Should still look better than the OT on average though. So nothing to worry about.

Agreed The Star Wars Films on blu-ray will look good in 1080p especially Episode 2 ATOC and Episode 3 ROTS and Episode 1 TPM will hopefully have a new digital transfer.

Well, the OT was scanned at 1080p resolution for the restoration process. But if Lucas ever releases them on a higher resolution format he has the opportunity to go back and rescan the originals and get more resolution out of them. The pt he can't because the original prints of episodes 2&3 top out at 1080p so eventually down the the road on a higher resolution format the pt will loose clarity and the ot will gain it. The ot print has 4,000 lines of resolution to draw from and the pt only has 2,000. Those are the facts on the ground. I have an awesome article on the restoration process if your interested in it. The artical states all it's sources too which is good and its very informative.

Doesn't really matter. Since beyond 1080p the human eye can't really tell any signifigant difference.

It all depends on the viewing distance and screen size. There most certainly is a point where the human eye will see more detail. If you projected a 1080p image on a 200" screen and then showed a 4K image you would definitely see the difference. Besides, 4K and 8K scans have often shown to have captured inherent detail even if they are being resized down for 1080p viewing.

Your missing the point. When you upscale something you lose clarity which the human I can see. And on a proper screen the human eye can see a dfference that is the point of Imax and shooting in that format. It allows for more detail to become apparent to the viewer. Its not just bigger. It offers more clarity. When you upscale a 1080p image one a 2,000 resolution screen you will see the difference just like when you upscale a 480p image on a 1080p screen you can see the difference between the true 1080p source and the 480p source. No matter what the resolution when you upscale you lose clarity because the image only has so much detail. Another examaple is taking a 800×600 image and making it fot a 1024×876 screen. The image only has so much detail to give anything more is just stretching the pixels.

Yeah, I've never read his book. I find some of his articles interesting tho. I check his sources before I use any of his articles tho, because some fans like to pass their oppinions off as fact but he's so far been on the up and up. Especially regarding technical stuff such as this.

It's a great article but in the section about the 2004 OT DVD's and the errors to them we have talked about it on here a lot and hopefully knock on wood those errors will be fixed for the blu-ray release.

Yeah, Lucas has the opportunity to dominate the bluray market this year. He better do it right, though. He gets enough hate, and by simply fixing some problems he could win the hearts of the fans.

Yes indeed all of the bashing of GL gets tired after awhile especially from the OT fans that want the want the un-altered OT on blu-ray. The SE's of the OT are GL's perfered versions of the OT he can release them anyway he wants to. But to make all of the fans happy even fans of the the un-altered OT both cuts of the OT should be put out on the blu-ray box set. Again I like the Special Editions and I think it is important to preserved those original cut of the OT. Star Wars was ground braking the way it was original release in 1977 and it should be preserved along with their 2 sequels ESB and ROTJ in their original form.

Exactly.

We can argue forever about the creative decisions, the artistic integrity, etc. - but the "jump the gun" in wanting to be first in line to film digitally was easily the stupidest decision the man has ever made. There is no question. It's ironic in light of his constant tinkering, because filming at 1080p freezes the film in early 2000's technology...forever.

That is a very cold irony indeed.

So as long as I am watching it on a 1080p TV should it look fantastic? Can it look as good as Baraka which was transfered at 8K?

At 1080p yes it will look fantastic, but the pt will never have a snowballs chance in hell at looking as good as an 8k film if we ever move to a higher resolution format. Except for TPM which was filmed on 4k 35mm. It would require a new transfer tho because it was transferred at 2k. But for now on bluray you are gonna see star wars at its best.

I would think that by the time we go to 2k, 4k, or 8kTVs, blu-ray will be replaced with a holographic crystal or something! So, I'm good for now.

The Star Wars Films will look good on blu-ray come this September. And I'm sure LFL has taken their time to get the transfers of the Special Editions of the OT right this time around and knock on wood all those errors from the 2004 dvd transfers of the OT will be fixed and correct (Sorry if I said that before) also the prequel films will look good on blu-ray I'm not worried about that.
