maybe Revenge of the Sith? Can’t remember.

In all fairness, the podracing sequence really has to be seen in 3D to be fully appreciated, imho

Even that has been slightly altered, but it is the least fiddled with of the original 6 pre Disney films overall.

The Blu-ray had some foilage and rust added to the tops of the Wookiee huts, and some brief additional ADR was added in a scene of Clone Troopers who originally didn't speak. Before these changes, even the DVD had a straight cut to a scene that originally transitioned with a wipe, so no home video version of Revenge of the Sith has ever been 100% unchanged from the theatrical cut.
