Instead we got the Nyquil version, turning what's supposed to be a revision showing the first sign of cracks in the Vader/Palps dynamic - they're both trying to recruit Luke to destroy the other one - into something that lands with an almighty clunk. Typical George Lucas revision then: half-decent idea, abysmal execution. And the Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo in Jedi can simply go Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck itself.
To be honest, you could sort of interpret the original dialogue that way, too. However, I always took it to mean that Vader was already subconsciously protecting his son's life, trying to talk the Emperor out of just killing him.

But either way, the original dialogue actually conveys more in fewer words than the clunky revised version.

Sort of like how "Bring my shuttle" became "Alert my Star Destroyer to prepare for my arrival.... because I'm, like, going to my Star Destroyer. See? Watch me walk up to my shuttle..... Now watch me slowly exit my shuttle into the hangar on my Death St... er, Star Destroyer...."

The guy is so deluded that he actually thinks his CGI looks seamless and realistic. Have you heard the THX 1138 commentary? All the time he pretends this is the movie he originally made, ignoring the (obvious) CGI completely.

Amazing how much you can say with as little as possible. I admire that when it works.

George Lucas is anything but deluded.

When it comes to THX 1138 I'm like those people who only know Star Wars from the Special Editions and have never seen the originals. I've only ever seen the altered THX 1138 and so to me that's the movie. I know that's not historically accurate but I don't much care.

"Movies aren't finished, only abandoned." I get that. To play advocate on your point of view, that "gotta keep plussing and fixing" production focus doesn't jibe with the whole "let go and stop trying to control things" philosophy of the Jedi in the Prequels, so, there's a whole mix of conflicting attitudes in the films.
In order for there to be balance the Classic Editions must co-exist with the Facelift Editions.

It especially doesn’t make sense in Lucas’s case because the CGI doesn’t mix well with late 70s/early 80s movies. Even if it did mix well, a movie is a product of its time. Having a character in The Phantom Menace talk about embracing change isn’t going to convince me otherwise. I’m not going to agree that all forms of deliberate change are good just because a character in a movie says we shouldn’t fear change.
I agree that the cgi doesn't mix well with the older effects, but I always wished for all of the older or dated effects being replaced with more modern cgi effects. I personally loved the changes (for the most part) though I always felt that it felt odd because it was only in part updated. Watching the films in episode order, rather than release order, it definitely feels that they are part of a whole seeing similar modern effects in the OT, but again I feel it would be better to see all new effects for the OT. I grew up with the untouched VHS OT in the 80's and 90's and it really didn't effect my love for the films when they made the changes, and after seeing the untouched versions on DVD, I really wouldn't care to buy them again on Bluray or 4k. I'm sure at some point Disney will release the untouched versions on 4k and the sales won't be as high since entire generations have now grown up with the "special editions". I saw a version on Youtube that someone redid the CGI and it looked amazing! I just wish Disney would update them again. Again it's all subjective, I was also very disappointed that we never got the OT in 3D.

Sure and while we’re at it let’s replace the old stop motion puppet in the old King Kong or Bruce in Jaws with CGI. The older it gets the more it needs to be updated yes?? Sorry I respectfully disagree with that idea. Films, like art, are and should remain products of the periods they were made in, not reinvented with each passing decade so it is more fitting with today’s filmmaking and effects. I can respect George wanting to update the films to appease his ‘vision’ but at the expense of the versions that changed filmmaking forever and solidified his career as one of the most successful filmmakers and screenwriters?? No thanks. I can respect when folks see some changes and think ‘I actually like that better’ but to say I watched the old versions and wanted them changed I just can’t understand.

It’s no different than watching Black & White stuff colorized. Why?? Is lack of color really a dealbreaker in the quality of the content?? For me the original films shouldn’t have to fit in seamlessly with the PT because they were made 20+ years earlier and obviously did not have the benefit of the technology that the PT employed. And more importantly future generations will now be misled into thinking that effects used to alter these films is what was actually available when they were first made. I can respect Mr. Lucas for wanting to make the films his way, I can’t respect him for rewriting history.

It would be like replacing some of the practical effects in John Carpenter’s The Thing with CGI so that it fits in better with all the CGI in The Thing prequel.

Again it's all subjective, though any artist will tell you that they are never finished with their art and would spend a lifetime to "improve it" if they could. Also again, I'm sure Disney will release the original OT in 4K along with the SE OT to appease fans, but for myself and others who feel the same way, it's not right or wrong to like a specific version of a piece of art. If Disney, outside of the original artist, changed anything in any of the films 1-6, I'd be very upset, but not for the original artist(s) to continue working on their art.

Far from great, but an improvement over the Marvel catalog covers imo.

And I understand why, but I still hate that Disney is trying to drop the Episode numbers.

It would look so much better if it wasn’t all shoved into a small rectangle in the center of the cover. If it was full art, it would be nice.

Maybe they release the original versions exclusively on Disney+. That would get a lot of Star Wars fans to subscribe.

I quite like the new art, actually.

It almost makes me want to watch Solo. Almost.

Same. If this art is used for future 4K releases.. that border will make these look slick as heck, with the black banner. The only downside, would be if they hit 4k before The Rise of Skywalker, as it would mean it won't match all the others.
