Agreed. Anyone that grew up when Star Wars was released knows there are only 3 movies. Those movies sadly may be lost to time. We won’t know until 2027. This thread should have been moved to the wishlist forum a longtime ago.

Finally got a good look at 4K77 on a huge screen today, and it didn't look that much better to me than my beloved Silver Screen Edition -- which I've watched and enjoyed many many times. What's the consensus on the DNR vs non-DNR 4K77? Version I saw was "DNR", and I did see some occasional weird artifacting in smoky shots -- though admittedly it was on a friend's 120-inch screen only nine feet away.

This and a potential Infinity Saga box set are the only 4K rereleases I’m more than willing to rebuy despite already owning all movies in both franchises on regular Blu-ray. I hope it’s what everyone wants rather than a simple repackage.

I dont know. I was born in 1971 and I've always felt that anybody that old knows that the world isn't black and white and that all things go the way of all things and that George Lucas was a personality in the great vast scheme of things that had something to say.

All things will eventually go the way of flesh, but to purposefully make it so is upsetting.

I don’t know if this has been pointed out but the runtime that is stated on the ESB and ROTJ listings are that if the special editions. I think that the potential 4K release will be the best hope of a properly updated versions. Although at this point I’d just take a blu ray release with better colour timing. It baffles me why we haven’t seen a set that has the special edition fully restored as Disney’s disc one ‘canon version’ and then another disc or a branched version of the theatrical edition.

With that said I actually think a disc that has branched versions of all the various releases would be a pretty fun way to release the films on home video, in a similar way to how the recent arrow video water world release was setup.

"That name no longer has any meaning to me."
"It is the name of your true self. You've only forgotten."

Three things I'd suggest to people focused on this point about Force Ghosts....so far in the film saga, going just by the films and nothing else, no one else still living other than Yoda and Luke have even seen a Force Ghost (and I guess Kylo and Leia, although Luke wasn't apparently absolutely dead yet). So we may be talking some P.O.V. subjectivity going on, if you really want to get that deep -- that it's the characters as Luke sees them, or as Kylo sees them, or Yoda, not what they actually look like. Get me?

The other -- Anakin never looked like a physically healthy Sebastian Shaw, he'd look like a hacked-up burn victim without legs and missing an arm in the afterlife (if we're going to get crazy literal with this stuff). I think it's a spiritual metaphor, nothing more complicated than that.

And the third obvious one...Hayden and Ewan weren't cast yet as Anakin and Obi-Wan in 1983, and Lucas, of all modern filmmakers, doesn't feel locked down, everything is up for grabs in terms of plussing a film, it's still a work in progress. It's that whole "movies are never finished, only abandoned" thing.

I was actually surprised Lucas didn't re-do Vader's death moment with Luke in Return of the Jedi, replacing Shaw entirely, filming a disfigured Hayden in make-up. It's over the shoulder shots, would be the easiest thing in the world. I think some people would have stormed Skywalker Ranch with torches and pitchforks, though, even if replacing Shaw actually would have made sense post-Episode III.

Luke wasn't dead at all at that point. Not a Force ghost.

Because Obi wanted to appear as his older self. Anakin never got to see how he would have looked as an older man. His body was destroyed at the age of 22 so how would he even know what he would look like as an older man? And all of Anakin's best memories, except one, are before his fall to the Dark Side, when he was a young man. So he manifested as he was before his fall to the dark side.

My take on Anakin’s Force Ghost. Part of my issue of having Hayden appear IMO makes Anakins redemption less meaningful and deceptive. It almost pushes the idea that had he survived we are to think he will just return to the whiny young Jedi he was years ago which I think most of us will agree wouldnt be the case. IMO the redemption is more about a man turning his back on evil for good than simply reverting to who he had been many years before. The spirit Luke sees is the redeemed man who saved his life, not the whiny arrogant Jedi who would ultimately turn his back on good.

