And I had a conversation with my friends the other day and have come to the conclusion that it seems that most people born in the very late 80s and early 90s who had both the original trilogy and were young when Episode 1 came out, enjoy the prequels much more than those who didn't. It was exciting for us because we had a chance to see a new Star Wars trilogy unfold, in theaters at a young age. It was captivating, much like it was for those who saw Star Wars in 1977. Is it the originals? No, but it was still Star Wars and it was awesome to see a new story on the screen! I'm almost 21 and I will stick by that. I love the whole series, and I always will. It's enthralling, exciting, and just incredible
Born in the 60's and was around for the the mad Star Wars rush of the 70's and 80's. I love the prequels, sure they are not perfect movies but neither were the original even if some would have us believe otherwise. I would rather watch the prequels any day of the weeks then a lot of other crap movies Hollywood as been making the last 10 years.

Most of those who hate the prequels just built up too much, way too much expectation in their minds about them. They probably spend all of their time from 1997 to 1999 going "THESE WILL BE THE GREATEST MOVIES OF ALL TIMES LUCAS IS A GOD !!!" and dream of them 24/7 none stop. They quickly put up these movies to a level that they just could never achieved. In the end they were disapointed and decide to hate Lucas. Then the other part of it is many of them also hate the Special Editions and from that moment on hate everything about Lucas. For those people no matter how incredible the prequels would have been, they would have hated them in any case.

Yeah, good way to look at it. It was almost a lose-lose situation for the prequels. The expectations were incredibly high and many of the fans of the originals were now older, wiser, more privy to movie-making techniques and they understood better what makes a truly great movie. So, the fans themsleves had changed somewhat from the wide-eyed 7 to 13 year olds that saw the originals. We were now seeing Star Wars films as 30 - 45 year olds! Huge difference in perception. Thats why you see a lot of people commenting on how cheesey some of their favorite 80's films are now that they have watched them as adults. As a kid, lots of films are just fine. As an adult, the same film can seem hopelessly dated, chintzy and outright silly. Happens all the time to me.

Not saying the prequels are perfect - far from it. But, they are Star Wars movies and I enjoy them just as I do the originals.

I also saw the original Star Wars film during its original theatrical run.

I personally groaned with fear when I heard about the Prequels... and the Phantom Menace turned out to confirm my worst nightmare.

So it seems that whether someone expected too much or too little of the Prequels, they didn't like them either way.

Having said that, I actually do, for the most part, enjoy the third prequel if I can manage to overlook the hot-rod jedi routine that's completely incongruous with the original trilogy. But other than that, it at least steps up to the plate with a real story, developed characters, and fills in a nice back-story of Darth Vadar that flows well into Episode 4.

I'm 17, so yes the PT was a cool theatrical experience for me as a kid. However, I still love the OT more. I don't know if it's because I still saw them first, or because they're better films, or some other third thing, but I have a hunch that like most things, it just comes down to personal preference. Maybe I just have a higher tolerance to the PT because I'm younger and more open-minded.

Some older people here have already stated that they prefer the PT so it has nothing to do with being "younger and more open-minded." On my part, I look at the PT and OT as one whole story so I really have no preference of one over the other. So yeah, I guess I just like them all for what they are, Star Wars.

If the prequels had been made first, even with the technology available in 1977, we would have considered them to be amazing films and I think they would have been just as acclaimed as the original Star Wars was. But one of the reasons Star Wars was so loved was because we had never seen anything like it before. With the possible exception of The Wizard of Oz, there was never before a fantasy film with that kind of production budget. And the Saturday morning serials that partially influenced it (and 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark") had pathetically low budgets - wooden acting and cardboard sets, etc.

By the time we got to the PT, we had seen it all before, so no matter what Lucas did, it couldn't have been as great. Similarly, when the first James Bond films were released in the 1960s (Dr. No, From Russia With Love and Goldfinger), they were considered fresh and sophisticated adult fun movies, but by the fourth film (and most that came afterwards up until the Casino Royale reboot), we were far less impressed because we had seen it all before.

If the PT had been made first, the difference would have been that we wouldn't have liked the second film as much and the third would have been considered the "better film" the same way as most people consider "The Empire Strikes Back" as the best of the OT.

That's not to say that the PT couldn't have been better. I don't think the story line was weak -- IMO, it's a pretty good origin and political story, but I do think that the dialog, some aspects of the performances and certain character development was not as strong as it could have been. I think Lucas' issue was that he spent far too much of his energies on set design and special effects and too little on those other aspects of the films.

Well, not really. I enjoy the original trilogy, and while I was expecting the prequel trilogy to be just as great, I was actually more excited about upcoming movies such as The Matrix, Fight Club and The Mummy.

If I hate the prequel trilogy, it's not because I had a lot of expectations, but simply because I thought they were bad films (I'm not saying they're objectively bad films, simply that in my opinion, they are bad), right up there with Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. All the emotion and excitement from the original trilogy was gone, and replaced with flashy visual effects.

I saw them only once, when they were released, and I am not planning to see them again.

It's well known that Lucas doesn't like directing... he doesn't relate well to people and seems a bit of an introvert. It shows in the poor performances he got from his actors in the PT.

I saw the original theatrical release of ANH when I was 9... about the right age to be blown away by the film(s). They were excellent escapist entertainment... equal parts Flash Gordon/Kurosawa/Archetypal Odyssey. Not only that... the films were, for lack of a better word, "charming". They dazzled with effects but they also told a story that was compelling... the actor's performances wouldn't win any academy awards but they were competent and convincing.

The PT tells some convoluted political background story that has forgotten the reasons why the original films were as popular as they were. I would contend that a film like TPM would have been about as memorable as Logan's Run or Silent Running if it were released in '77. It's wooden... lifeless. As a matter of fact I'm probably doing a disservice to the other films I've mentioned. None of the characters are anywhere near as engaging as Hamill's Luke, Guiness's Ben or Ford's Solo. They're just... not.

The PT is more like a George Lucas puppet show. There was something chaotic and unpredictable about the original films and their production that just can't be repeated.

Who cares about the unaltered OT, what this set really needs is a digitally remastered version of The Holiday Special

Do you guys think that they will just clean up the A/V quality for the blu-ray release, or do you think George will tinker with it a little more?

That must be one big worm to get his own can!

I wonder why almost no one remasters to 8K like Baraka? Too expensive? I'll bet this economy has hit george particularly bad.

No,really, after all this Star Wars talk on here the last few days, I've been watching all the dvd's in order(about to watch ROTJ), and they really don't look that bad upconverted. I think they would almost have to try to make this turn out bad! I've heard that they have been working on the HD SW for four or five years.

Yeah,"First of its kind 8K scan from fully restored 70mm film" according to the case. I thought it looked spectacular. Maybe they will give Star Wars a 16K scan
