Exactly. Lucas could easily include the theatricals, what with seamless branching or extra discs or whatever. It's just that his ego won't allow him to do it. He wants the original creations that made him rich and powerful to "disappear".

Yeah I got an email with an updated ETA for my pre-order of the complete saga earlier in the week. The 27th sounds good to me, and now... we wait.

Exactly. I can't imagine that even a small percentage of the apologists would defend the intentional holding back of the original cut of a film by any other director.

If the Blu-rays of the Alien films had come out in only their "enhanced" editions, the same people would be crying bloody murder.

The only argument anyone can give is "it's his film, he can do what he wants" like it's some conversation ender. Yes, the man owns the copyright to the films. No one cares what he does to them, he can paint poorly done CGI pictures all over them (oh wait, he already has...), it's the he has previously been trying to erase them from existence.

That said, I do think he is changing his tune. Post after post here says "never ever!" and, well, the one thing you learn as you mature is that you never say never. Lucas has stopped with the laughably inappropriate "Workprint" and "rough draft" talk, and now refers to them as the "classic" editions.

My guess is, just like we saw on DVD, he'll release the 3-Dope versions of them on Blu-ray, one at a time, and attach the OT with new HD scans (either by taking the money to reconstruct the original print, or by simply using one of the interpositives, etc.) of the "classic" versions as a "bonus" on the new discs as they come out (just like he did of the SE's of Star Wars in 2006 on DVD).

This would be incredibly smart, because many people like myself wouldn't buy those versions, but if he attached an HD scan of the original trilogy as an "extra", I sure as heck would even though I'd never watch the "main" feature.

Oh, and on the "fan version" discussion going on - apparently, Lucas does not mind. If he did, they would not be on YouTube. YouTube has "hotlines" for studios and copyright owners to pull the alarm on anything they don't like. For example - try to find a clip from Saturday Night Live on YouTube. Almost impossible, and the few that don't get automatically marked for deletion are people holding a camera recording their TV (and even those are eventually caught).

If you type "star wars fan edit" into YouTube, you can see that obviously Lucasfilm has done no such thing, as they are freely available. Just one phone call or email to YouTube would end that, so I say if Lucasfilm doesn't care, neither should any of us.

Just noticed a funny line in ANH, Obi-Wan says, "A young Jedi named Darth Vader..." and later on in the movie, he calls him "Darth".

After watching the PT a few times, this just sounds funny. Ben surely would have called him "Anakin" and I'm not sure about calling Vader a Jedi...

That's surprising, but delightful to hear nonetheless. We've all poured a small fortune into the SW movies on various formats over the years, catching it for the 10000th time on YouTube won't hurt sales at all. Especially since the chances of you already owning the movies are extremely high.

How would you retitle it? The Complete Saga, Original Trilogy, and Prequel Trilogy are all being released. It doesn't say the original original trilogy is being released.

I think what that fanedit site is doing is ethically sound. Seems like they don't have download links, etc. They just have passed it around. And each time to a person who was clearly a fan of star wars, owning several home video versions of the movies. Then it gets on P2P and its then dicey territory.

Still, while I don't condone saying "his edit is the definitive edit" I also believe this is interesting to see, and won't hurt sales on bluray. These fan edits will always be years in lag of the official releases, and any attempt to silence or sue these fans will be globally seen as a death null for hardcore fans to tolerate Lucas. He is right to leave it be and continue doing whatever he wants with his works.

My wallet is going to hate october :P Anyone know if the saga will be region free U.S?? I don't want to pay 150+$ for my aussie version.

I would sell stuff which I don't need/watch.

Besides that, I also do not watch the horrible theatrical DVDs and it is even more unlikley that I would watch them I I had the SEs on BD.

The thing is, I would prefer the unaltered OT when they were avaialable in good quality.

Also, can someone PLEASE explain what ol' Ben mean by the following line-

"Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did."

BTW, did any of you guys happen to catch how Adywan just added one line from the radio drama to Bigg's death, and improved it by 1000%?