Not to mention Luke never knew the younger version of his father so seeing the redeemed elderly man he saw behind the mask (with or without scars) IMO has more weight and logic then seeing the younger arrogant Jedi that he never knew. As for “but Anakin didn’t know what he looked like”. Can you give evidence that Obi-Wan and Yoda know what they look?? Haven’t seen mirrors in those huts! Plus I see no reason to think that even through the Force you can’t take the form of things you never were. Elderly Anakin could just be what Anakin’s vision of who he should look like at that conjuncture should be. Also if he can’t choose his form why is he in Jedi robes he never had?? Anyways just my two cents.

https://www.thedigitalfix.com/film/c...alker-saga-4k/

This part in particular is really interesting:

"Following a second conversation our contact helped clarify that Disney are working towards delivering something that will "please fans" and that the original material has come from a "variety of source ... much of the original film and negative stock was in poor condition even before George worked on the Special Editions" and the restoration team sought out the "best possible version" of each scene within the LucasFilm and Fox archives. The original trilogy 4K remaster was started way back in 2014 and has been through a number of iterations as new alternative/better copies of some scenes have come to light. The print watched by Gareth Edwards has had some improvement since he viewed it but everything other than Episodes II and III has been locked in now.

The issue with the prequel trilogy is that while Episode I was captured on film and can be mastered in 4K with no issues, Episodes II and III were both shot in 2K digital which means that any 4K master is going to be an upscale. Work is being done to "improve effects shots where possible" however "there is limited detail in the 2K image and any live action shots will see no significant boost in quality" over the Blu-ray release.

In addition to the new masters, Disney are in the process of going through all of the Fox and LucasFilm archives in order to release as much material that has yet to be shown anywhere to fans as possible making this effectively the 'ultimate Star Wars' collection.

According to our contact the two spin-offs - Rogue One and Solo will be re-released at the same time with artwork to match, but won't be included in the Skywalker Saga collection; although they have said that discussions in the US have changed this decision at least once before so they may well end up in the box set anyway if things change again.

Disney are apparently hoping to have four discs per film in the 4K set (3 in the standard Blu-ray edition) so we're expecting both 4K and Blu-ray editions of the film plus where possibly two additional discs of extra material. These additional discs will be 1080p at best although some of the material being recovered is going to be upscaled SD."
This all sounds way too good to be true. Especially considering Disney has never gone that far for any other movie before.

I disagree. Were there no mirrors in the Imperial bases and star ships?

Darth is even shown putting his mask and helmet on in Empire before talking to the Emperor. He's seen his scarred face.

He knows what he should look like at this point in his life, and it makes more sense for him to be the redeemed old man, than young Anakin who Luke wouldn't even recognize like crissrudd says. At least he saw his fathers face once as an old scarred man after killing the Emperor.

It also happens to screw over Sebastian Shaw by robbing him of his 10 seconds of none-Vaderness.

If the original intent was to match it up with the younger self, why not CGI unmasked Vader into scarred Hayden for the redemption scene in the Death Star.

So Disney is finally re-releasing the saga in time for Christmas, for the idk what time, again, just to gain on that Star Wars 9 hype. But no IV, even though they now own Fox, and no 4K, though if there were, we'd never see the light of it in Spain.

I hate how Disney always does things only to further promote something, it's so.. so idk, so enterprisey.

Sure they have. Not recently, but Disney's got some amazing sets in their home video history. LucasFilm upped their game over time -- understandable as you're essentially an independent studio surviving on Star Wars and Indiana Jones, so LucasFilm had to keep giving you a reason to to re-buy the same films all over again...right? Right.

Meanwhile, Pixar came out of the box swinging for the horizon. Marvel seems to have scaled back a bit (I think for the same reason as LucasFilm...going to be re-selling these movies for a long, long time)...but my initial point. Disney Animation Studios DVD and Laserdisc sets from the mid-90's on up to mid 2000's -- pretty spectacular, so much so, they're kinda the reference point for the studio. It's just not correct to say the company has never gone bugnuts on a catalog title as a source of pride and fan service. Oh, hell yes, they have. Just not recently. And as I've said before, the diamond in the coal pit of this upcoming Disney+ upheaval is treating physical releases with bonus incentives....if you can watch classics all day long in UHD through your Smart TV, why buy the disc? Studios are going to have to re-approach physical media. Gonna have to come up with a reason. Second Screen didn't work. BD-Live sure as hell didn't work. 4K with identical masters to what everybody already owns and junk bonus features sure ain't gonna do it.

I think there's more of a spiritual angle reflected through visuals, and maybe shouldn't be taken so literally, but, Lucas changed it from what we all grew up with, so here we are. As I said, I'm surprised Lucas didn't go and replace Shaw from Return of the Jedi entirely with Hayden, as it would be relatively simple.

It's there, but not on the main page. Had to hunt for it a bit:

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Star-...lu-ray/247567/

Also, has anyone figured out that release date? 9/22 is a Sunday.
