Don't get me wrong, I love John Williams, I just don't think anything from 4-6 will blow the shutters off your house, would love to be proven wrong.

I think he means a good HD transfer. Lowry will most likely do it and they do a pretty good job. Here is what they have worked on so far:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowry_Digital

List includes the Godfather trilogy, all the James Bonds, Indiana Jones, etc..

That's exactly what I meant since these movies were filmed using 1977 to 1983 technology.

I gotcha. Actually film has higher resolution then 1080 so that is not an issue. Its all the other factors such as who is in charge and what they want it to look like.

What exactly is 1977 to 1983 technology? Isn't that the same technology tyat's produced films for the past 100+ years, and resulted in amazing blu-rays ranging from the 1920s to the 1990s?

It's amazing to me how many people STILL somehow think HD has more resolution than REAL film. Film is being scanned and archived at a whopping 8K. A 1080 film is just that - 1080. Unless, like Lucas's original trilogy, they were sourced at 2K. But still, 2K has nothing on 8K.

I don't think that's the actual issue. I'm more inclined to believe that a lot of people, especially those who aren't into the technical details, are under the assumption that a movie would have to be newer (ie. something from the last few years) to look good in HD. Of course this is not true, however those new to high definition and Blu-ray just may not know any better.

Even old movies would look good if they were given a good treatment from the studio. When you see a movie that you wonder if that is dvd or bluray, it just shows that the studio is lazy.

Some of the 1980 movies just look amazing on bluray and if one thinks they don't look good, just watch the DVD version or one of the old trailers that is included.

Big Trouble in Little China comes to mind, I was blown away when saw the difference between trailers and the actual movie.

Back to Starwars, damn, Oct 2011 is not coming fast enough, although I should not want to rush time since that means we will loose a year and get older by one year

Agreed...

I think many believe that in order to ge the best out of Blu-ray, a HD camera is needed...

Yet if the skeptics who don't know better were to just do some research and watch some of the other movies released in the same time period or earlier, then they would change their mind...

I watched Wizard of Oz on Blu-ray and was blown away by it's detail... did it look the same as Iron Man... no, of course not, but it shouldn't!

Transfers from movies shot in film are more real, more gritty, and show perfectly for their time...

And guess what, Wizard of Oz was shot in 1938/1939...

So, yes, Star Wars can get a great picture upgrade pending Lucas kept his native film in good condition, and puts everything he has into getting the most out of 60's technology with today's technology!!!

Yeah, it's all a matter of how well the source material was stored and if they do a good job getting it scanned in at 4k or 8k master and transfered. Just take a look at Blade Runner. Its pretty old and scored top marks in PQ and AQ..it looks great.

It all depends on the studio and how well it gets transferred to blu-ray. Fox has a pretty good rep for quality releases. WBros i despise with their pi$$ poor effort on not very old films like Harry Potter. The only ones ok in that series are the newest ones as far as transfers go.

Thank you for speaking the truth!

35mm film and even 16mm film can look great if transferred correctly without DNR and such even if the film elements aren't in the best shape. I saw Buster Keaton's The General and the amount of detail in the picture was just amazing, and this was made in the 1920s!

The Star Wars DVDs, especially the original trilogy, are basically reference quality as DVDs go. Therefore, assuming they use the same transfer but downgrade it to 1080p instead of 480p, the Blu-rays should also be reference quality.

Film doesn't need to be scanned in at 4K or even 8K to look good on Blu-ray. Warner is actually the only company (outside of Criterion) that frequently releases classic titles, and consistently in great quality. I can't judge the Harry Potter movies, as I haven't seen them, but by looking at the screenshots they merely look soft to me, which wouldn't be Warner's fault.

I'm gonna very politely disagree that the DVDs are reference quality. Specifically, I think the black levels are fairly bad. I do, however, totally agree that film can be great. I actually saw Star Wars with a 70mm print, and I wish there could be another movie to affect me like that did. Of course I was a kid then.

Oh he's right.

Just go back a few weeks in this thread, as there are a bunch of examples with links to them. The OT DVDs were a sloppy botch job due to a rush to get them out, and also maybe Lucas is trying to get them to look like the PQs in color tone resulting in this mess.

In fact, the new title for IV will be 'Star Wars The Search for the Deepest Black'.

I am really hoping that it is all just because it was rushed and will be fixed, as you also have the very screwed up soundtrack on it to boot.
