For people who just want Star Wars on blu-ray, hey, go for it. Hope you sincerely enjoy it.

For people who want Star Wars as it is truly meant to be seen, sans darkened images, redone visual effects, and other modifications, don't get your hopes up and if the 2004 transfers are confirmed avoid this release and speak with your wallet.
Well - didn't I say exactly that? I'm just waiting for the actual discs to start falling into the hands of people like Adyman - if this set uses the 2004 transfers, then Fox and Lucasfilm can forget about it. How in the world that company isn't embarassed by flopped surround tracks and the rest is absolutely beyond me. But I'm holding out hope.

Hope but consider the facts.

a) Official blu-ray sneak peek @ Comic Con shows same glitch from 2004 transfer, not present on pre-2004 versions of SW.

b) Pink lightsaber on official website.

c) OT screenshots on official website closely match those of 2004 release with gamma increased.

Come on, now, do you really believe there's a strong chance that these are new transfers?

I'd say be cautiously optimistic but expect the same problems from 2004 to exist.

Even if they are using the 2004 transfer as a starting point, isn't it possible that they could fix/change certain things, and maybe not others?
I've never made a film, and then tweaked it over and over, so I don't know how all of this really works.

Their have been a lot of fans saying the blu-ray box set will be the definitive editions / final edtions of the films. I'm not sure if that is true we you've got the 3-D release coming out starting next year with episode 1 and then the films being released on 3-D blu-ray after that.

I do remember reading that the 3D will be taken from the same exact tranfer as this set.

Yeah they could. It just would be too bad that Star Wars keeps getting that kind of crass, cut rate plastic surgery-on top of more surgery thing, unlike most big movies. But then again the whole special edition mentality is built on that.

In that case there are changes they are keeping under wraps, or they don't care. Tho that makes it harder to believe nothing will be changed.

it will be the definitive editions of Episodes II and III, since they were filmed in 1080p and cannot possibly look better.

The rest were filmed with film, so the digital effects could theoretically be redone for 4K resolution and look better. How much better I'm not sure... I wonder what the max. resolution would be where no more detail would be revealed, other then making the film grain slightly more defined...

Also, all the 2004 transfers really need are colour enhancement, I've never really noticed any sloppy effects, just sometimes the colours look really off (perhaps some effects could have done better, but their annoyance is negligable compared to that of the colour issues). If they release only the special editions, but include all of the original footage in the form of deleted scenes, it would be perfect

Maybe it would just be cheaper to go back to the untouched original film reels and make entirely new effects off of those.

That's what they say now, but they are doing the conversions film by film and they haven't even begun to convert any OT films to 3D. Also, the OT films being converted to 3D is completely dependent upon the success of the prequel rereleases. With that said, best case scenario, A New Hope will hit theaters in 2015. Right now they "plan" on using the same transfer found in the Blu Rays, but a lot can change in three years. Should the OT make it back to theaters, there is no way they won't fix the lightsabers for the 3D release and indeed, Lucasfilm probably thinks it would be cheaper to do the fixes prior to each theatrical rerelease, on a yearly basis, than it would be to do all the fixes at once for a home video release in a still somewhat niche market.

Maybe a member from Australia can comfirm but I think Fox often puts the number of discs on the cover for multi-disc sets. I still think it's the wrong decision to limit the individual trilogies to 3 discs instead of 4. The full set is hardly cheap and having a bonus disc with the individual sets would make the people who can only afford one set at a time a lot happier.

Yes, this would be even better! Like what they did with Blade Runner.

Scan all of the reels at 4K and then digitally composite the original effects, redo the digital ones at 4K = AWESOME!

Don't forget that none of the individual OT DVD releases have come with bonus features either (besides the Laserdisc theatrical transfers). Only in the boxed sets... This trend seems to be continuing into the blu era

Considering the fact that the 2004 versions of the films (with newly created effects) are 1080p video files and were not created or finished on film I am 99.99999% positive these blurays are not new transfers of film elements. I would love to be wrong.

The 1997 Special Edition exists on film. The majority of the changes between 1997 and 2004 were either colour or audio. There weren't too many digital effects added.

I'm betting they still have the separate digital elements from the 2004 remaster so it wouldn't be too hard to make a new transfer from film, if Lucas were so inclined

It wouldn't be too hard, but I seriously doubt that they did.

You know what would make me buy this set? Include Red Tails as a supplement. If they are never going to release it, just include it here as a curiosity.