Well, Obi-Wan is using his "Certain Point Of View" thing in regard to Anakin/Vader.

I'm sure Anakin would have wanted his son to have his lightsaber if something happened to him.
If you know, he hadn't turned to the Dark Side destroyed the Jedi Order and became Darth Vader and such.

As for the other part, Obi-Wan had planned to give Luke his father's lightsaber and been a part of his life earlier.
But Owen was against it, because he blamed Obi-Wan and the Jedi for what happened to Anakin.

I think Owen pretty much thought Anakin had a screw loose after he went nuts after meeting him five minutes earlier. And Obi just turned up in the middle of the night with some baby and said "keep him safe and hidden I'll be watching from the Dunes...."

Jedi's weren't the bees knees on Tatooine.

It is really surprising how great he made that edit work out.

Man...that "Certain Point Of View" angle. One of the many reasons I cannot stomach RotJ.

That will be the film that I will watch the least from the upcoming set, including the prequels.

Beast... are you making this stuff up or did you read it somewhere? I'm reminded of the little dutch boy with his finger in the dyke. The dyke that is the Star Wars storyline has so many holes and cracks in it that I'm afraid you'll need more than your ten digits to plug them up.

It's information from the Expanded Universe. While not film canon, some of it does fill in the details not seen on screen.

All this info is accessible in official handbooks and even on StarWars.Com for anyone who cares to look. So chill out.

Quote:
Fearful of having Luke follow Anakin's path, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru protected their nephew from his past by telling him that his father, rather than being a Jedi Knight, "was a navigator on a spice freighter". Owen also tried to keep him away from the "crazy old hermit," "Ben" Kenobi.

A few years later, Kenobi had found Luke and his friend Windy Marstrap alone in the Jundland Wastes. The two youths had tried to ease their boredom by riding Windy's pet dewback around in the Wastes. They had been thrown in one of the canyons and had gotten bruised up. By dusk, Luke and Windy still hadn't found their way out of the canyon until they were discovered by Ben Kenobi. After Kenobi guided them back to the Lars farm, Owen told Luke and his friend to go inside so they would be out of earshot, then confronted and berated Kenobi.

The reason for Owen's anger was that Kenobi had attempted to give Anakin's lightsaber to Luke, since he felt that Luke was old enough and should be allowed to have it. Owen refused to allow it because he believed the Jedi path was a destructive one. He told Kenobi he didn't want Luke to make the same mistakes his father did, stating how he felt Anakin should have never left his mother in slavery and gotten involved with the "damned foolish idealistic Jedi crusaders" in the first place. He vehemently told Kenobi to leave and to stay away.

In Ben's lie to Luke, when Anakin died, Vader was born. Vader was never a Jedi or Ben's pupil, even in his point-of-view.

But at the time, I think "Darth" was meant to be a first name and there were no Sith. Just Jedi and the dark side of the force.

Edit: Just realized that Ben also said that Vader was his pupil... That doesn't even fit his point-of-view excuse. lol.

It does. Because he blames himself for Anakin's fall. In his eyes it's his fault that Anakin turned to the Dark Side.

So to retain the blame, he takes the guilt of having trained Vader who then "Killed" Anakin Skywalker.

"A young Jedi named Darth Vader, who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father. Now the Jedi are all but extinct. Vader was seduced by the dark side of the Force."

It's a shame to me at least that Anakin didn't become some semblance of Darth Vader earlier in the prequels his disfigurements due to his recklessnes quickening his turn to the Dark Side. It would also have been fun in a Beauty and the Beast way for Padme to fall in love with our scarred hero. I would have quite enjoyed a third act with the Jedi on the run, Palpatine taking over the galaxy and a moral victory of Obi defeating Vader/Anakin on Mustafar (which is almost arabic for the chosen one) resulting in the need for his cyborg enhancements.

He got his arm cut off by Count Dooku and got the robotic one because he was reckless and didn't attack him together with Obi-Wan.

Plus he has that facial scar in Revenge Of The Sith, which he gained during the Clone Wars. It's not a huge disfigurement, but it's there.
