you know, Lucas can't keep screwing us over. They say they've already learned their lesson from the failed 2006 individual release. People will quickly grow tired of Star Wars if they keeping releasing crapy releases. Star Wars has already been out of the limelight a bit, so that can't help.

Why? People have lived without it this long. If I were a fan of the PT or the SE's there is no way I would plop down 80 bucks for a set that looks just somewhat better than the DVD's. There is no excuse, not one that Lucas can give for not remastering all these films.

The box seems like the Superman Box, sort of what was there before with better transfers but not too difficult to get out there and sell. Get some money to see what interest there would be in another box further down the line.

This will not be the final physical release of Star Wars!
Are you delusional? There's very little that could be done to the Superman boxed set to make it any better.

What are the "2004 releases"? I bought my OT DVD set when it was originally released, but I have no idea when that was. Was that 2004? Have there been subsequent releases?

I don't see anything wrong with them, so I imagine I'll be content if the ones I have are used for the BDs (as long as there is an upgrade in sound and video). Then again, I'm a guy that found nothing wrong with the Gladiator BD and LOTR BDs. Perhaps my eyes suck, my system sucks, or both.

That's the thing though, "pretend" is the key word because they ARE gonna buy it, they're just gonna maintain the illusion that they aren't.
Well, posts were mature in here for a minute.

Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see any indication that these won't be remastered. I think we're all jumping the gun here.

Does that surprise you? the pessimists run rampant here, I am cautiously optimistic, but I will refrain from commenting until something concrete appears, which will more than likely be when we have the Set in our own hands to review.

2004 was when the OT first came out on DVD, and had additional changes on top of what was already done in 1997. And with the exception of the non-anamorphic theatrical version bonus discs that were released later, these are the ONLY versions officially available on DVD. All of the subsquent DVD releases (the 2005 box set with no bonus disc, the 2006 individual releases, the later digi-pack trilogy set) were just these exact same discs repackaged in some way or another.

This link has a lot of detail about the problems with the mastering that was done for that release:

Why?
Lucasfilm have a raw master, and it's simple correct this problem and recover the details.

The point, if I understand it correctly, is that it would be a lot of work to go back to the original master and then have to redo all of the new, added special effects, etc. So, yes, it is theoretically possible for them to do this, but it would be very time consuming and a lot of work.

However, the point is that they can't simply take the existing 2004 for master and just 'adjust the color timing' and undo all of the problems that they caused with the color timing that was done back then.

Default Star Wars all encompassing...

why stop at the movies? Add all add the 80's cartoons and 2 Ewok films remastered! I would also love to see George take us on a personal tour of the ranch with a tour of the archives as well!

You are joking, right?

You're not seriously suggesting that it's somehow petulant or unreasonable to hope that some of the most iconic films in history get properly mastered for their release on this format?

But the master that Lucasfilm used is raw! The color correction and CGI was created in a raw master. And the advantage of work with a raw master is that you can change the video parameters without create artifact.
From this master they create the HDTV master and the blu ray master.
So at any time is possible to change a video features.
