PeterTHX obviously already knows the backstory but here it is for anyone else. One man did the initial CG work in terms of creating the Viper, but the man he sent it to wasn't very impressed and he goes on to detail what steps he took to turn it into what we see above.

Thanks for the site. It was cool. I picked out the bottom one as the CG one, just by infinitesimal details, mostly a guess. It was awesome though and the guys did great. Definitely looked very much like the original pic. On a separate topic, I did not know that ship was from BSG. Please don't take my sci-fi geek credentials.

Yes, and not all of them are models. Some of the volcano shots on Mustafar was filmed by Ron Fricke (Baraka) on location when Mount Etna erupted in Italy.

Also Steven Spielberg was a guest director on Revenge of the Sith.

I hate the "space saving" packaging that requires one disk to be removed to view another. Or the discs that are so hard to remove that you have to bend them to take them out of the package. These factors or anything that can lead to scratching of the disk is far more important to me than any box art. I really hope we get a collection where the disks can be easily removed and put back like a standard blu ray, without anything that's going to lead to scratching or damage.

I would think that the actual story is the thing of paramount importance to the enjoyment of a film. Complaining about it being "outdated" (as technology does move on, funnily enough) isn't going to help.

I hope this won't be the case, as, although beautiful to look at, I find it very unpractical, especially getting the discs in and out, and the glossy surface.

Regarding the Steven Spielberg bit, I think George just said that as a joke, to be able to be harder on them (the VFX guys), without taking the responsibility for it.

Yes but, ironically, in the Star Wars universe technology actually declines in the 20 years between ROTS and ANH.

Outdated or not, the movies are still good however no need to be blind about it and say they are not outdated, as if saying so make's the movies bad.

This has happened throughout human history. What about the fall of all the great cultures (Mayan, Roman, Greek, Egyptian....)?

Also, in the PT we follow a queen, noble Jedi and the like, whereas in the OT we follow a couple of droids, a bunch of rebels, a farm boy, a smuggler and so on. Makes sense to me that Han's ship wouldn't be made out of chrome.

exactly. casablanca is an old movie but still a great movie. the story and how it is presented are what matters. nothing dates a movie worse than someone trying to predict the curve and then totally missing it. how many sci-fi movies gave us looks and items that were supposed to be futuristic but totally missed the mark? those movies look horrible out of date yet you can enjoy them(well some anyways). i can still watch dirty harry and it doesn't bother me that he doesn't carry a cell phone or that they don't have computers to use. all movies are outdated eventually but for a good movie, it doesn't matter. there is a reason why they don't colorize classic movies to give them mass appeal - you don't need to.

Good points - its the story and performances that really set the best films apart and they *should* be timeless just for those reasons.

However, lets be realistic here: Horrible effects, lousy acting, etc, etc CAN rear their ugly head and take you "out" of a film or hinder its enjoyment to some extent. I mean, some older Sci-Fi really looks dodgy - like you can see the strings attached to the ships or you can see the zipper on the cheesey alien suit. That kind of stuff kills it, IMO. Hairstyles, no cell phones, etc, etc dont bother me at all either. It might bother other people though and they'll just ahve to deal with it or not watch it.

Movies are a product of their time and improvements will always come along. I have no problem with a little cheese here and there. The film cant be loaded with it though.

Look at Blade Runner and 2001 - Both still hold up like 99% perfectly due to their great production values and caring directors.

Still debating. Preferably I'd buy the complete saga, but I just have this sinking feeling that this isn't the "complete" package we've been waiting for. Deleted scenes are nice, but do we need a feature on the 501st? Especially considering they could've imported over "Empire of Dreams" or any of the great features from the PT DVDs?

Sorry, I don't really remember. And I got rid of my prequel DVDs a few years ago, so I can't check.
