Oh my yes.

At least 99.9% of SW fans HATE Attack of the Clones with a fiery passion. Those of us in the 0.1% are few and very, very, very far between.

It's not an article so it probably won't apply, but in one of the documentaries (and no I don't remember which one of the dozens out there) on the laserdiscs, Lucas talked about how they went out of their way to dirty the sets up so that everything looked "lived in" and used. This is certainly the case with the interiors of the Falcon in ANH. He also discusses "oppressed societies" and wanted that to be part of the visual reasons for things not looking pristine (and in the Alien commentary, Ridley Scott credits Lucas for his own interior set designs. He says he was impressed with the thought that went into making the Star Wars sets look "lived in" and wanted to give the Alien sets the same feel).

Then, in the documentary that came with the Phantom Menace VHS set, Lucas does talk about how the plan was to make everything look beautiful and clean because it before the Empire.

Again I know this isn't the "proof" you're looking for and I'm not trying to change your mind, but I can certainly say for myself that Beast isn't making this stuff up.

And the reality is that CGI isn't limited to making things look shiny and new. CGI can easily make things looked banged up and scruffy.

Good enough for me. I guess I could buy it more easily if it wasn't just a 20-year gap between beautiful-and-shiny and dull-and-dark. But if that was the guy's plan from the beginning, who am I to question it. Thanks for the info, dot. People could learn from you.

Haha. BUT, and I should have mentioned this originally, I also remember reading or watching somewhere Lucas saying (back in 1999) that his plan for the prequels was to start off Episode I with the most amount of visual effects to support this idea of a pre-oppressed society. And that each subsequent movie would have less and less effects shots as the galaxy became more and more oppressed (or chaotic). He said Episode III would have the least effects of the prequels so that the look would be similar to Episode IV. Apparently, he changed his mind along the way.

That there was some pride and artistry in things were made during the Prequel Era. And then after the rise of the Empire, everything was cold and mass produced. Much the same happened in the real world after the world wars, where more and more the artistry was abandoned for the ease of mass production. Just look at things such as classic cars and art deco coffee pots compared to what you can get today.
That didn't occur to me, so thanks for pointing that out. However, I still think he went overboard with the CGI, and personally wished he'd toned some of it down so the universes didn't seem completely unrelated. It just reads like he went to town on his new toy (CGI) instead of thinking of the prequels and original as a whole. As a result, I don't feel like I'm watching Star Wars at all during the prequels.

Agreed on ESB, but I think I have to go with TPM in the PT. Yeah it has bad acting, but I'll bet you cant name a SW movie that doesn't. Also, it just feels more real to me than AOTC or ROTS. The CGI is used to enhance the move not create it. Not to mention an incredible lightsaber battle!!! I just find TPM to be one I can watch over and over like the OT. I do still love AOTC and ROTS. I guess I am one of those rare SW fans that actually really enjoys the Star Wars Saga. However ESB, in my opinion, is the best film in the whole saga.

I don't want to get philosophical. But how can you remember not doing something? What were you doing when you weren't watching or reading them?

I've always thought the beat-up nature of the originals were down to their location, which was pretty far out from the Core. The Death Star and Star Destroyers were pristine. The Millennium Falcon had been places. It's like been in a Mercedez in Stuttgart then driving around one in Africa, "it's not the years, honey, it's the mileage."

The Republic is more 2001: A Space Odyessy than Blade Runner.

I just wish for once he would just come out and say that he changed his mind. He should stop denying things that he has said in the past (especially those things that are well documented).

Instead he does things that are a complete 180 from what he said that he's planning on doing, but then acts like he was planning it this was the plan all along.

We get enough lies from real politicians... we don't need them from fake filmmakng politicians.

(Qui Gon has a funeral, so does Vader, Maul/Palpatine both plummet to the deaths, The Gungans/Ewoks fight the more technologically advanced enemy, and there are two battles in space that result in a big 'splosion). Hell, they could be the same movie...lol
That's why Phantom Menace is still my favourite SW prequel. It's a CG-infused mash-up of Star Wars and Jedi which hits a TON of familiar beats whilst telling its own story.

And it's Phantom Menace which I'm looking forward to the most on Blu-ray. The DVD is kinda shitty, always has been, and the prospect of seeing it all spruced up (with the digital Yoda redo) makes my midichlorians stand on end.

While I can't say that I love AOTC the most, I definitely love it as much as all the other fabulous Episodes, aside from ROTJ, which is my least favorite.

They all have a unique feel to them, and I love the romance, the mystery, and the lurking danger of Anankin's downfall looming over it so much!
Also, the planets in AOTC are some of my all time favorites:
Kamino, Geonosis are simply amazing, let along Naboo!!!
And Padme on Tatooine in that turquoise dress is beyond gorgeous!!
We see Yoda fight for the first time. I still vividly remember seeing that scene in the theater with an audience, and they went nuts, and European audiences rarely get this enthusiastic, so it was truly special.
If I honestly had to choose a single film, I'd actually pick this one, because it has everything I love in it, and ROTS is just so sad and tragic, but regardless, I don't want to pick: They are SW, a 6 part story!

You have to remember where they were.
In the OT they are hiding. Luke is a farmer on Tatooine.
Han is a smuggler.
The Rebels are rebels.

In the PT you follow noble Jedi, in the capitol of the Republic, Coruscant.
You follow the queen, senators.

Naturally it had to look accordingly.

It all makes sense if you think about it a minute or two.

The DVD is indeed unwatchable, and I don't want to start anywhere else, so I am waiting for the BDs.

I too, greatly look forward to experience TPM the best way ever.
It's been over 10 years since we got a decent presentation of it.
Naboo is of such unspeakable beauty, as is the underwater city, and Coruscant. Oh, it's going to be glorious!!!

Me too the TPM DVD was a bad transfer to say the least and hopefully the color timing problems with the 2004 OT DVD are corrected as well. I do have one question for you blu-yoda have you seen the star wars clone wars cartoon series on cartoon network or on blu-ray? It's a great series and each episode gets better and better.

Do you mean the hand-drawn animation or "The Clone Wars" computer animated series, that has Season 1+2 out on BD already.
I take it you mean the latter, right?
No, I haven't watched a single "Clone Wars" episode.
I want to check them out though, but I am not brave enough to purchase a whole season without ever having seen anything of it.
I am not entirely sure whether it's my cup of tea or not.
I have a friend who is a SW geek as well, and I think he has "The Clone Wars", so I'll try to catch an episode over at his place.
Another reason why I am reluctant to buy them on BD is the lossy audio.
I think it's unacceptable.

Of course, we all want the 2004 OT corrected, and I am quite certain that it's been done already, since we all know that the 2004 release was rushed.

Now is the time for SW to shine brightly! This is his golden opportunity to set things right, once and for all!

I like both The Clone Wars" computer animated series and hand hand-drawn animation series. They are well written sure their are episodes that sometimes are so so but they are all enjoyable. I have season 1 and 2 of clone wars and yes the audio is standard dolby digital and hopefully season 3 will be in DTS HD Master audio when it comes out this fall. And I agree with you when it comes to the star wars saga on blu-ray Now is the time for SW to shine brightly! This is his golden opportunity to set things right, once and for all indeed. Star Wars is forever and there is no question that the blu-ray release of all 6 films will be the best quality the films have ever looked.

One of the best explanations for the differences between the two trilogies that I have read. Well done, Bluyoda.
